    Description

    Minnesota's original public land survey plat maps were created between 1848 and 1907 during the first government land survey of the state by the U.S. Surveyor General's Office. This collection of more than 3,600 maps includes later General Land Office (GLO) and Bureau of Land Management maps up through 2001. Scanned images of the maps are available in several digital formats and most have been georeferenced.

    The survey plat maps, and the accompanying survey field notes, serve as the fundamental legal records for real estate in Minnesota; all property titles and descriptions stem from them. They also are an essential resource for surveyors and provide a record of the state's physical geography prior to European settlement. Finally, they testify to many years of hard work by the surveying community, often under very challenging conditions.

    The deteriorating physical condition of the older maps (drawn on paper, linen, and other similar materials) and the need to provide wider public access to the maps, made handling the original records increasingly impractical. To meet this challenge, the Office of the Secretary of State (SOS), the State Archives of the Minnesota Historical Society (MHS), the Minnesota Department of Transportation (MnDOT), MnGeo and the Minnesota Association of County Surveyors collaborated in a digitization project which produced high quality (800 dpi), 24-bit color images of the maps in standard TIFF, JPEG and PDF formats - nearly 1.5 terabytes of data. Funding was provided by MnDOT.

    In 2010-11, most of the JPEG plat map images were georeferenced. The intent was to locate the plat images to coincide with statewide geographic data without appreciably altering (warping) the image. This increases the value of the images in mapping software where they can be used as a background layer.

    Donation sent to the University of Idaho Library Government Documents Librarian a CD containing General Land Office maps on it. A readme file on the CD contains this information:"I obtained the attached GLO maps from Mitch Price at River Design Group who obtained them from another source. These maps apparently do not have a date, I assume it was stripped off when they were rectified. These maps show the Great Northern Rail line, it arrived in Bonners Ferry in 1892. The Spokane International Railroad (Union Pacific purchased this line) built a bridge across the Kootenai R. in 1906."     This layer represents current city parcels within the City of Los Angeles. It shares topology with the Landbase parcel lines feature class. The Mapping and Land Records Division of the Bureau of Engineering, Department of Public Works provides the most current geographic information of the public right of way, ownership and land record information. The legal boundaries are determined on the ground by license surveyors in the State of California, and by recorded documents from the Los Angeles County Recorder's office and the City Clerk's office of the City of Los Angeles. Parcel and ownership information are available on NavigateLA, a website hosted by the Bureau of Engineering, Department of Public Works.Associated information about the landbase parcels is entered into attributes. Principal attributes include:PIN and PIND: represents the unique auto-generated parcel identifier and key to related features and tables. This field is related to the LA_LEGAL, LA_APN and LA_HSE_NBR tables. PIN contains spaces and PIND replaces those spaces with a dash (-).LA_LEGAL - Table attributes containing legal description.     Historically, the earliest Bakersfield “urban” subdivisions were not called tracts. The downtown area was subdivided into blocks and lots. Early citywide maps show the city blocks numbered from 1 to over 700. Some blocks were designated by letters rather than numbers. Each block was further subdivided into numbered lots. Thereafter housing subdivisions were called tracts and initially were named (example; Lowell Addition). Many of these “Named” tracts were also subdivided into blocks and lots. The earliest rural land subdivisions are the Sales Map Lands of J. B. Haggin and the Sales Map Lands of the Kern County l Land Company. The legal description of most modern lots is comprised of some combination of the fields: Document Type, Map Number, Phase and Lot Number. A “Block” field should be added for old parcels whose legal description is comprised of tract, block and lot (or just block and lot). The legal description fields for most of the older parcels are not populated at this time. Class(Domain)This field provides an opportunity to classify lots for specific purposes. The Private road lot class was created so these lots could be neglected when exporting parcels for the Community Maps Project. Landscape lot Private road lot School lot Sump lot Water Well lot Additional classes could be developed. For the vast majority of parcels the class field is not populated. Address The street address of a lot can be populated if the address point feature class objects have already been created and populated by the GIS Analyst at Community Development. Where there are multiple addresses on a parcel, this data is captured on the Address Point feature class. Assessor Parcel Number (APN) and Assessor Tax Numbers (ATN)The most important parcel layer attributes are the APN and ATN values that are assigned by the Kern County Assessor. An 8 digit APN is assigned to a property that has a specific geometry as defined by a legal description. If any new change occurs such as a lot line adjustment, then the geometry of the parcel(s) are changed and the APN’s for the affected properties are dropped and are never re-assigned. New unique APN’s are assigned to the affected properties and remain as long as the legal description of the geometry does not change. It usually takes at least a few months after a tract is recorded and the parcel feature class objects are developed before the County assigns APN’s to those parcels. The APN field is populated with “NEW” until such time as values are assigned. Parcel APNs can be acquired from the following sources: https://kernpublicworks.com/maps/parcel-maps/, Preliminary (January) and final (July) Kern County parcel GIS releases. Some Condominium common areas do not have an APN. The APN field is populated with “CONDOLOT”. These parcels are retained in order to preserve road right of ways. Compare City parcel layer features with County features to visualize why we retain these parcels.

    More MetadataThis layer depicts the 1 mile subdivsion control area around the Town of Hamilton and the Town of Middleburg, as established by Section 1241.03 of the Land Subdivision and Development Ordinance. The Town of Purcellville subdivision control area ceased to exist upon dissolution of the Purcellville Urban Growth Area Management Plan (PUGAMP) and the Town of Purcellville/County of Loudoun Annexation Agreement in 2013. The control area around the Town of Hamilton is based on the map prepared by the County of Loudoun entitled "Parcels within 1 mile of Hamilton" and the control area around the Town of Middleburg is based on the map prepared by the County of Loudoun entitled "Town of Middleburg One Mile Subdivision Control Limit".

    This layer contains data defining the exterior boundaries of subdivided land within subdivisions in Fairfax County, Virginia. The Block layer was created to depict subdivided land areas within subdivisions defined by recorded documents (plats) for the County of Fairfax. The polygons portrayed on this layer define the third portion of the County's Parcel Identification Numbering system (Map / Subdivision / Block / Parcel). Blocks are indicated on the property maps using a number within a single circle and boundaries that have heavy dashed lines. Information portrayed on this layer was initially derived from the ink-on-mylar property maps maintained by the County since the early 1960s.

    This countywide composite of parcels (cadastral) data for Monmouth County represents digitized property boundaries that were developed from best available local and municipal tax maps data. The normalized parcels data are compatible with the New Jersey Department of Treasury MOD-IV system currently used by tax assessors. Stewardship and maintenance of the data continue under the purview of the Monmouth County GIS Office as well as local municipal tax authorities. Parcel attributes were normalized to a standard structure, specified in the New Jersey GIS Parcel Mapping Standard, to store parcel information and provide a PIN (parcel identification number) field common to the PIN that was to be stored in the PAMS (Property Assessment Management System) database to replace the MOD-IV database. Please note that this parcel dataset is not intended for use as tax maps nor for legal purposes. The dataset is intended to provide reasonable representations of parcel boundaries primarily for planning purposes and cartographic representation. Please note cautions when performing a join with this dataset and MOD-IV property records, specifically regarding duplicate and erroneous records. All records may not be provided for in the parcels data or MOD-IV (Tax List Search) tables because of how the data and tables are constructed, or for temporal mismatches. MOD-IV provides for the uniform preparation, maintenance, presentation and storage of property tax information required by the Constitution of the State of New Jersey, New Jersey Statutes and rules promulgated by the Director of Taxation. MOD-IV maintains and updates all assessment records, and produces all statutorily required tax lists. These lists account for all parcels of real property as delineated and identified on each municipality's official tax map, as well as taxable values and descriptive data for each parcel.

    A parcel is a tract or plot of land surveyed and defined by legal ownership. Data were compiled from plats and deeds recorded at the Clerk of the Court and from historic tax maps. Source material was digitized or the coordinates were entered into the database via ARC/INFO Coordinate Geometry (COGO). Digital data from engineering companies has also been incorporated for newer subdivisions. A MCPI number is used to identify each parcel, which is a unique ID number further explained below. Purpose: Parcels are used to support a variety of services including assessment, permitting, subdivision review, planning, zoning, and economic development. Parcel data were initially developed to replace existing tax maps. As a result, there are parcel polygons digitized from tax maps that do not represent land parcels but are taxable entities such as leaseholds or easements. CELL: 2 digit map grid location of parcel center; the grid is comprised of 1000 by 1000 ft grid cells numbered as rows and columns (Columns numbered > 5 6 7 8 9 0; Rows numbered > 1 2 3 4). PARCEL: 4 digit location of polygon center based on the 1927 Virginia State Plane coordinate grid where an easting and northing measurement is taken. example: 6654 from: E 2229668 N475545. The MAP, CELL, and PARCEL values of a parcel do not change when a parcel is altered by a boundary line adjustment or becomes residue from a subdivision. The MAP, CELL, and PARCEL values may therefore be inconsistent with the location of polygon center. MAP, CELL, and PARCEL values have been manually altered for some parcels to agree with other databases; as a result, not all parcels can be located by the MAP, CELL, and PARCEL values.     This data layer contains polygon features representing the approximate size and location of parcels owned by the State of Virginia located within Prince William County, Virginia. It was created to provide basic information regarding property location and boundaries, and is used as a graphical representation of legally recorded deed and plat documents for properties. Parcel ownership and recordation information is not included in this layer but can be purchased seperately from the Office of Real Estate Assessments. Users should be aware that this data does not represent legal property boundary descriptions, nor is it suitable for boundary determination of individual parcels. Any depiction of physical improvements, property lines or boundaries is for general information only and shall not be used for the design modification or construction of improvements to real property or for flood plain determination.

    The layer was derived from a variety of source maps including: mylar county parcel maps, plats of surveys, deed descriptions, subdivision maps, and highway right-of-way plats. These source materials were of several different scales and were from dates ranging from the early 1900's to the present.

    Description: Parcels represent taxable pieces of property. A parcel is created by the San Diego County Assessor/Recorder/County Clerk (ARCC) to identify a specific portion of real property that is taxed at a certain rate for a certain owner. Tax parcels are typically the same as a legally subdivided lot but are not necessessarily so. For example, a single owner may own a legally subdivided piece of property but there may be two or more tax parcels covering that property. Legal subdivisions are shown in the LOTS layer.Parcels are keyed to the Assessor Parcel Number (APN) and the parcel polygon identifier (PARCELID).The SanGIS parcel layers are “stacked” parcels. That means that for any piece of ground there may be multiple parcels. For example, a condominium building in downtown San Diego may have 200 individual condos. Each condo is a separate taxable parcel. All 200 parcels will be associated with the same physical lot on the ground. When the SanGIS parcel layer is created each individual condo has a polygon representing the physical location of the parent parcel. In this example there will be 200 polygons all stacked on top of each other that represent the taxable parcels and each polygon will have the same physical characteristics (shape, size, area, location) – they are, essentially, copies of each other. However, other associated information (owner, document numbers, etc) will be different for each. In this case, each condo unit will have its own parcel number and there will be no single parcel representing the lot on the ground. Besides condominiums there are two other cases where you will see stacked parcels – possessory interest and mobile homes. Possessory interests have Assessor Parcel Numbers (APNs) that start with 76x. A possessory interest (or PI) parcel represents a taxable interest in the underlying, or parent, parcel but not necessarily ownership. For instance, a private company may have an arrangement with a University to operate a business on campus – a coffee shop or gift shop for example. The private business is taxable and is assigned a 76x APN and that APN is associated with the parent parcel which is owned by the University. Possessory interests do not represent ownership on the parcel, only a taxable interest in the underlying parent parcel.Mobile home parcel APNs start with 77x. In a manner similar to the possessory interests, mobile home owners own their home (coach) but not the underlying property on which the house sits. The actual mobile home is a separate taxable parcel associated with the mobile home park parent parcel. These taxable parcels all have the same polygon as the underlying parent parcel and will show as stacked parcels as well.This dataset contains parcels as shown on the Assessor Parcel Maps (APM). However, parcels shown in this layer may lag that of the official APM by a number of weeks due to how SanGIS is notified of the newly created parcel and the timing of publication of the parcel layer.This dataset contains the parcel polygon and associated parcel information provided by the County ARCC in thier Master Property Record (MPR file) and Parcel Assessment Record (PAR file). In addition to the MPR and PAR data assigned by ARCC, SanGIS may add situs address information if it has been provided by the addressing authority in which the parcel is situated. The situs address information provided by SanGIS may not be the same as the SITUS address data in the MPR.This dataset contains site address information along with owner names and addresses, and other property information. Key fields in this dataset include:Land use information provided in the NUCLEUS_USE_CD field (225 types with a 3-digit domain). The ASR_LANDUSE field is an older version of this field but comprises more generalized land uses (91 types). Generalized land use zoning information is provided in the NUCLEUS_ZONE_CD field. The ASR_ZONE field is an older version of this field. Land use zoning is generalized comprising 9 zone types. This can provide a useful approximation for parcels that are outside of the San Diego City and County zoning jurisdictions.Please note that land use and zoning fields are not regularly maintained by the Assessor's Office and should only be used as an approximate guide. Updates are only made when there is new construction, or a change in ownership. They are not updated when the County and Local Cities update their zoning data or when permit changes to properties are completed. Please refer to city and County official zoning datasets for official zoning information, and to SANDAG for more current land use data.

    Description

    We constructed a time-series spatial dataset of parcel boundaries for the period 1962-2005, in roughly 4-year intervals, by digitizing historical plat maps for Dane County and combining them with the 2005 GIS digital parcel dataset. The resulting datasets enable the consistent tracking of subdivision and development for all parcels over a given time frame. The process involved 1) dissolving and merging the 2005 digital Dane County parcel dataset based on contiguity and name, 2) further merging 2005 parcels based on the hard copy 2005 Plat book, and then 3) the reverse chronological merging of parcels to reconstruct previous years, at 4-year intervals, based on historical plat books. Additional land use information such as 1) whether a structure was actually constructed (using the companion digitized aerial photo dataset), 2) cover crop, and 3) permeable surface area, can be added to these datasets at a later date.
