Tourist Arrivals in Taiwan decreased to 651.08 Thousand in January from 903.62 Thousand in December of 2024. This dataset provides - Taiwan Tourist Arrivals - actual values, historical data, forecast, chart, statistics, economic calendar and news.
According to several surveys conducted among inbound travelers to Taiwan in 2020 and 2021, the amount of tourists' average daily expenditure decreased significantly in the second half of 2020 compared to the first quarter of the year, i.e. pre-pandemic, and grew only slightly in 2021. Between January and March 2020, tourists in Taiwan spent on average 152 U.S. dollars per day, 62 U.S. dollars of which covered their hotel bills. During the COVID-19 pandemic, tourists came to Taiwan after the easing of border controls in July 2020, however, their daily expenditure dropped to only 86 U.S. dollars on average. Hotel bills accounted for more than half of the daily spending at that time and remained nearly the same in 2021.
In the beginning of 2020, Taiwan's gourmet food and snacks were a major reason for around 73 percent of surveyed foreign tourists to visit the island. At the same time, shopping opportunities were a main motivation for approximately 30 percent of inbound tourists to come to Taiwan before the pandemic-related border control.
According to several surveys conducted among inbound travelers to Taiwan in 2020 and 2021, the distribution of tourists' average daily expenditure changed throughout the COVID-19 pandemic. Between January and March 2020, around 41 percent of daily expenses were hotel bills. However, during the pandemic, between July and Decemeber 2020, hotel bills took up nearly 54 percent of international tourists' average daily spending in Taiwan and decreased again to 47 percent in 2021. Meanwhile, the proportion spent on food, shopping, transportation, and entertainment dropped significantly in the second half of 2020 and remained low the following year.
