    Description

Australia’s cruise industry experienced a robust recovery in the 23/24 season, with Sydney Harbour sailing ahead as New South Wales’ leading port of call for cruise ships. Sydney Harbour welcomed a surge in cruise ship visits in the 2024 financial year, with over 305 vessels docking at its terminals, a notable rise from the previous year's approximately 260 visits. This marked a significant recovery for cruise tourism in Australia's largest city, following years of disruption due to global travel restrictions. Sydney’s Overseas Passenger Terminal (OPT) remains the primary terminal for these passenger vessels, followed by White Bay Passenger Terminal (WBPT). Australia’s cruise tourism recovery The revival of cruise ship visits and increased passenger traffic in the 22/23 and 23/24 periods had a substantial economic impact on Australia’s cruise industry. In the 2024 financial year, the country’s cruise industry generated a total economic output exceeding 8.4 billion Australian dollars, representing an almost 50 percent increase from the previous year. This growth was reflected in passenger spending patterns, with accommodation emerging as the top expenditure category among cruise guests that year, followed by food and beverages. Most visited Australian cruise ports and terminals While Sydney remains the country’s premier cruise destination, other ports in New South Wales, including Port of Eden and Newcastle, also welcomed substantial cruise vessel entries in 23/24. Home to the Great Barrier Reef, Queensland is another state consistently recording high cruise ship entry volumes, with some of its busiest terminals including Brisbane International Cruise Terminal (BICT), Port of Airlie, Cairns Seaport, and Moreton Bay. Other state and territory capitals’ ports, such as Hobart, Melbourne, Adelaide, Darwin, and Perth (Fremantle), also have an enduring appeal among international and domestic cruise vacationers. This widespread distribution of cruise activity highlights the broad economic benefits of the industry across Australia.

    Description

In 2024, Australia imported coffee and coffee substitutes to the value of almost 1.33 billion Australian dollars. Over the past decade, coffee imports to Australia increased significantly from around 813 million Australian dollars’ worth of coffee imports in 2015. Coffee consumption Over the years, coffee has become a nationwide obsession that is now part of Australia’s cultural identity. Brands such as Nestlé (Nescafé and Nespresso), Vittoria, and Lavazza, as well as ALDI-own-brand coffee, are some of the most popular brands for coffee beans, instant coffee, and capsules among coffee drinkers in Australia. In 2024, annual domestic coffee consumption totaled around 2.15 million 60-kilogram bags. Cappuccinos, lattes, and flat whites are the top three favorite coffee drinks among consumers in Australia, with cappuccinos the number one coffee across most Australian states. The leading reasons consumers drink coffee are for the taste and to wake up. Nonetheless, some Australians report consuming coffee to relax and unwind. Cafés: another casualty of inflation? The pandemic has changed consumer behavior in many ways across Australia, with coffee consumption no exception to this rule. From Sunday brunch to afternoon coffee dates, buying coffee at cafés is popular among Australians. When choosing which coffee shop to visit, the quality of coffee as well as affordability, are considered the most important coffee shop attributes among the country’s coffee drinkers. Nonetheless, cost of living pressures have led consumers to rethink their budgets, with many swapping takeout coffees for homemade brews created with their own machines. In the coming years, as the pool of café regulars shrinks due to rising coffee drink prices, coffee shops across the country could suffer as discretionary spending continues to fall.

As of December 2024, Brisbane was home to one of the highest concentrations of luxury hotels in Australia, with just under 50 percent of the hotels falling into the luxury category. Brisbane's hotel mix also includes a significant proportion of midscale and upper midscale options, accounting for about 25 percent of the city's total hotel landscape. Australia's domestic tourism trends Brisbane not only boasts an impressive array of luxury hotels, but ranks third in popularity among domestic overnight visitors across leading local destinations in Australia. Sydney and Melbourne lead as the most-visited destinations, with Brisbane following closely behind. This ranking aligns with spending patterns, as Melbourne and Sydney also dominated in terms of domestic overnight visitor expenditure in 2023, with tourists spending over 12 billion and 11.4 billion Australian dollars respectively in these cities. Expenditure in Brisbane came to just shy of 7.3 billion Australian dollars during the same period. Online booking preferences in Australia When travelers plan their stays in Brisbane and other Australian cities, online platforms play a crucial role in the booking process. Booking.com emerged as the preferred choice for hotel and private accommodation reservations among Australian consumers. In comparison, for those seeking package holiday bookings, Flight Centre takes the lead. These online booking trends highlight the importance of digital platforms in shaping the travel experiences of both domestic and international tourists and connecting visitors with diverse hotel offerings.
