    Description

This report shows average annual earnings for the following four earnings measures, provisionally showing overall figures for the NHS HCHS workforce (excluding primary care staff) in England in NHS Trusts and other core organisations in England and NHS Support Organisations and Central Bodies. Mean annual basic pay per FTE – is the mean amount of basic pay paid per 1 full-time equivalent post in a 12-month period. Mean annual earnings per person – is the mean amount paid to an individual in a 12-month period, regardless of the contracted FTE. Mean annual basic pay per person – is the mean amount of basic pay paid to an individual in a 12-month period, regardless of the contracted FTE. Mean annual non-basic pay per person – is the mean amount, over and above basic pay, paid to an individual in a 12 month period, regardless of the contracted FTE (this is further split into ten separate measures – see Appendix A for a list and descriptions) These figures are based on the most recent twelve months of data and are presented by staff group in the publication (Tables 1 & 2). This publication also includes tables which examine the non-basic pay elements in greater details (Table 3). Data are available every month from 30 September 2009 onwards. We have created a repository of the code used to produce the NHS Staff Earnings publication which is available on GitHub via the Related Links section below. Monthly NHS Workforce Statistics and monthly NHS Staff Sickness Absence reports and data relating to the General Practice workforce and the Independent Healthcare Provider workforce are also available via the Related Links below. Description

This data is an accurate summary of the validated data extracted from the NHS's HR and Payroll system. It has a provisional status as the data may change slightly over time where trusts make updates to their live operational systems. In addition to the regular monthly reports there are a series of quarterly reports (first published on 26 July 2016 looking at the data for March 2016) which include statistics on staff in Trusts and CCGs and information for NHS Support Organisations and Central Bodies. The quarterly analysis will be published each; September (showing June statistics) December (showing September statistics) March (showing December statistics) June (showing March statistics). Note: From March 2017 these quarterly reports will also include statistics on; i) Bank staff employed directly by trusts and paid through the Electronic Staff Record (ESR) pay and human resources system (as covered by our consultation on NHS workforce statistics). They are exploratory and experimental statistics. ii) The nationality of staff (previously published every six months) showing quarterly figures from September 2015 onwards. CSV data is available for every month back to September 2009 within the March 2016 report. Due to their size they are broken down into several files. A link to the March 2016 data is given in the 'Related Links' section below. Additional healthcare workforce data relating to GPs and Independent Sector workforce are also available; links to this data are available below. Description

This is the latest compendium publication in the NHS Vacancy Statistics series containing vacancy related data for the NHS which provide four different views on recruitment information for the NHS. Data from NHS Jobs, the Electronic Staff Record (ESR) and Trac Recruitment Management Software (Trac) provide a range of proxy data sources for NHS vacancies. The series also includes management information related to vacancies within the NHS which have been collected by NHS England and NHS Improvement (NHSE&I). Users should note these data do not indicate how much of the reported substantive gap is filled by temporary staff. NHS Jobs is transitioning users to the new NHS Jobs service and an increasing number of Trusts are now using that to advertise their vacancies. Until a data flow has been established from the new service, we are unable to quantify the number of vacancies being advertised on it. Users of the data should be aware that affected Trusts may appear to show lower levels of vacancies than reported in the past. National and local totals are also affected. Due to the complex nature of how NHS vacancy data is defined and collected, all data sources should be treated with a degree of caution. NHS Digital look forward to developing the compendium publication further for future iterations of the series and remain committed to providing the best, most accurate and useful information possible to support the NHS and to serve the public good. To help with the development of this publication, feedback is continually welcomed and can be sent to: enquiries@nhsdigital.nhs.uk with the subject heading ‘NHS Vacancy Statistics publication feedback’.

    Jul 1, 2022 - Dec 31, 2024
    Description

The aim of the publication is to inform users about activity and usage of GP appointments historically and how primary care is impacted by seasonal pressures, such as winter. NHS England publishes this information to support winter preparedness and provide information about some activity within primary care. The publication covers historic appointments, marked as attended or did not attend, from national to practice level coverage. The aim is to inform users, who range from a healthcare professional to an inquiring citizen, about appointments within primary care. The publication includes data from participating practices and Primary Care Networks (PCNs) using EMIS, TPP, Eva Health formerly known as Microtest (up until February 2021), Informatica (up until November 2024), Cegedim (previously Vision), Babylon (up until December 2024) and Evergreen Life GP systems. NHS England produce this information monthly, containing information about the most recent month and previous months. The publication includes important information, however it does not show the totality of GP activity/workload. The data presented only contains information which was captured on the GP practice and PCN appointment systems. This limits the activity reported on and does not represent all work happening within a primary care setting or assess the complexity of activity. No patient identifiable information has been collected or is included in this release. Between December 2020 and present the data contained in this publication will no longer contain covid-19 vaccination activity collected from GP System Suppliers as part of the General Practice Appointments Data. These appointments have been removed using the methodology outlined in the supporting information. In order to gain a more complete picture of general practice activity we will publish covid-19 vaccination activity carried out by PCN’s or GP Practice’s from the NIMS (National Immunisation Management Service) vaccination dataset. This publication now includes statistics on the duration of appointments, SDS role and the recorded national category, service setting and context type of the appointment. Both HCP Type and SDS role are currently presented for comparison purposes, but moving forward the intention is to only publish SDS Role Groups and remove HCP Type. Further information can be found in the supporting guidance below. Appointments recorded in Primary Care Network (PCN) appointment systems are included within this publication at national level from June 2023.

    Description

This publication provides the most timely picture available of people using NHS funded secondary mental health, learning disabilities and autism services in England. These are experimental statistics which are undergoing development and evaluation. This information will be of use to people needing access to information quickly for operational decision making and other purposes. More detailed information on the quality and completeness of these statistics is made available later in our Mental Health Bulletin: Annual Report publication series. • COVID-19 and the production of statistics Due to the coronavirus illness (COVID-19) disruption, the quality and coverage of some of our statistics has been affected, for example by an increase in non-submissions for some datasets. We are also seeing some different patterns in the submitted data. For example, fewer patients are being referred to hospital and more appointments being carried out via phone/telemedicine/email. Therefore, data should be interpreted with care over the COVID-19 period. • Early release of statistics To support the ongoing COVID-19 work, Provisional May 2021 monthly statistics were made available early and presented on our supplementary information pages. Please see the 'Supplementary information requests' section below. • Updates to measures For details of new measures, or changes to existing measures, see the 'Notes on Measures' page. Full details of any changes are also available in the associated Metadata file.

    Description

This publication reports on Admitted Patient Care activity in England for the financial year 2023-24. This report includes but is not limited to analysis of hospital episodes by patient demographics, diagnoses, external causes/injuries, operations, bed days, admission method, time waited, specialty, provider level analysis and Adult Critical Care (ACC). It describes NHS Admitted Patient Care Activity, Adult Critical Care activity and performance in hospitals in England. The purpose of this publication is to inform and support strategic and policy-led processes for the benefit of patient care and may also be of interest to researchers, journalists and members of the public interested in NHS hospital activity in England. The data source for this publication is Hospital Episode Statistics (HES). It contains final data and replaces the provisional data that are released each month. HES contains records of all admissions, appointments and attendances at NHS-commissioned hospital services in England. The HES data used in this publication are called 'Finished Consultant Episodes', and each episode relates to a period of care for a patient under a single consultant at a single hospital. Therefore, this report counts the number of episodes of care for admitted patients rather than the number of patients. Description

This publication provides the most timely statistics available relating to NHS funded secondary mental health, learning disabilities and autism services in England. This information will be of use to people needing access to information quickly for operational decision making and other purposes. These statistics are derived from submissions made using version 2.0 of the Mental Health Services Dataset (MHSDS). NHS Digital review the quality and completeness of the submissions used to create these statistics on an ongoing basis. More information about this work can be found in the Accuracy and reliability section of this report. Fully detailed information on the quality and completeness of particular statistics in this release is not available due to the timescales involved in reviewing submissions and engaging with data providers. The information that has been obtained at the time of publication is made available in the Provider Feedback sections of the Data Quality Reports which accompany this release. Information gathered after publication is released in future editions of this publication series. More detailed information on the quality and completeness of these statistics and a summary of how these statistics may be interpreted is made available later in our Mental Health Bulletin: Annual Report publication series. All elements of this publication, other editions of this publication series, and related annual publication series' can be found in the Related Links below. This edition includes statistics produced for the Five Year Forward View (FYFV) for Mental Health Dashboard. These can be found in the Children and Young People's Mental Health Indicators Reference Tables and Adult Mental Health Services Selected NHS England Measures Reference Tables. This information has been previously made available on the NHS Digital Supplementary Information web page. The format of reporting of these statistics will be updated in future releases to improve clarity and accessibility. More information about the FYFV Dashboard can be found in the Related Links below. Correction: The statistics relating to Children and Young People Mental Health Indicators were corrected on 9 February 2018. These statistics are meant to count people as accessing services in each financial year where they have received two care contacts. The statistics released originally incorrectly excluded people who accessed services in in a previous financial year. NHS Digital apologises for any inconvenience caused. Please note: MHSDS Monthly: Final July to September 2017 Children and Young People Mental Health Indicators Reference Tables has been updated with an additional note, and now includes the statistics for the number of people under the age of 18 being treated on adult wards. A revised version of Bed days on adult wards for people aged 0-17 and Number of people aged 0-17 on adult wards is available on our supplementary information pages; this file adjusts the measures for known data quality issues to produce the most accurate information possible. A correction has been made to this publication on 10 September 2018. This amendment relates to statistics in the monthly CSV data file; the specific measures effected are listed in the “Corrected Measures” CSV. All listed measures have now been corrected. NHS Digital apologises for any inconvenience caused.

    Description

These are the provisional summary results from the 2023/24 Estates Return Information Collection (ERIC), a mandatory collection for all NHS trusts including Ambulance trusts. It comprises information relating to the costs of providing and maintaining the NHS Estate including buildings, maintaining and equipping hospitals, the provision of services e.g. laundry and food, and the costs and consumption of utilities. Since the 2018/19 collection NHS England's Workforce and Estates Team and Estates Division have jointly undertaken additional measures to improve data quality. These include extra validations on point of entry and alignment of communications and clarifications to data providers, and an enhanced assurance process once the initial collection phase had been completed. Chief Executive signoff of returns is also required a part of the "commit data" process. NHS England engages closely with trusts to clarify requirements and support accurate reporting via webinars and our timely user support service. Data users should note that several data fields are currently labelled as unreliable due to having changed definition since the previous reporting period, or due to being introduced relatively recently. Please see the introduction and data quality worksheets for more information.

    Description

This report shows provisional monthly figures for headcount and full-time equivalent of NHS Hospital and Community Health Service (HCHS) staff groups working in Trusts and CCGs in England (excluding primary care staff). This data is an accurate summary of the validated data extracted from the NHS's HR and Payroll system. It has a provisional status as the data may change slightly over time where trusts make updates to their live operational systems. The first of a series of quarterly reports was published on 26 July 2016 looking at the data for March 2016. It includes an additional set of statistics on staff in Trusts and CCGs and information for NHS Support Organisations and Central Bodies. Going forward the quarterly analysis will be published each; September (showing June statistics) December (showing September statistics) March (showing December statistics) June (showing March statistics) Note: CSV data is available for every month back to September 2009 within the March 2016 report. Due to their size they are broken down into several files. A link to the March 2016 data is given in the 'Related Links' section below. We welcome feedback on the methodology and tables within this publication. Description

Primary Care Networks were created in July 2019 to provide accessible and integrated primary, mental health, and community care for patients. The PCN contract is a Directed Enhanced Service and aims to increase the primary care workforce by 26,000 by 2024. The bulk of the PCN workforce consists of Direct Patient Care staff, funded by the Additional Roles Reimbursement Scheme (ARRS), and each PCN has the flexibility and autonomy to determine which roles are required to meet the specific needs of their local populations. Initially, recruitment focused on clinical pharmacists and social prescribing link workers, with more roles being included over subsequent years. Information about the PCN workforce is provided directly by each PCN, and recorded in the National Workforce Reporting Service (NWRS) which is the same system that is used to collect information about the general practice workforce. This report includes England, Integrated Care Board (ICB), Sub-ICB Location and PCN-level figures for Clinical Directors, Direct Patient Care Workers and Admin/Non-Clinical staff working in PCNs on 31 December 2023. The level of detail in the information that we can collect about each individual varies, as there are different ways that individuals can be contracted to work for their PCN. Some staff work directly for the PCN, including Clinical Directors, administrative workers, and some Direct Patient Care staff. These individuals may have been newly recruited to the PCN, or could be staff transferring some or all of their working hours from a general practice or other organisation. Alternatively, an individual may be employed by a member organisation within the PCN – such as a hospital trust or charity – and deployed to work for the PCN. In both cases, details about the staff member, including the hours worked for the PCN, are recorded in the NWRS. However, in some cases, a role – for example a physiotherapist – is not staffed permanently by a specific individual. Instead, the working hours are covered by a group of physiotherapists, employed by another organisation such as the local ICB, and deployed to the PCN as a “contracted service,” which up until the September 2020 release were referred to in this publication series as “pooled resource”. In these cases, the providing organisation holds a contract with the PCN to deliver the physiotherapy service and supplies appropriately qualified staff, possibly on a rota’d basis. Where the healthcare provision is covered by a contracted service of this nature, it is not possible to identify the separate individuals working within the PCN and in these cases, the PCN provides us with information about the average weekly working hours covered by that “contracted service”. This means that although we can calculate proxy full-time equivalent (FTE) figures relating to the service, no information about headcount or workforce characteristics can be inferred. This means that headcount figures presented in the accompanying Bulletin do not include provision from these “contracted services.” The completeness and coverage of PCN workforce data is constantly improving and more PCNs are using the new NWRS. We now believe data quality is sufficient to warrant monthly collections and publications, and as such, monthly publications have commenced from January 2023. We are working continually to improve our publications and we welcome feedback from all users by email to: PrimaryCareWorkforce@nhs.net.
