    Description

The United States Census Bureau publishes geographic units used for tabulation of the 2020 Census population data in the 2020 TIGER/Line Shapefile. The geographic units, which remain constant throughout the decade, include counties, census tracts, block groups, and blocks. Fields have been added so data formatted or published by the council can be joined to the shapefile for analysis. Each Shapefile (.shp) is in a compressed file (.zip) format. Blocks.zip - Census Blocks BlockGroups.zip - Block Groups Tracts.zip - Census Tracts Counties.zip - Counties Cities.zip - Census Places (Cities) CDPs.zip - Census Designated Places Each 'Pop' file contains the 2020 Census population for the corresponding geographic level. Description

This resource is a member of a series. The TIGER/Line shapefiles and related database files (.dbf) are an extract of selected geographic and cartographic information from the U.S. Census Bureau's Master Address File / Topologically Integrated Geographic Encoding and Referencing (MAF/TIGER) Database (MTDB). The MTDB represents a seamless national file with no overlaps or gaps between parts, however, each TIGER/Line shapefile is designed to stand alone as an independent data set, or they can be combined to cover the entire nation. Census Blocks are statistical areas bounded on all sides by visible features, such as streets, roads, streams, and railroad tracks, and/or by nonvisible boundaries such as city, town, township, and county limits, and short line-of-sight extensions of streets and roads. Census blocks are relatively small in area; for example, a block in a city bounded by streets. However, census blocks in remote areas are often large and irregular and may even be many square miles in area. A common misunderstanding is that data users think census blocks are used geographically to build all other census geographic areas, rather all other census geographic areas are updated and then used as the primary constraints, along with roads and water features, to delineate the tabulation blocks. As a result, all 2020 Census blocks nest within every other 2020 Census geographic area, so that Census Bureau statistical data can be tabulated at the block level and aggregated up to the appropriate geographic areas. Census blocks cover all territory in the United States, Puerto Rico, and the Island Areas (American Samoa, Guam, the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands, and the U.S. Virgin Islands). Blocks are the smallest geographic areas for which the Census Bureau publishes data from the decennial census. A block may consist of one or more faces.

The MTDB represents a seamless national file with no overlaps or gaps between parts, however, each TIGER/Line shapefile is designed to stand alone as an independent data set, or they can be combined to cover the entire nation. Census tracts are small, relatively permanent statistical subdivisions of a county or equivalent entity, and were defined by local participants as part of the 2020 Census Participant Statistical Areas Program. The Census Bureau delineated the census tracts in situations where no local participant existed or where all the potential participants declined to participate. The primary purpose of census tracts is to provide a stable set of geographic units for the presentation of census data and comparison back to previous decennial censuses. Census tracts generally have a population size between 1,200 and 8,000 people, with an optimum size of 4,000 people. When first delineated, census tracts were designed to be homogeneous with respect to population characteristics, economic status, and living conditions. The spatial size of census tracts varies widely depending on the density of settlement. Physical changes in street patterns caused by highway construction, new development, and so forth, may require boundary revisions. In addition, census tracts occasionally are split due to population growth, or combined as a result of substantial population decline. Census tract boundaries generally follow visible and identifiable features. They may follow legal boundaries such as minor civil division (MCD) or incorporated place boundaries in some States and situations to allow for census tract-to-governmental unit relationships where the governmental boundaries tend to remain unchanged between censuses. State and county boundaries always are census tract boundaries in the standard census geographic hierarchy. In a few rare instances, a census tract may consist of noncontiguous areas. These noncontiguous areas may occur where the census tracts are coextensive with all or parts of legal entities that are themselves noncontiguous. For the 2010 Census, the census tract code range of 9400 through 9499 was enforced for census tracts that include a majority American Indian population according to Census 2000 data and/or their area was primarily covered by federally recognized American Indian reservations and/or off-reservation trust lands; the code range 9800 through 9899 was enforced for those census tracts that contained little or no population and represented a relatively large special land use area such as a National Park, military installation, or a business/industrial park; and the code range 9900 through 9998 was enforced for those census tracts that contained only water area, no land area.

    Description

A census tract is a geographic area defined by the U.S. Census Bureau for the purpose of collecting and analyzing demographic data. Typically, a census tract contains a population of about 1,200 to 8,000 people and is designed to reflect homogenous social and economic characteristics. Tracts are used in various statistical analyses and are updated every ten years with the decennial census, allowing for a detailed understanding of population trends, housing, and economic conditions within specific communities. These files do not include demographic data, but they contain geographic entity codes that can be linked to the Census Bureau’s demographic data, available on https://data.census.gov. Terms of Use This product is for informational purposes and may not have been prepared for or be suitable for legal, engineering, or surveying purposes. It does not represent an on-the-ground survey and represents only the approximate relative location of property boundaries. Description
    About this dataset

    Context

The dataset tabulates the Texas population over the last 20 plus years. It lists the population for each year, along with the year on year change in population, as well as the change in percentage terms for each year. The dataset can be utilized to understand the population change of Texas across the last two decades. For example, using this dataset, we can identify if the population is declining or increasing. If there is a change, when the population peaked, or if it is still growing and has not reached its peak. We can also compare the trend with the overall trend of United States population over the same period of time.

    Key observations

In 2024, the population of Texas was 31.29 million, a 1.83% increase year-by-year from 2023. Previously, in 2023, Texas population was 30.73 million, an increase of 2.04% compared to a population of 30.11 million in 2022. Over the last 20 plus years, between 2000 and 2024, population of Texas increased by 10.35 million. In this period, the peak population was 31.29 million in the year 2024. The numbers suggest that the population has not reached its peak yet and is showing a trend of further growth. Source: U.S. Census Bureau Population Estimates Program (PEP).

A census tract is a geographic region defined for the purpose of taking a census.Usually these coincide with the limits of cities, townsor other administrative areas and several tracts commonly exist within a county. In unincorporated areasof the United States these are often arbitrary, except for coinciding with political lines. In the United States, census tracts are subdivided into block groupsand census blocks. According to the U.S. Census Bureau: Census tracts are designed to be relatively homogeneous units with respect to population characteristics, economic status, and living conditions, census tracts average about 4,000 inhabitants.
