    Description

The Computer and Peripheral Equipment Manufacturing industry is highly competitive, with low selling prices and tight profitability. These low prices, as well as the release of new and enhanced products, computer software and applications, have helped to drive sales. However, computer and peripheral equipment manufacturing activity has largely shifted to countries with low-cost labour and more efficient supply chains. Revenue is estimated to decline at a compound annual rate of 2.3% over the five years through 2024-25 to £2.3 billion, largely due to falling unit prices and high import penetration. Manufacturers have had some respite in the form of government and business contracts, with some manufacturers operating in niche markets performing reasonably well. However, competition from abroad has intensified significantly. This has forced some unprofitable manufacturers out of the industry, while some have transferred production capacity to countries where manufacturing costs are lower than in the UK, like China and parts of Eastern Europe. The number of companies operating in the industry has consequently fallen. In 2024-25, revenue is expected to drop by 5.1% as poor economic conditions hold back sales to both households and businesses. The next five years promise opportunities for growth if UK manufacturers are able to take advantage of them. Ever-advancing technology in the fields of AI and quantum computing will demand improved hardware equipment to keep up. The government has committed billions of spending to help the UK keep at the cutting edge of technology, which should prop up future sales – especially as the public sector is one of the industry’s largest markets. Growth is likely to be supported by an increased emphasis on niche products, where manufacturers can compete with low-cost foreign competitors. Revenue is forecast to edge upwards at a compound annual rate of 2.4% over the five years through 2029-30 to £2.5 billion.

    Description

Global computer hardware manufacturers produce a diverse range of products, including desktop and laptop personal computers (PCs), computer peripherals and storage devices. Through the current period, competing trends have defined performance. Growing competition from tablet devices and mobile phones has eroded demand for traditional PCs worldwide, culminating in declining PC shipments despite robust demand during the pandemic. Price competition has also limited manufacturers' potential. Overall, revenue has contracted at an estimated CAGR of 3.2% through the current period to $227.6 billion, despite a 2.7% recovery in 2024, where profit reached 6.2%. Portability and weight are crucial development points for computer hardware manufacturers, especially as next-generation wireless technology matures in developed markets and internet access spreads worldwide. Demand for traditional desktop computers has dissipated at a time when notebook and desktop prices have converged. In particular, mobile devices have chipped away at the sales of desktops and notebooks, limiting growth opportunities. This trend has led to many recognized brands exiting the industry or shifting to smartphones, wearables and other handheld technologies in search of higher returns. Manufacturers will generate steady revenue through the outlook period, particularly as internet connectivity and global consumer sentiment rise. In particular, global shipment prices will stabilize, with higher incomes supporting increased demand for high-end computers in developed markets. Even so, many companies will prioritize investment for alternative mobile solutions. Similarly, price competition and rising demand for tablets will keep many smaller, less recognizable computer manufacturers from achieving stable growth. Also, many companies will continue to consolidate, acquiring smaller, innovative brands; others will prioritize partnerships and joint ventures with technology and semiconductor companies. Overall, revenue will rebound at an expected CAGR of 0.6% to 234.0 billion through the outlook period, where profit will reach 6.3%.

    Description

Operators in the Computer and Computer Peripheral Wholesaling industry have benefited from the rapid uptake of technology among households, businesses and government organisations in the wake of the COVID-19 outbreak. Government-mandated lockdowns over the three years through 2021-22 skyrocketed working-from-home and learning online measures, increasing demand for computers and affiliated equipment. Strict social distancing directives and cautious behaviour in response to the pandemic fuelled demand for at-home entertainment products, like gaming consoles, at the retail level. However, weakening economic conditions over the two years through 2023-24, and uncertainty during the pandemic, has lengthened the replacement cycle of personal computer hardware for many businesses, constraining revenue. Overall, industry revenue is expected to decline at an annualised 0.4% over the five years through 2023-24, to $24.6 billion. High inflation and rising interest rates are set to reduce spending by consumers, contributing to an anticipated 1.5% fall in revenue in 2023-24. Industry wholesalers have faced intense pressures from internal competition, substitute products and wholesale bypass over the past five years. Although the average manufacturing price of computers has risen over the period, wholesalers have struggled to pass on these cost increases to consumers due to strong price competition. Logistical issues and the global chip shortage caused by the pandemic have increased purchase costs. These trends, coupled with the rising popularity of smartphones – which weighs down demand for computers – have squeezed industry profit margins over the past five years. However, wholesalers have increasingly invested in automated technologies to reduce wage costs, limiting profit margin declines. Industry revenue growth is projected to recover over the next five years. Purchases of replacements for existing hardware, which were delayed, and new product releases associated with AI technology are set to spur sales to business clients. Intensifying price competition and wholesale bypass’s continued rise will likely force small, unviable wholesalers to leave the market, contributing to a fall in enterprise numbers over the next five years. Overall, industry revenue is forecast to rise at an annualised 2.5% over the five years through 2028-29, to reach $27.9 billion.

    Description

In the last five years, the German market for IT devices and accessories has changed fundamentally. The increasing prevalence of mobile devices is reflected in the growing number of laptops and tablets in private households, while desktop computers are becoming less important. This trend was made particularly clear by the market exit of leading manufacturer Fujitsu in 2020, which led to a drastic decline in industry sales and permanently changed the market structure. As a result, the remaining German manufacturers shifted their focus to specialised niches such as ATMs, terminals and customised IT solutions in order to secure their profit margins and differentiate themselves from international competition. This has enabled some companies to strengthen their earning power, particularly in less globalised market segments. Between 2020 and 2025, the industry's turnover increased by an average of 1.1% per year to 3.4 billion euros.IBISWorld expects industry turnover to fall by 3.1% in the current year compared to the previous year. The industry is currently dominated by a small number of highly specialised companies with a clear product focus, resulting in high barriers to market entry. Their long-standing customer relationships, sophisticated production processes and certified quality standards make it considerably more difficult for new market players to enter the market. The trend towards flexible, powerful and affordable solutions is continuing, particularly through convertibles and specialised devices for education and industry. While Asian providers are increasingly gaining market share in the low-price segment, German manufacturers are focusing on customised products and niche markets as well as strategic partnerships, particularly with public institutions, in order to successfully counter ongoing competitive pressure and falling margins. IBISWorld expects the industry's turnover to fall by an average of 1% per year to 3.2 billion euros by 2030. In the coming years, a significant expansion of production capacities for IT equipment and accessories in Germany remains unlikely due to high costs and strong international competition. Market growth will be driven primarily by innovative niche solutions, after-sales services and investments in research and development. Growth potential arises in particular from trends such as the Internet of Things, rising data volumes and the AI boom, which are increasing demand for specialised server and storage devices as well as IoT-capable hardware solutions. The issue of cyber security is also becoming increasingly important, which is why manufacturers are focussing on secure, automation-capable systems and cooperation with IT security experts. Sustainability and technical innovations are becoming differentiating features in international competition.

    Description

The European computer and peripheral equipment market is dominated by imports, creating stiff competition for local manufacturers. Asian countries such as China, Taiwan and South Korea, which are characterised by cost-efficient manufacturing and high production capacities, dominate sales. In response, manufacturers in countries such as Germany, the UK and France have moved away from the mass production of electronics to serve niche markets that value innovation and customisation. For example, German companies are focusing on high-performance industrial computers, while some British companies are developing computers with sophisticated encryption technologies. At the same time, some large companies, including Dell, HP, Lenovo and Acer, have production facilities in Hungary and Czechia. Despite the higher costs compared to production in Asia, these European locations help companies respond to the requirements of the European market. Over the five years through 2024, revenue is expected to dip at a compound annual rate of 1.1% to €41.2 billion. Computer manufacturers struggled in the aftermath of the COVID-19 outbreak, which brought about huge supply chain disruption, hitting companies that rely on components made in Asia hard. In the current year, computer manufacturers are being challenged by high inflation and shaky economic conditions across Europe, which is causing consumers and companies to think twice before spending on new tech. As a result, revenue is declining by 2.5% in 2024. Computer manufacturing revenue growth in Europe will likely by constrained by high labour costs, a focus on software rather than hardware and market saturation. To counteract declining demand for PCs created by more widespread smartphone use, European computer manufacturers might look to focus on niche markets that require high computing power, such as gaming and content creation, and target those consumers seeking both portability and functionality with innovative products, such as convertible laptops. Over the five years through 2029, revenue is expected to rise at a compound annual rate of 3.9% to €50.0 billion.
