In June 2025, the unadjusted unemployment rate of women in the United States stood at 4.4 percent. This was an increase from the previous month. What is seasonal adjustment? Seasonal adjustment is a statistical method that attempts to remove seasonal patters from figures to show how employment and unemployment changes from month to month. For example, seasonal adjustment is used to account for the extra people that are hired in retail around Christmas. Seasonal adjustment makes it so that monthly data can be compared more accurately over the long term. When looking at the seasonally adjusted female unemployment rate, for example, one can see that it is more uniform than the unadjusted rate in order to account for the seasonal component. Unemployment in the United States Unemployment in the United States is seen as a critical indicator of how the economy is doing. In 2010, for example, unemployment in the U.S. was at 9.6 percent due to the Great Recession – the highest figure since 1990. Since 2010, unemployment has been steadily falling as the economy has recovered, and even hit its lowest point since 1990 in 2022, at 3.6 percent. Due to the coronavirus pandemic, unemployment in 2021 soared to 8.1 percent.

In 2024, it was estimated that 26.7 percent of women in the U.S. had some type of mental illness in the past year. This statistic shows the percentage of U.S. women who had any mental illness in the past year from 2008 to 2024.

The COVID-19 pandemic has impacts beyond people’s health that affect different aspects of day-to-day life. All people will be impacted in some way and must adapt to the pandemic, however men and women – or different groups of men and women – will not all be affected in the same ways. This is due to women and men play different roles and have different responsibilities in their homes and communities.

Women and girls are disproportionately impacted by crises. Women and girls are likely to: face even higher rates of domestic violence and sexual abuse; are more vulnerable to economic hardship as income generation activities women perform are disrupted; have increased unpaid in the household due to the closure of schools and have reduced access to essential health services. It is important to keep track of how all the different segments of the population are being affected by the COVID-19 pandemic and how mitigation measures are affecting people’s lives. This set of indicators has been developed to assist with that purpose.

COVID-19 response strategies that are gender responsive and socially inclusive to address the needs of women, youth, people with disabilities and other segments of the population who are more vulnerable.

The list of indicators is not mandatory nor exhaustive but, hopefully, helpful for people needing to track COVID-19 responses and impacts. The indicators cover seven areas: 1. Health impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic. 2. Participation of women, youth, and people with disability in decision making. 3. Sexual and reproductive health. 4. Domestic violence. 5. Economic security. 6. Food security. 7. Unpaid care work.

Context

The dataset presents median income data over a decade or more for males and females categorized by Total, Full-Time Year-Round (FT), and Part-Time (PT) employment in United States. It showcases annual income, providing insights into gender-specific income distributions and the disparities between full-time and part-time work. The dataset can be utilized to gain insights into gender-based pay disparity trends and explore the variations in income for male and female individuals.

Key observations: Insights from 2023

Based on our analysis ACS 2019-2023 5-Year Estimates, we present the following observations: - All workers, aged 15 years and older: In United States, the median income for all workers aged 15 years and older, regardless of work hours, was $48,138 for males and $32,546 for females.

These income figures highlight a substantial gender-based income gap in United States. Women, regardless of work hours, earn 68 cents for each dollar earned by men. This significant gender pay gap, approximately 32%, underscores concerning gender-based income inequality in the country of United States.

- Full-time workers, aged 15 years and older: In United States, among full-time, year-round workers aged 15 years and older, males earned a median income of $67,966, while females earned $54,999, leading to a 19% gender pay gap among full-time workers. This illustrates that women earn 81 cents for each dollar earned by men in full-time roles. This analysis indicates a widening gender pay gap, showing a substantial income disparity where women, despite working full-time, face a more significant wage discrepancy compared to men in the same roles.

Surprisingly, the gender pay gap percentage was higher across all roles, including non-full-time employment, for women compared to men. This suggests that full-time employment offers a more equitable income scenario for women compared to other employment patterns in United States.
