We use data from a large Randomized Control Trial to evaluate the impact of Mobile Pedagogical Tutors on the education outcomes of students in 3rd to 6th grade in a community-based schooling model in rural Mexico, where the regular instructors are low educated non-professionals from the community. The mobile tutors devote their time providing a) pedagogical support to the instructors, b) one to one tutoring to the students lagging behind and c) home visits to parents. The pilot was started in Fall 2014 and we collected survey data two years after the program inception (Spring 2016), to study the program's impact on student assessments, parent reported measure of socio-emotional well-being, as well as data on the mediating factors including student effort, parental involvement and pedagogical practices. We complement survey data with administrative data on transitions from primary to secondary.
There are different units on analysis: 1) Student level data 2) Household level data 3) Teacher level data 4) Mobile tutor level data

Abstract: Introduction: Problem-Based Learning involves the tutor acting as a facilitator, where social and cognitive congruence, as well as knowledge of the content are considered essential factors for the exercise. Objective: To verify tutors’ domains of competency and their correlation to student performance. Method: Cross-sectional study conducted between February 2016 and 2017, with tutors and medical students from the Pernambuco School of Health. Correspondence analysis based on Spearman’s correlation coefficient was used to ascertain the correlation between the tutor domains of competency profile and the overall performance. Results: The study included 34 tutors and 533 students, three domains of competency were identified within the frequencies: cognitive congruence in 88.7%, social congruence in 93.6% and content knowledge in 98.9%. No correlation was found between the domains of competency and performance. Conclusion: This finding is thought to be due to the lack of control of confounding variables.

A substantial body of experimental evidence demonstrates that in-person tutoringprograms can have large impacts on K-12 student achievement. However, suchprograms typically are costly and constrained by a limited local supply of tutors. Inpartnership with CovEducation (CovEd), we conduct a pilot program that has potentialto ease both of these concerns. We conduct an experiment where volunteer tutorsfrom all over the country meet 1-on-1 with middle school students online during theschool day. We find that the program produces consistently positive (0.07σ for mathand 0.04σ for reading) but statistically insignificant effects on student achievement. While these estimates are notably smaller than those found in many higher-dosagein-person tutoring programs, they are from a significantly lower-cost program thatwas delivered within the challenging context of the COVID-19 pandemic. We provideevidence that is consistent with a dosage model of tutoring where additional hoursresult in larger effects. Response Rates: The school has over 900 students. At the time of the experiment, 477 of these chose to attend school in-person. All were eligible for participation in the experiment and were part of the initial randomizations. The randomization first selected 268 of these 477 students to participate in the experiment in wave 1. 134 of these were then randomized into treatment in wave 1. The remaining 209 students were part of wave 2; 88 were randomized into treatment since 88 new tutors became available. Finally, 83 new students later switched to hybrid attendance and were part of wave 3. 42 were randomized into treatment. All students that were attending hybrid (in-person some days, at home others) at the middle school where the experiment was conducted were part of the study. Students who attended at home full time were not eligible. other; Data is de-identified and was provided by the school where the experiment was conducted.
