The Indonesian sunflower-seed and safflower oil market fell remarkably to $9.4M in 2024, declining by -46.1% against the previous year. Overall, consumption, however, recorded a buoyant expansion. The price of refined sunflower oil in the United States for Q4 2023 reached 2015 USD/MT in December. Similarly, the price trend for refined sunflower oil in China reached 1187 USD/MT in December 2023. Whereas, Germany’s refine sunflower oil prices reached 1523 USD/MT in the same month.

The sales price of sunflower oil fell from 810 euros per metric ton in February 2016 to 705 euros per ton in September 2019. Prices saw a considerable uptick at the end of 2016. However, this changed in the following months.

The sunflower and its products

The sunflower which, is not a native plant to Europe, was brought to the continent by the Spanish colonizers of the New World. Since its introduction, it has spread over the European continent. It can be cultivated at cooler temperatures and its seeds can be used for consumption or oil production. The oil is used for food preparation or as an ingredient in food products, for example margarines. Sunflower cake is a byproduct from the oil extraction and is commonly used as feed.

UK imports

The UK’s imports of sunflower oil amounted to roughly 300 thousand metric tons in 2017/18, which constitutes a large spike compared to earlier years. When we deduct non-EU imports, we can see that the spike in import volumes can be attributed to shipments from the EU. EU exports to the UK of sunflower cake also had a significant volume and amounted to around 170 thousand tons in 2017/2018. In the UK, sunflower oil is the second most popular oil used for cooking and salads.

In May 2023, the monthly average price for sunflower oil in Egypt stood at 62.11 Egyptian pounds (2.01 U.S. dollars) per liter. When compared to the previous year, the price increased by 78.89 percent. In the period under review, the price followed an overall increasing trend.

Over the past year, the prices for sunflower oil have doubled, against robust demand and depleting sunflower seed stocks. The dry weather conditions negatively affected the sunflower crop yield in 2020, but the market is now seeing a sturdy recovery. The production of sunflower oil is forecast to increase in 2021 driven by strong demand that promotes investments in the expansion of harvested areas.

The price of crude sunflower oil in the USA reached 798 USD/MT in Q4 2023. In December 2023, the price of crude sunflower oil in China hit 938 USD/MT. In Germany, crude sunflower oil prices were 1167 USD/MT in Q4 2023.

For the third consecutive year, the Indian market for crude sunflower-seed and safflower oil recorded growth in sales value, which increased by 19% to $4B in 2024. Over the period under review, consumption recorded prominent growth. Over the period under review, the market reached the maximum level in 2024 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.

As of December 2023, the retail price index of sunflower oil in India was approximately 136. This meant, the RPI of sunflower oil had increased by 36 percent compared to the base year of 2016. The level of consumption peaked at $8.9B in 2022; however, from 2023 to 2024, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2024, the Ukrainian market for crude sunflower-seed and safflower oil decreased by -1.2% to $733M, falling for the second consecutive year after two years of growth. Over the period under review, consumption recorded noticeable growth. As a result, consumption attained the peak level of $916M. From 2023 to 2024, the growth of the market remained at a somewhat lower figure.

This statistic shows the average price per tonne of sunflower seeds in the United Kingdom (UK) from 2000 to 2015, according to agricultural commodity price figures. In 2012, the average price per tonne of sunflower seeds was 394.27 British pounds, which has decreased to 288.63 British pounds per tonne by 2015. The North American market for refined sunflower-seed or safflower oil reached $12.8B in 2024, with an increase of 6.4% against the previous year. Over the period under review, consumption posted a prominent expansion. The level of consumption peaked at $13.4B in 2022; however, from 2023 to 2024, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.
