    The National Hydrography Dataset (NHD) is a feature-based database that interconnects and uniquely identifies the stream segments or reaches that make up the nation's surface water drainage system. NHD data was originally developed at 1:100,000-scale and exists at that scale for the whole country. This high-resolution NHD, generally developed at 1:24,000/1:12,000 scale, adds detail to the original 1:100,000-scale NHD. (Data for Alaska, Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands was developed at high-resolution, not 1:100,000 scale.) Local resolution NHD is being developed where partners and data exist. The NHD contains reach codes for networked features, flow direction, names, and centerline representations for areal water bodies. Reaches are also defined on waterbodies and the approximate shorelines of the Great Lakes, the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans and the Gulf of Mexico. The NHD also incorporates the National Spatial Data Infrastructure framework criteria established by the Federal Geographic Data Committee.

    This layer was created by the Research & Analytics Division of the Atlanta Regional Commission to represent the rivers and streams in the state of Georgia. It contains linear hydrographic features, including rivers, streams, and artificial flow paths through water bodies. Data were captured from USGS 7.5 minute mylar separates containing the "blue-layer" from the U.S. Geological Survey's 1:24000-scale quadrangle maps.     To provide an alternative to the native NHD measuring system of percentage of distance along reach length with one that enhances the ability to examine distance relationships along entire stream courses.


    National Hydrography Dataset (NHD) high resolution NHDFlowline features for California were originally dissolved on common GNIS_ID or StreamLevel* attributes and routed from mouth to headwater in meters. The results are measured polyline features representing entire streams. Routes on these streams are measured upstream, i.e., the measure at the mouth of a stream is zero and at the upstream end the measure matches the total length of the stream feature. Using GIS tools, a user of this dataset can retrieve the distance in meters upstream from the mouth at any point along a stream feature.** CA_Streams_v3 Update Notes: This version includes over 200 stream modifications and additions resulting from requests for updating from CDFW staff and others***. New locator fields from the USGS Watershed Boundary Dataset (WBD) have been added for v3 to enhance user's ability to search for or extract subsets of California Streams by hydrologic area. *See the Source Citation section of this metadata for further information on NHD, WBD, NHDFlowline, GNIS_ID and StreamLevel. See the Data Quality section of this metadata for further explanation of stream feature development.

    *Some current NHD data has not yet been included in CA_Streams. The effort to synchronize CA_Streams with NHD is ongoing.

The digital segmented network based on watershed boundaries - ERF1-2 - includes enhancements to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's River Reach File 1 (RF1) (USEPA - 1996; DeWald and others - 1985) to support national and regional-scale surface water-quality modeling. Alexander and others (1999) developed ERF1 - which assessed the hydrologic integrity of the digital reach traces and calculated the mean water time-of-travel in river reaches and reservoirs. ERF1-2 serves as the foundation for SPARROW (Spatially Referenced Regressions (of nutrient transport) On Watershed) modeling. Within the context of a Geographic Information System - SPARROW estimates the proportion of watersheds in the conterminous U.S. with outflow concentrations of several nutrients - including total nitrogen and total phosphorus - (Smith - R.A. - Schwarz - G.E. - and Alexander - R.B. - 1997). This version of the network expands on ERF1 (version 1.2; Alexander et al. 1999) - and includes the incremental and total drainage area derived from 1-kilometer (km) elevation data for North America. Previous estimates of the water time-of-travel were recomputed for reaches with water- quality monitoring sites that included two reaches. The mean flow and velocity estimates for these split reaches are based on previous estimation methods (Alexander et al. - 1999) and are unchanged in ERF1-2. Drainage area calculations provide data used to estimate the contribution of a given nutrient to the outflow. Data estimates depend on the accuracy of node connectivity. Reaches split at water- quality or pesticide-monitoring sites indicate the source point for estimating the contribution and transport of nutrients and their loads throughout the watersheds. The ERF1-2 coverage extends the earlier ERF1 coverage by providing digital-elevation-model (DEM-based estimates of reach drainage area founded on the 1-kilometer data for North America (Verdin - 1996; Verdin and Jenson - 1996). A 1-kilometer raster grid of ERF1-2 projected to Lambert Azimuthal Equal Area - NAD 27 Datum (Snyder - 1987) - was merged with the HYDRO1K flow direction data set (Verdin and Jenson - 1996) to generate a DEM-based watershed grid - ERF1_2WS. The watershed boundaries are maintained in a raster (grid cell) format as well as a vector (polygon) format for subsequent model analysis. Both the coverage - ERF1-2 - and the grid - ERF1-2WS are available at: http://water.usgs.gov/lookup/gisgetlist. The version of RF1 used to compile ERF1-2 was an early edition of a USGS RF1 translation and was updated by USEPA (USEPA - 1996). Water Course is a spatial representation of hydrography features (Stream/River, Lake/Pond, Canal/Ditch, Swamp/Marsh, Open Drains, Closed Drains, Non Gravity Drains and Siphons). The linear natural waterway features were stereo compiled at a scale of 1:1200 using Oakland County's 2000 orthophotography as a reference. Drain feature locations were derived from conversion efforts from paper and digital construction plans.Key attributes include the Asset Maintainer, ReachCode and the GNISID as defined in the the National Hydrography Dataset (NHD). Note: NextDownID fields that equal -1 means there is no feature downstream.

    The U.S. Geological Survey South Atlantic Water Science Center, in cooperation with the South Carolina Department of Transportation, implemented a South Carolina StreamStats application in 2018. This shapefile dataset contains vector lines representing streams, rivers, and ditches that were used in preparing the underlying data for the South Carolina StreamStats application. Data were compiled from multiple sources, but principally represent lidar-derived linework from the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources and the South Carolina Lidar Consortium.The South Carolina hydrography lines were created from elevation rasters that ranged from 4 to 10 ft resolution, to produce a product of approximately 1:6,000-scale. Nature. https://doi.org/10.1038/s41586-021-03565-5In this study, we developed a statistical Random Forest model to produce the first reach-scale estimate of the global distribution of non-perennial rivers and streams. For this purpose, we linked quality-checked observed streamflow data from 5,615 gauging stations (on 4,428 perennial and 1,187 non-perennial reaches) with 113 candidate environmental predictors available globally. Predictors included variables describing climate, physiography, land cover, soil, geology, and groundwater as well as estimates of long-term naturalised (i.e., without anthropogenic water use in the form of abstractions or impoundments) mean monthly and mean annual flow (MAF), derived from a global hydrological model (WaterGAP 2.2; Müller Schmied et al. 2014). Following model training and validation, we predicted the probability of flow intermittence for all river reaches in the RiverATLAS database (Linke et al. 2019), a digital representation of the global river network at high spatial resolution.The data repository includes two datasets resulting from this study:1. a geometric network of the global river system where each river segment is associated with:i. 113 hydro-environmental predictors used in model development and predictions, andii. the probability and class of flow intermittence predicted by the model.2. point locations of the 5,516 gauging stations used in model training/testing, where each station is associated with a line segment representing a reach in the river network, and a set of metadata.These datasets have been generated with source code located at messamat.github.io/globalirmap/.Note that, although several attributes initially included in RiverATLAS version 1.0 have been updated for this study, the dataset provided here is not an established new version of RiverATLAS. 2. Data format and projectionThe geometric network (lines) and gauging stations (points) datasets are distributed both in ESRI® file geodatabase and shapefile formats. The file geodatabase contains all data and is the prime, recommended format. Shapefiles are provided as a copy for users that cannot read the geodatabase. Each shapefile consists of five main files (.dbf, .sbn, .sbx, .shp, .shx), and projection information is provided in an ASCII text file (.prj). The attribute table can be accessed as a stand-alone file in dBASE format (.dbf) which is included in the Shapefile format. These datasets are available electronically in compressed zip file format. To use the data files, the zip files must first be decompressed.All data layers are provided in geographic (latitude/longitude) projection, referenced to datum WGS84. In ESRI® software this projection is defined by the geographic coordinate system GCS_WGS_1984 and datum D_WGS_1984 (EPSG: 4326).4. Recent versions of NHD High Res may be more detailed than this dataset for some areas, while this dataset may still be more detailed than NHD High Res in other areas. This dataset is considered authoritative as used by CDFW for particular tracking purposes but may not be current or comprehensive for all streams in the state.

    National Hydrography Dataset (NHD) high resolution NHDFlowline features for California were originally dissolved on common GNIS_ID or StreamLevel* attributes and routed from mouth to headwater in meters. The results are measured polyline features representing entire streams. Routes on these streams are measured upstream, i.e., the measure at the mouth of a stream is zero and at the upstream end the measure matches the total length of the stream feature. Using GIS tools, a user of this dataset can retrieve the distance in meters upstream from the mouth at any point along a stream feature.** CA_Streams_v3 Update Notes: This version includes over 200 stream modifications and additions resulting from requests for updating from CDFW staff and others***. New locator fields from the USGS Watershed Boundary Dataset (WBD) have been added for v3 to enhance user's ability to search for or extract subsets of California Streams by hydrologic area. *See the Source Citation section of this metadata for further information on NHD, WBD, NHDFlowline, GNIS_ID and StreamLevel. **See the Data Quality section of this metadata for further explanation of stream feature development. ***Some current NHD data has not yet been included in CA_Streams.
