Abstract Violence against LGBT people has always been present in our society. Brazil is the country with the highest number of lethal crimes against LGBT people in the world. The aim of this study was to describe the characteristics of homicides of LGBT people in Brazil using spatial analysis. The LGBT homicide rate was used to facilitate the visualization of the geographical distribution of homicides. Public thoroughfares and the victim’s home were the most common places of occurrence. The most commonly used methods for killing male homosexuals and transgender people were cold weapons and firearms, respectively; however, homicides frequently involved beatings, suffocation, and other cruelties. The large majority of victims were aged between 20 and 49 years and typically white or brown. The North, Northeast and Central-West regions, precisely the regions with the lowest HDI, presented LGBT homicide rates above the national rate. LGBT homicides are typically hate crimes and constitute a serious public health problem because they affect young people, particularly transgender people. This problem needs to be addressed by the government, starting with the criminalization of homophobia and the subsequent formulation of public policies to reduce hate crimes and promote respect for diversity.

We aim to replicate findings resulting from the sexually antagonistic gene hypothesis (SAGH) of male homosexuality. According to this hypothesis, homosexuality in men is partly heritable and at least one genetic locus is X-linked, the relevant allele(s) residing on the X-chromosome and being transmitted to homosexual men from their mothers. This allele or these alleles should also increase fecundity of carrier women, which is in fact a mechanism considered to be responsible for pertaining of male homosexuality in human population. We will test this hypothesis as well as the so called maternal immune hypothesis (MIH), that brings prenatal mechanisms in action. The mother is presumed to be immunized by pregnancies with male fetuses, develops an immune response which raises the probability that her subsequent sons will be gay. Gay men, on average, should have more older brothers, which has actually been demonstrated by a body of research.
The possibility that the relevant allele(s) reside(s) on autosomes cannot be excluded. If this is so, it could possibly be reflected in an elevated fecundity not only in female maternal relatives of homosexual men, but also in other classes of relatives.
We will try to replicate previous findings of other researchers on a sample of Czech homosexual and heterosexual men and women. We will compare two methods of data collection - the questionnaires distributed either on-line or physically in field. In the questionnaire, we are going to gather information about the number of our participants' relatives and their sexual orientation. Participants will be sampled using targeted sampling method.

As bisexual individuals in the United States (U.S.) face significant health disparities, researchers have posited that these differences may be fueled, at least in part, by negative attitudes, prejudice, stigma, and discrimination toward bisexual individuals from heterosexual and gay/lesbian individuals. Previous studies of individual and social attitudes toward bisexual men and women have been conducted almost exclusively with convenience samples, with limited generalizability to the broader U.S. population. Our study provides an assessment of attitudes toward bisexual men and women among a nationally representative sample of heterosexual, gay, lesbian, and “other”-identified adults in the U.S. Data were collected from the 2015 National Survey of Sexual Health and Behavior (NSSHB), via an online questionnaire with a probability sample of adults (18 and over) from throughout the U.S. We included two modified 5-item versions of the Bisexualities: Indiana Attitudes Scale (BIAS), validated sub-scales that were developed to measure attitudes toward bisexual men and women. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, gamma regression, and paired t-tests. Gender, sexual identity, age, race/ethnicity, income, and educational attainment were all significantly associated with participants' attitudes toward bisexual individuals. In terms of responses to individual scale items, participants were most likely to “neither agree nor disagree” with attitudinal statements. Across sexual identities, self-identified "other" participants reported the most positive attitudes, while heterosexual male participants reported the least positive attitudes. Overall, attitudes toward bisexual men were significantly less positive than toward bisexual women across identities. As in previous research on convenience samples, we found a wide range of demographic characteristics were related with attitudes toward bisexual individuals in our nationally-representative study of heterosexual, gay/lesbian, and "other"-identified adults in the U.S. Additionally, as in previous studies, gender emerged as a significant characteristic; female participants’ attitudes were more positive than male participants’ attitudes, and all participants’ attitudes were generally more positive toward bisexual women than bisexual men. While population data suggest a marked shift in more positive attitudes toward gay men and lesbian women in the general population of the U.S., the largest proportions of participants in our study reported a relative lack of agreement or disagreement with the affective-evaluative statements in the BIAS scales. Findings document the absence of positive attitudes toward bisexual individuals among the general population of adults in the U.S. Our findings highlight the need for developing intervention approaches to promote more positive attitudes toward bisexual individuals, targeted toward not only heterosexual and but also gay/lesbian individuals and communities.

Companies increasingly seek to use gay protagonists in audio-visual commercials to attract a new affluent target group. There is also growing demand for the diversity present in society to be reflected in media formats such as advertising. Studies have shown, however, that heterosexual consumers (especially men), who may be part of the company's loyal consumer base, tend to react negatively to gay-themed advertising campaigns. Searching for an instrument to mitigate this unwanted effect, the present study investigated whether carefully selected background music can shape the perceived gender of gay male advertising protagonists. In a 2 × 2 between-subjects online experiment (musical connotation × gender of the participant), 218 heterosexual participants watched a commercial promoting engagement rings that featured gay male protagonists, scored with feminine- or masculine-connoted background music. As expected, women generally reacted more positively than men to the advertising. Men exposed to the masculine-connoted background music rated the promoted brand more positively, and masculine music also enhanced (at least in the short term) these men's acceptance of gay men in general (low and medium effect sizes) more than was the case for feminine background music. Carefully selected background music affecting the perceived gender of gay male advertising protagonists may prevent negative reactions from heterosexual audiences and, therefore, motivate companies to use gay protagonists in television commercials on a more regular basis.

IntroductionAmong US men, oropharyngeal cancer (cancer of the back of the mouth and throat) is the 8th most common cancer. If detected early, human papillomavirus (HPV)-16-associated oropharyngeal cancer has a high 5-year survival rate. Risk factors such as high numbers of oral sex partners, disparities in smoking and drinking, and low rates of HPV vaccination may put gay and bisexual men at even higher risk for oropharyngeal cancer.MethodsWe recruited 21 healthcare providers in Minneapolis-St. Paul, Minnesota and Houston, Texas to participate in semi-structured interviews. Nurses, physician assistants, dental hygienists, and dentists were asked about their clinical experiences serving gay and bisexual men and opinions on potential interventions for the early detection of oropharyngeal cancer.ResultsProviders typically did not tailor health screenings and examinations for gay and bisexual men. Participants lacked confidence in their ability to effectively implement routine screening for oropharyngeal cancer. The extent to which oropharyngeal cancer screening was incorporated into clinical practice varied by specialty, and practices necessary to detect it were scattered across clinical environments. HIV- and LGBTQ-focused healthcare providers were more aware of HPV-associated oropharyngeal cancer in gay and bisexual men, and appeared readier to act and lead on this issue.DiscussionFurther studies should (1) evaluate protocols for oropharyngeal cancer detection; (2) identify and assess the acceptability of screening in the community; and (3) study how to best close gaps in health services for gay and bisexual men which might contribute to low early detection rates of oropharyngeal cancer.

We show that faces contain much more information about sexual orientation than can be perceived and interpreted by the human brain. We used deep neural networks to extract features from 35,326 facial images. These features were entered into a logistic regression aimed at classifying sexual orientation. Given a single facial image, a classifier could correctly distinguish between gay and heterosexual men in 81% of cases, and in 74% of cases for women. Human judges achieved much lower accuracy: 61% for men and 54% for women. The accuracy of the algorithm increased to 91% and 83%, respectively, given five facial images per person. Facial features employed by the classifier included both fixed (e.g., nose shape) and transient facial features (e.g., grooming style). Consistent with the prenatal hormone theory of sexual orientation, gay men and women tended to have gender-atypical facial morphology, expression, and grooming styles. Prediction models aimed at gender alone allowed for detecting gay males with 57% accuracy and gay females with 58% accuracy. Those findings advance our understanding of the origins of sexual orientation and the limits of human perception. Additionally, given that companies and governments are increasingly using computer vision algorithms to detect people’s intimate traits, our findings expose a threat to the privacy and safety of gay men and women.
The data contain the structured parts of a reader survey conducted by the weekly supplement NYT of the daily newspaper Helsingin Sanomat. The survey studied Finnish homosexual behaviour and attitudes towards homosexuality. Respondents' sexual behaviour and experiences were investigated with several close-ended questions: the extent of homosexual attraction or experience, main reasons for contacting persons of the same sex, age when started sex life, how often has sex and how often would like to have sex. The development of respondents' sexual identity was charted. Respondents were also asked what they enjoyed most in sexual activities, how they would define homosexuality and whether their friends, relatives, fellow workers, neighbours etc. were aware of their sexuality. They were asked whether they had experienced pressure from their environment because of their sexual identity (e.g. subjected to jokes, discrimination in the workplace). There were 1885 respondents. One third of the respondents were young people aged 20-30. One third were students and the rest represented a wide variety of occupations and employment sectors. Half of the respondents lived in the metropolitan area; the majority of other respondents also lived in cities. Background variables included sex, age, occupation, marital status and sexual orientation (bisexual, heterosexual, homosexual, lesbian).
