    Dissertation and dataset present an archaeological study of the Huarmey Valley region, located on the northern coast of Peru. My work uses modern and innovative digital methods. My research focuses on better understanding the location of one of the most important sites in the valley, Castillo de Huarmey, by learning about the context in which it functioned. The Imperial Mausoleum located at the site, along with the burial chamber beneath it, is considered one of the most important discoveries regarding the Wari culture in recent years.In the dissertation, I address issues concerning both the location of the site on a macro scale - in the entire Huarmey Valley, on a micro scale - the context of the Huarmey Valley delta – and the spatial relationships within the burial chamber located beneath the Mausoleum. I ask the questions (i) How did Castillo de Huarmey communicate with other sites dated to the same period located in the valley and also in adjacent valleys? Did this influence its role in the region? (ii) Is the Mausoleum at Castillo de Huarmey located intentionally and what was the meaning of this location at the micro and macro scale? (iii) What spatial relations existed between Castillo de Huarmey and other sites from the same period? (iv) Does the position of the artifacts, found in situ in the burial chamber, show important relationships between buried individuals? (v) Does spatial analysis show interesting spatial patterns within the burial inside the chamber?The questions can be answered by describing and testing the digital methods proposed in the doctoral dissertation related to both field data collection and their analysis and interpretation. These methods were selected and adapted to a specific area (the Northern Coast of Peru) and to the objective of answering the questions posed in the thesis. The wide range of digital methods used in archaeology is made possible by the use of Geographic Information Systems (abbreviated GIS) in research. To date, GIS in archaeology is used in three aspects (Wheatley and Gillings 2002): (i) statistical and spatial analysis to obtain new information, (ii) landscape archaeology, and (iii) Cultural Resource Management.My dissertation is divided into three main components that discuss the types of digital methods used in archaeology. The division of these methods will be adapted to the level of detail of the research (from the location of the site in the region, to the delta of the Huarmey Valley, to the burial chamber of the Mausoleum) and to the way they are used in archaeology (from Cultural Resource Management, to archaeological landscape analysis, to statistical-spatial analysis). One of the aims of the dissertation is to show the methodological path of the use of digital methods, i.e. from the acquisition of data in the field, through analysis, to their interpretation in a cultural context. However, the main objective of my research is to interpret the spatial relationships from the macro to the micro level, in the case described, against the background of other sites located in the valley, the location of Castillo de Huarmey in the context of the valley delta, and finally to the burial chamber of the Mausoleum. The uniqueness of the described burial makes the research and its results pioneering in nature.As a final result of my work I would like to determine whether relationships can be demonstrated between the women buried in the burial chamber and whether the location of particular categories of artifacts can illustrate specific spatial patterns of burial. Furthermore, my goal is to attempt to understand the relationship between the Imperial Mausoleum and other sites (archival as well as newly discovered) located in the Huarmey Valley and to understand the role of the site's location.Published dataset represents, described in the dissertation, mobile GIS survey on the site PV35-5 created in Survey123, ESRI application; xml and xls used for creating the survey that was used during the research of the site, as well as the results of the survey published in ArcGIS Pro package. The package includes collected data as points, saved as .shp, as well as ortophotomaps (as geotiff) and Digital Elevation Model and hillshade of PV35-5. The published dataset represents part of the dissertation describing archaeological landscape analysis of Huarmey Valley’s delta.

Present your images, videos, and PDF files collected using ArcGIS Field Maps or ArcGIS Survey123 workflows.     The Hudson River Estuary Shoreline was mapped in the field and on desktop to inventory all existing 'Engineered' and 'Natural' shorelines. Each shoreline segment was inventoried using a pre-defined set of descriptions for 'Nature', Structure', 'Substrate', 'Adjacent Land Use', and 'Condition'. Each shoreline was geo-located using ArcGIS Survey 123 on a computer tablet and a photo was taken for shorelines mapped in the field. Engineered shorelines immediately adjacent to railroad tracks and the river were mapped from desktop and used stock photos of rail road shorelines to represent the existing condition..

    In this lesson, students are introduced to the idea and practice of “remote sensing” and provided with hands-on, field-based experience using standardized stream habitat assessment protocols (the National Rivers and Streams Assessment [NRSA]), publically available spatial data, and GPS/GIS technology and workflows to develop multi-scale scale profiles of the physical habitat characteristics of a small portion a selected watershed (the exercise can be adapted to focus on any watershed for which high resolution air photos are available). Students will work individually or as a team (e.g. in pairs) to use a Survey123 App adapted from the NRSA protocol for assessing the habitat and physical characteristics – particularly those that have been influenced by human activity – of the riparian area of a stream or river. This lesson requires the instructor to have access to an ArcGIS Online (AGOL) Creator or Editor account and for students to have access to mobile devices with the Survey123 App installed (which will require students to have an AGOL account). A Survey123 App designed for this lesson that can be adapted to suit the instructor’s needs is included in xml format.

    Description

    This study focuses on the use of citizen science and GIS tools for collecting and analyzing data on Rose Swanson Mountain in British Columbia, Canada. While several organizations collect data on wildlife habitats, trail mapping, and fire documentation on the mountain, there are few studies conducted on the area and citizen science is not being addressed. The study aims to aggregate various data sources and involve citizens in the data collection process using ArcGIS Dashboard and ArcGIS Survey 123. These GIS tools allow for the integration and analysis of different kinds of data, as well as the creation of interactive maps and surveys that can facilitate citizen engagement and data collection. The data used in the dashboard was sourced from BC Data Catalogue, Explore the Map, and iNaturalist. Results show effective citizen participation, with 1073 wildlife observations and 3043 plant observations. The dashboard provides a user-friendly interface for citizens to tailor their map extent and layers, access surveys, and obtain information on each attribute included in the pop-up by clicking. Analysis on classification of fuel types, ecological communities, endangered wildlife species presence and critical habitat, and scope of human activities can be conducted based on the distribution of data. The dashboard can provide direction for researchers to develop research or contribute to other projects in progress, as well as advocate for natural resource managers to use citizen science data. The study demonstrates the potential for GIS and citizen science to contribute to meaningful discoveries and advancements in areas.

    This data should be used carefully for statistical analysis and reporting due to missing perimeters (see Use Limitation in metadata). Some fires are missing because historical records were lost or damaged, were too small for the minimum cutoffs, had inadequate documentation or have not yet been incorporated into the database. Other known errors with the fire perimeter database include duplicate fires and over-generalization. Over-generalization, particularly with large old fires, may show unburned "islands" within the final perimeter as burned. Users of the fire perimeter database must exercise caution in application of the data. Careful use of the fire perimeter database will prevent users from drawing inaccurate or erroneous conclusions from the data. This dataset may differ in California compared to that available from the National Interagency Fire Center (NIFC) due to different requirements between the two datasets. The data covers fires back to 1878.

    Current criteria for data collection are as follows:

    CAL FIRE (including contract counties) submit perimeters ≥10 acres in timber, ≥50 acres in brush, or ≥300 acres in grass, and/or ≥3 impacted residential or commercial structures, and/or caused ≥1 fatality.

    All cooperating agencies submit perimeters ≥10 acres.


    Version update:

    Firep24_1 was released in April 2025. Five hundred forty-eight fires from the 2024 fire season were added to the database (2 from BIA, 56 from BLM, 197 from CAL FIRE, 193 from Contract Counties, 27 from LRA, 8 from NPS, 55 from USFS and 8 from USFW). Six perimeters were added from the 2025 fire season (as a special case due to an unusual January fire siege). Five duplicate fires were removed, and the 2023 Sage was replaced with a more accurate perimeter. There were 900 perimeters that received updated attribution (705 removed “FIRE” from the end of Fire Name field and 148 replaced Complex IRWIN ID with Complex local incident number for COMPLEX_ID field). The following fires were identified as meeting our collection criteria but are not included in this version and will hopefully be added in a future update: Addie (2024-CACND-002119), Alpaugh (2024-CACND-001715), South (2024-CATIA-001375). One perimeter is missing containment date that will be updated in the next release.


    Cross checking CALFIRS reporting for new CAL FIRE submissions to ensure accuracy with cause class was added to the compilation process. The cause class domain description for “Powerline” was updated to “Electrical Power” to be more inclusive of cause reports.

    The California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection's Fire and Resource Assessment Program (FRAP) annually maintains and distributes an historical wildland fire perimeter dataset from across public and private lands in California. The GIS data is developed with the cooperation of the United States Forest Service Region 5, the Bureau of Land Management, California State Parks, National Park Service and the United States Fish and Wildlife Service and is released in the spring with added data from the previous calendar year. Although the dataset represents the most complete digital record of fire perimeters in California, it is still incomplete, and users should be cautious when drawing conclusions based on the data.

    This data should be used carefully for statistical analysis and reporting due to missing perimeters (see Use Limitation in metadata).     All cooperating agencies submit perimeters ≥10 acres.

    Firep24_1 was released in April 2025. Five hundred forty-eight fires from the 2024 fire season were added to the database (2 from BIA, 56 from BLM, 197 from CAL FIRE, 193 from Contract Counties, 27 from LRA, 8 from NPS, 55 from USFS and 8 from USFW). Six perimeters were added from the 2025 fire season (as a special case due to an unusual January fire siege). Five duplicate fires were removed, and the 2023 Sage was replaced with a more accurate perimeter. There were 900 perimeters that received updated attribution (705 removed “FIRE” from the end of Fire Name field and 148 replaced Complex IRWIN ID with Complex local incident number for COMPLEX_ID field). The following fires were identified as meeting our collection criteria but are not included in this version and will hopefully be added in a future update: Addie (2024-CACND-002119), Alpaugh (2024-CACND-001715), South (2024-CATIA-001375). One perimeter is missing containment date that will be updated in the next release.

    Cross checking CALFIRS reporting for new CAL FIRE submissions to ensure accuracy with cause class was added to the compilation process. The cause class domain description for “Powerline” was updated to “Electrical Power” to be more inclusive of cause reports.


    Includes separate layers filtered by criteria as follows:

    California Fire Perimeters (All): Unfiltered. The entire collection of wildfire perimeters in the database. It is scale dependent and starts displaying at the country level scale.

    Recent Large Fire Perimeters (5000 acres): Filtered for wildfires greater or equal to 5,000 acres for the last 5 years of fires (2020-January 2025), symbolized with color by year and is scale dependent and starts displaying at the country level scale. Year-only labels for recent large fires.

    California Fire Perimeters (1950+): Filtered for wildfires that started in 1950-January 2025. Symbolized by decade, and display starting at country level scale.

    The Golden-winged Warbler (GWWA) is a rapidly declining species of migratory songbird that is currently being considered for listing under the US Endangered Species Act. The golden-winged warbler relies on early successional habitat (old fields and young forest) which must be created and maintained to support breeding birds. In an effort to increase populations throughout the breeding range, creation and maintenance of habitat is essential.     The California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection's Fire and Resource Assessment Program (FRAP) annually maintains and distributes an historical wildland fire perimeter dataset from across public and private lands in California. The GIS data is developed with the cooperation of the United States Forest Service Region 5, the Bureau of Land Management, California State Parks, National Park Service and the United States Fish and Wildlife Service and is released in the spring with added data from the previous calendar year. Although the dataset represents the most complete digital record of fire perimeters in California, it is still incomplete, and users should be cautious when drawing conclusions based on the data.

    This data should be used carefully for statistical analysis and reporting due to missing perimeters (see Use Limitation in metadata). Some fires are missing because historical records were lost or damaged, were too small for the minimum cutoffs, had inadequate documentation or have not yet been incorporated into the database.
