    Description

The University of Nevada Agricultural Experiment Station’s Gund Ranch near Austin, Nevada is approximately 100,000 acres with grazing by 325 cow-calf pairs. Cows are mostly Angus (80%) and Hereford (20%). Bulls are Angus X Hereford. Calves are mostly Angus with some black baldies. Cattle graze a Bureau of Land Management (BLM) grazing permit from April through July. Calving starts about mid-April. Branding is planned for 90-100 days after birth with bull calves castrated as this time. Privately-owned meadows are grazed July-September with weaning starting on September 15. Cows are grazed on BLM low elevation shrublands and weaned calves are kept in meadows with supplemental hay feeding on the Gund Ranch from October 1st through January 1st. The calves not kept for replacements are gathered and weighed for a total herd weight and shipped approximately the 1st of November. The larger end of the steers and heifers typically range from 475-490 pounds. Around 100 head are loaded onto a semi to achieve a full truckload of 48,000-50,0000 pounds. The smaller end of the steers and heifers are shipped on a second semi load. Weights are decreased with a 2% shrink calculation. In Nevada, there are only two sale barns, so many ranches receive more money by selling semi loads shipped to grazinglands of buyers’ choice. Calves are primarily sold on the internet go through Roundup Cattle Company. In years with drought conditions, calves may not reach the 48,000-50,000 weight limit for a second truck. Thus, the smaller calves can be marketed through a local sale barn at a one of their special calf sales. Supported/funded by the University of Nevada, Reno, the Nevada Agricultural Experiment Station, and USDA. Description

The effects of stocking rate on livestock performance and profitability were monitored on 12 pastures at the Central Grasslands Research Extension Center (CGREC) near Streeter, ND from 1989 through 2015. These data were produced from an investigation of how the impacts of grazing intensity on native range, in addition to an economic component, was included to determine grazing intensity effect on animal production. Cattle were raised at the CGREC or purchased at auction. Livestock cattle breeds are unknown, but can be described as either yearling open heifer, bred heifers or all steers. 1994 was the only year when the herds were mixed sexes. A table of stocking history is available with this data package as a supplemental dataset called: StockingHistory1989-2015.csv. Information on pasture acreage and the proportion of acres in various ecological range sites, as well as stocking rates, are included as supplemental datasets and are called, respectively: Pasture_and_RangeSites.csv and Revised_AUM_Cals.csv This data package supports papers reporting the response of livestock performance as ADG (average daily weight gain) and production as weight gain per unit land area to cattle grazing on northern mixed-grass prairie in south-central North Dakota that was subsequently invaded by Kentucky bluegrass (Poa pratensis L.) in 1995. Grazing traditionally occurred mid-May until mid-October in 12 pastures, each approximately 30 acres. The goal of managing grazing intensity was to leave a certain percentage of forage produced in that year OR relative to an average year on the pasture. This was achieved by adjusting stocking rate (i.e. number of individuals per area) within each pasture. When necessary as in 2015, animals were supplemented with dried distiller’s grain at .3% of body weight each day. An animal unit month was used to determine stocking rates and is defined as the forage required to sustain a 1,000 lb cow and her calf for one month. This assumes they require 26 lbs/day of forage on a dry matter basis. This forage amount was based on metabolic weight of animals in this study, including a 1200lb cow as 1.147 AUMs and a 700 lb steer or open heifer as.765 AUM. Five grazing intensities included: no grazing, light grazing (1.3 animal unit months [AUM] · ha-1 with 65% of forage left in the fall), moderate grazing (2.7 AUM · ha-1 with 50% of forage left in the fall), heavy grazing (4.4 AUM · ha-1 with 35% of forage left in fall), and extreme grazing (6.9 AUM · ha-1 with 20% of forage left in the fall). Description

The objectives of this study were to determine the response curve of increasing supplementation rate with extruded distillers’ grains (DDG) cubes for animal performance and supplemental efficiency by steers grazing midgrass prairie in western Oklahoma. A 2-year trial was conducted at the Oklahoma Agricultural Experiment Station, Marvin Klemme Range Research Station (Klemme), Bessie, Oklahoma and the USDA-ARS, Southern Plains Experimental Range (SPER), Ft. Supply, Oklahoma, both in western Oklahoma during the summers of 2021 and 2022. At Klemme, steers (n = 133 Yr 1, BW = 247 ± 24.5 kg; Yr 2, n = 134, BW = 264 ± 29.1 kg) were allocated to 6 pastures in Yr 1 and 7 pastures in Yr 2 which were assigned to three daily supplementation rates of DDG cubes: 1) Negative Control (NC)- no supplementation; 2) Low Supplement (LS) - 0.91 kg/steer and 3) Medium Supplementation (MS) – 1.82 kg/steer. At Klemme, steers were stocked at 2.0 ha/steer in yr 1 and 2.8 ha/steer in yr 2. At SPER steers (n=119 each year; Yr 1, BW = 295 ± 28.8 kg; Yr 2, BW = 294 ± 25.7 kg) were allocated to 12 pastures stocked at 2.0 ha/steer with pastures assigned to: 1) NC; 2) LS; 3) MS and 4) High Supplement – daily supplementation rate of 2.72 kg/steer.
