The differences between public and private colleges Public colleges, also called state colleges, are mostly funded by state governments. Private colleges, on the other hand, are not funded by the government but by private donors and endowments. Typically, private institutions are  much more expensive. Public colleges tend to offer different tuition fees for students based on whether they live in-state or out-of-state, while private colleges have the same tuition cost for every student.

As of the academic year 2024/25, the Ambrose Alli University in Nigeria had the highest number of registered students in terms of full-time equivalents worldwide, reaching 536,277. The Tribhuvan University in Nepal and the Payame Noor University in Iran, which followed on the places behind, had approximately 484,000 and 458,000 registered students, respectively. This timeline shows the number of first-year students in the first university semester in Germany during the academic years 1995/1996 to 2023/2024. In 2023/2024, there were 481,962 first-year students starting their university studies in Germany. A total of around 2.87 million students were in enrolled in German universities.

This dataset provides the number of students enrolled in private colleges and universities in Qatar, categorized by educational institution, nationality, and gender. The data includes institutions such as Education City Universities, Hamad Bin Khalifa University, and Lusail University. It allows for the analysis of student enrollment trends across different institutions, nationalities (Qatari and Non-Qatari), and genders. The data here is from the report entitled Trends in Enrollment, Credit Attainment, and Remediation at Connecticut Public Universities and Community Colleges: Results from P20WIN for the High School Graduating Classes of 2010 through 2016. The report answers three questions: 1. Enrollment: What percentage of the graduating class enrolled in a Connecticut public university or community college (UCONN, the four Connecticut State Universities, and 12 Connecticut community colleges) within 16 months of graduation? 2. Credit Attainment: What percentage of those who enrolled in a Connecticut public university or community college within 16 months of graduation earned at least one year’s worth of credits (24 or more) within two years of enrollment? 3. Remediation: What percentage of those who enrolled in one of the four Connecticut State Universities or one of the 12 community colleges within 16 months of graduation took a remedial course within two years of enrollment? The Higher Education General Information Survey (HEGIS) series was designed to provide comprehensive information on various aspects of postsecondary education in the United States and its territories (American Samoa, Guam, Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands, and the Marshall Islands) and Department of Defense schools outside the United States. Data are available for both public and private two-year and four-year institutions. The HEGIS Fall Enrollment component for 1968 sought enrollment data from institutions of higher education. Key data elements, presented for up to five record types for each institution, include total enrollments of full-time and part-time students by class level, sex, race, and first-time enrollment status, as well as information on the institutions' type of accreditation, type of calendar system, and total number of students.

The number of university students in the Netherlands grew annually, with enrollment especially increasing between 2019 and 2021. In 2022, ******* students were registered at universities around the country. The largest share of these students was studying degrees related to behavior and social sciences, at around ******. By comparison, roughly ***** students were enrolled in a teaching program.  Internationalization of higher education    The growth in the number of university students is mostly the result of an increased number of international students finding their way to the Netherlands. In the last decade, the number of enrolled international students more than doubled. Whereas in 2008 less than ****** international students were studying in the Netherlands, by 2018 this had grown to just under ******.  Netherlands especially popular among German students    In the academic year 2018/2019, over ****** German students were enrolled at universities in the Netherlands. Germans formed by far the largest international student community in the country. In 2018/2019, the number of German students in the Netherlands was nearly twice as large as the second, third and fourth-largest communities (Italian, Chinese and Belgian students) combined.
