    Description

This table contains the number of victims of suicide arranged by marital status, method, motives, age and sex. They represent the number deaths by suicide in the resident population of the Netherlands. The figures in this table are equal to the suicide figures in the causes of death statistics, because they are based on the same files. The causes of death statistics do not contain information on the motive of suicide. For the years 1950-1995, this information is obtained from a historical data file on suicides. For the years 1996-now the motive is taken from the external causes of death (Niet-Natuurlijke dood) file. Before the 9th revision of the International Statistical Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems (ICD), i.e. for the years 1950-1978, it was not possible to code "jumping in front of train/metro". For these years 1950-1978 "jumping in front of train/metro" has been left empty, and it has been counted in the group "other method". Relative figures have been calculated per 100 000 of the corresponding population group. The figures are calculated based on the average population of the corresponding year. Data available from: 1950 Status of the figures: The figures up to and including 2022 are final. Changes as of January 25th 2024: The provisional figures for 2022 have been made final unchanged. Changes as of August 29th 2023: - The provisional figures for 2022 have been added. - Some final figures of 2021 were incorrect and have been revised. A small adjustment was made in the number of deceased women from 60 to 69 years. When will new figures be published: In the third quarter of 2024 the provisional figures for 2023 will be published.

    Description

This data shows deaths (of people age 10 and over) from Suicide and Undetermined Injury, numbers and rates by gender, as 3-year moving-averages.

Suicide is a significant cause of premature deaths occurring generally at younger ages than other common causes of premature mortality. It may also be seen as an indicator of underlying rates of mental ill-health.

Directly Age-Standardised Rates (DASR) are shown in the data, where numbers are sufficient, so that death rates can be directly compared between areas. The DASR calculation applies Age-specific rates to a Standard (European) population to cancel out possible effects on crude rates due to different age structures among populations, thus enabling direct comparisons of rates.

The figures in this dataset include deaths recorded as suicide (people age 10 and over) and undetermined injury (age 15 and over) as those are mostly likely also to have been caused by self-harm. The population denominators for rates are age 10 and over.

Data source: Public Health England, Public Health Outcomes Framework (PHOF) indicator 4.10. This data is updated annually.

    Description

The indicator measures the number of deaths that result from suicide per 100 000 inhabitants. The World Health Organization defines suicide as an act deliberately initiated and performed by a person in the full knowledge or expectation of its fatal outcome. Data on causes of death (COD) refer to the underlying cause which - according to the World Health Organisation (WHO) - is "the disease or injury which initiated the train of morbid events leading directly to death, or the circumstances of the accident or violence which produced the fatal injury". COD data are derived from death certificates. The medical certification of death is an obligation in all Member States. The data are presented as standardised death rates, meaning they are adjusted to a standard age distribution in order to measure death rates independently of different age structures of populations. This approach improves comparability over time and between countries. The standardised death rates used here are calculated on the basis of a standard European population. The number of suicides in certain countries may be under-reported because of the stigma associated with the act for religious, cultural or other reasons. The comparability of suicide data between countries is also affected by a number of reporting criteria, including how a person’s intention of killing him- or herself is ascertained or who is responsible for completing the death certificate.

    Description

Table of directly (DSR) age-standardised rates of suicides per 100,000 population, and Indirectly (SMR) (Includes undetermined Injuries), all ages and age 15 plus, three year (pooled) average and annual, by sex.

Deaths from intentional self-harm and injury undetermined whether accidentally or purposely inflicted (ICD-10 X60-X84, Y10-Y34 exc Y33.9, ICD-9 E950-E959 and E980-E989 exc E988.8), registered in the respective calendar year(s).

DSR stands for Directly age-Standardised Rates.

Mortality rates are age standardised using the European Standard Population as defined by the World Health Organisation.

3 year average rates are calculated as the average of single year rates for 3 successive years.

Standardised Mortality Ratio (SMR), England = 100.

The annual rates at borough level are likely to be subject to relatively high levels of variability of numbers of suicides from year to year because of the relatively small numebrs of suicides that occur within boroughs. When comparing boroughs against each other, the three-year combined rate would provide a higher level of confidence.

NHS mental health information can be found here.

Various other suicide indicators are available from IC NHS website, including years of life lost, crude death rates, and indirectly standardised ratios (SMR). Follow: Compendium of population health indicators > Illness and Condition > Mental health and behavioural disorders

    Description

This table contains the number of deaths in the population of the Netherlands by underlying cause of death (short list), sex and age-group (at time of death). Since 2013 Statistics Netherlands is using Iris software for automatic coding for cause of death. This improved the international comparison of the data. The change in coding did cause a considerable shift in the statistic. Since 2013 the (yearly) ICD-10 updates are applied. Data available from: 1950 Status of the figures: The figures for 2023 are provisional, all other figures are final. Changes as of July 18th 2024: The provisional figures for 2023 have been added. Changes as of February 14th 2024: A correction has been implemented concerning the average population for the years 2015 and 2016, there was a shift in all age categories. Changes as of December 11th 2023: - The final figures of 2022 have been added. - Due to a change in the allocation of codes in group 17, external causes, there have been several shifts in the groups 17.1, 17.1.1, 17.1.1.2, 1.1.5 and 17.5 in the years 1996 to 2021. These are Sequelae of transport accidents, suicide and homicide. - Furthermore a correction has been implemented concerning the years 1996 to 2002, which involved some shifts in the age categories, sex and cause of death. The changes concerned >5 persons per year. When will new figures be published? The aim is to publish final figures for 2023 in the fourth quarter of 2024.

Description

Crude death rate from suicide and intentional self-harm per 100 000 people, by age group. Suicide registration methods vary between countries and over time. Figures do not include deaths from events of undetermined intent (part of which should be considered as suicides) and attempted suicides which did not result in death.
