    The objective of this survey is to gather information on tuition fees, living accommodation costs at residences/housing and additional compulsory fees paid by full-time university students at Canadian universities. Data are collected annually by questionnaire through the Registrar or the Business Office of universities. Survey results are available at the end of August. Data for undergraduate programs are available by institution, by province, by program and by type of students (Canadian or F oreign). Data for graduate programs are available by institution, by province and by type of students (Canadian or Foreign). Additional compulsory fees are available by institution, by province and by type (athletics, health services, student association, and other). Living accommodation costs at residence/housing are available by institution, by type of students (single or married) and by type of costs (room, meal plan,or both).

    Description

    In 2021, the Dutch government granted nearly 2.7 billion euros worth of loans to students. Up until 2015-2016, the government subsidized participation in education and training by providing allowances for school costs and student grants and loans. These served to partly compensate students or their parents for their expenditure on tuition fees, books and materials, public transport and the cost of living. The supplementary grant and the student travel card were conditional loans. A conditional loan will be converted to a gift on completion of the student’s studies within a given period. If a student did not complete his/her studies within this period it will remain a loan and will have to be repaid. This system (referred to as basisbeurs in the Netherlands) was abolished in 2015-2016 and replaced with with a system of regular, non-conditional loans.

    Over the five years through 2024-25, revenue has grown at a compound annual rate of 4.4%. Growth has been largely driven by record student enrolment numbers, both from international students and applications from 18-year-olds living in the UK. It is the large increase in international enrolment numbers that is driving growth and demand for quality student accommodation. The growing middle classes in emerging nations such as China, as well as demand for studies outstripping supply in these home countries, is behind Chinese students, accounting for 5.3% of university enrolments in HESA's most recent 2021-22 figures. Revenue plummeted in 2020-21 by 18.7% because of the COVID-19 outbreak. Following the outbreak in March 2020, numerous students moved and opted to stay at home as classes were taught online. Major accommodation providers refunded students and made booking terms and cancellation policies more flexible, curtailing revenue and profit. Brexit continues to weigh on demand as EU applications have tumbled since students are no longer entitled to home-fee status. There were 22,400 applications from the EU in 2023, which pales in comparison to 51,310 in 2019, according to UCAS. Demand to study at UK universities has remained very high throughout the three years through 2024-25 from domestic and non-EU students, and the complete return to campuses has boosted revenue. With demand for student housing outstripping the supply, occupancy levels are strong, and rent is high, growing by 7.6% in 2024. Revenue is growing by 5% in 2024-25, reaching £6.6 billion. Over the five years through 2029-30, revenue is expected to grow at a compound annual rate of 4.4%, reaching £8.3 billion. Purpose-built student accommodation will face intense competition from students who rent private accommodation or live at home. The ongoing cost of living crisis will leave more students unable to afford student accommodation as rent prices continue to soar. Demand for and supply of student accommodation will continue to rise, spurred by increasing enrolment numbers and the persistent undersupply and shortage of purpose-built student accommodation.

    The drastic need for apartments has led to an expansion for apartment and condominium construction contractors over the past five years. Still, changing interest rates have led to years of expansion and contractions for contractors. Overall, revenue has been increasing at a CAGR of 3.8% to total an estimated $91.8 billion through the end of 2025, including an estimated 2.2% increase in 2025. Low interest rates amid the pandemic led residential investment to swell, which included apartment complexes. As inflationary concerns and interest rate hikes lingered, many contractors delayed construction, leading to a contraction in 2023 as housing starts sank. Profit has risen slightly as materials price inflation has cooled and contractors have been able to adjust their rates, passing along higher prices to customers. This has also been a driver of revenue growth. Multifamily complexes are still very much needed as young professionals and immigrants move to major cities, leading to growth in 2025. Home prices are set to see slower growth in the coming years than in the previous five, causing a shift in the housing market back to homeownership. Also, continued rate cuts will incentivize home construction. Mortgage rates have remained stubbornly high in the face of cuts to the federal funds rate, however. Elevated mortgage rates will keep buying a house out of reach for many, pushing more people to rent. Apartment construction is set to continue to account for the growing population in the US. Affordable housing complexes remain crucial in many large cities and will be needed as more people enter. Rental vacancies will continue threatening contractors, as many consumers may split housing with roommates and fulfill current stock to save money. Overall, industry revenue is forecast to expand at a CAGR of 1.8% to total an estimated $100.5 billion through the end of 2030.

With inflation currently within the RBA’s target range, falling interest rates are set to spur non-essential spending, including on travel, benefiting industry revenue. The industry is also likely to see more stability, fostering increased capital investment in on-site facilities and further consolidation efforts from larger players. Despite an encouraging outlook, one lingering concern is the introduction of international student caps, which could significantly impact student accommodation providers. While the political climate currently remains uncertain, if demand from international students plummets, these properties may be repurposed into regular rentals.
