The number of domestic leisure trips in the U.S. amounted to 1.88 billion in 2022. As estimated, domestic leisure travels in the U.S. dropped to 1.4 billion in 2020. The number of business trips, by comparison, is forecast to reach 480 million that same year.

Most visited tourist attractions - additional information

Attracting just short of 40 million visitors per year, the Las Vegas Strip was the most visited tourist attraction in the world as of April 2014, closely followed by Times Square in New York City with 39.2 million. The top nine tourist attractions, and 28 out of the top 50, were located in the United States. With so much to see and do in their own country, it is not surprising that many U.S. travelers choose to take domestic trips over international ones – in 2014, 84 percent of people taking trips were traveling domestically, compared to just 16 percent traveling abroad.

The Las Vegas Strip, situated in Las Vegas in the state of Nevada, is well-known for its gambling and casino scene, nightlife, restaurants and shopping. The city is packed with resorts offering a variety of entertainment for visitors. Nevada’s most famous industry, casino gaming, was expected to generate around 13 billion U.S. dollars in 2015. Las Vegas is also a leader in the U.S. meetings and conventions industry, hosting more than 22 thousand conventions in 2013.

Outside of the U.S., the most visited tourist attraction was the Forbidden City in Beijing, receiving more than 15 million visitors annually. Built in the early fifteenth century, the Forbidden City was home to Emperors and the center of Chinese government from the Ming dynasty until the end of the Qing dynasty in 1912. The most visited tourist attraction in Europe was the Grand Bazaar in Istanbul, Turkey. The ancient market received 15 million visitors in 2014, although only ranked 11th worldwide.

    Description

The New York Times is releasing a series of data files with cumulative counts of coronavirus cases in the United States, at the state and county level, over time. We are compiling this time series data from state and local governments and health departments in an attempt to provide a complete record of the ongoing outbreak.

Since late January, The Times has tracked cases of coronavirus in real time as they were identified after testing. Because of the widespread shortage of testing, however, the data is necessarily limited in the picture it presents of the outbreak.

We have used this data to power our maps and reporting tracking the outbreak, and it is now being made available to the public in response to requests from researchers, scientists and government officials who would like access to the data to better understand the outbreak.

The data begins with the first reported coronavirus case in Washington State on Jan. 21, 2020. We will publish regular updates to the data in this repository.

    Description

From 2010 to 2019, the total trip expenditure of international tourists visiting Australia had increased steadily. Total trip expenditure fell from over 44 billion Australian dollars in 2019 to an all-time low of around 1.2 billion in 2021. This significant change in an otherwise upward trend was largely due to global travel restrictions. However, international visitor trip expenditure rebounded in the 2024 financial year, exceeding pre-pandemic levels at over 47 billion Australian dollars, indicating a strong recovery from the impact of the pandemic. International visitors to Australia: where are they traveling from? Among the top international source markets of visitors to Australia, New Zealand residents led the way, with over 1.2 million visitors to Australia in the year ending June 2024, followed closely by tourists from China at nearly 800,000. The majority of international travelers came for vacations or to visit family and friends, with approximately three million holiday-makers that year. Notably, holiday-makers contributed the highest trip expenditure, at around 16.7 billion Australian dollars. Regional preferences and economic impact of international tourism New South Wales emerged as the most popular destination of international visitors by state, welcoming over 3.7 million international travelers in the year ended June 2024. This state alone accounted for more than a third of all international visitor nights across Australia. Tourists from China were the biggest spenders among international arrival groups to Australia in 2024, contributing about nine billion Australian dollars to the economy, followed by visitors from the United States, who spent just over 4.5 billion.
