Of the leading national newspapers in the United Kingdom in 2019, The Times was the only one to have a higher reach in print than any online version.
Times Newspapers
The Sunday Times and The Times are both owned by Times Newspapers Ltd and based in London. The Sunday Times is published once a week and is the second most successful Sunday newspaper in the UK. The Times is published daily from Monday to Saturday.

TwitterIn 2024, the average weekday print circulation of The New York Times was approximately ******* copies, less than half the figure recorded in 2014. In that year, the company ceased publishing its figures based on weekday circulation for print, online, and other digital platforms, and published only its print circulation. The New York Times The New York Times was founded in 1851 and has been a household name in the United States for decades. The newspaper has adapted well to changes in the media industry, and between the final quarters of 2014 and 2020, paid subscribers to The New York Times’ digital only news product increased from *** thousand to over ************. The New York Times is also one of the world’s leading podcast publishers, with unique streams and downloads of the company’s podcasts reaching tens and sometimes even hundreds of millions per month. Popularity and reliability As one of the most popular news websites in the United States, the NYT has been known to achieve ** million unique monthly visitors, outperforming the likes of NBC News, The Washington Post, and The Guardian. That said, like many news publications, The New York Times has been the subject of controversy over the years. From accusations of liberal bias to its hiring practices, the newspaper has faced challenges regarding not only its published content but also its employees. In spite of this, just ** percent of respondents to a survey seriously doubted the credibility of The New York Times, with most finding the publication to be a reliable source.

TwitterThe New York Times had **** million digital subscribers as of February 2025, making the publication the global leader in this regard, followed by Substack and The Wall Street Journal with **** million and *** million online news subscribers respectively. Digital subscriptions – the future for news publishers? Subscriptions were cited as the most important digital revenue stream for publishers worldwide in every year from 2021 to 2023, ahead of advertising. As subscriptions have increased, customer retention has also become a growing concern, and according to the aforementioned subscriber losses experienced by The Washington Post, is a well-founded one. Retaining paying members is crucial to achieve growth, and publishers must keep abreast of their users’ needs and industry trends in order to do this. The challenge to achieve sign-ups Converting readers to becoming paying subscribers to news products is challenging. Even video streaming services are experiencing churn. A 2022 survey revealed that ** percent of U.S. subscribers aged 18 to 34 years old canceled between *** and five subscriptions in the three months running up to the survey. If consumers are sacrificing more popular entertainment subscriptions to save money, news subscriptions could also suffer. In fact, ** percent of U.S. subscribers canceled their news subscription* in the last year, a figure which could grow higher as the recession worsens and trust continues to fall.

TwitterThere is no denying that the way people consume newspapers and magazines has changed. As of 2020, more than two thirds of individuals in Great Britain were either reading or downloading online news, newspapers or magazines. This was more than three times the share of online readers as compared to 2007. The share of UK online readers was higher than the European Union (EU 28) average. As of February 2019, BBC News online had the highest share of readers in the UK, with the Guardian and Mail Online coming in as second and third choice.
How do people like their news?
According to an Ofcom study, both television and the internet were more likely to be a source of news over newspapers across all UK countries. In fact, in Northern Ireland, individuals were more likely to receive news via word of mouth rather than through a physical newspaper or printed magazine.
Social media and news
In some European countries, approximately half of news consumers used Facebook as a source of news, while in the UK, it was approximately one quarter of news consumers. In the UK, Facebook was the leading social media network as a source for news, followed by Twitter and YouTube.

TwitterAs of June 2024, The Wall Street Journal had over 4.3 million paying subscribers. The majority were online-only subscribers, whilst print readers continued to fall. The Wall Street Journal The Wall Street Journal is a well-respected international newspaper that focuses on business, economics, and politics. The publication is generally seen as a trustworthy source of news and information, with about twice as many people deeming it trustworthy as those that consider it untrustworthy. While measures of trustworthiness can suffer from bias associated with political leanings, accuracy is generally more easily verifiable and thus arguably a better metric for assessing publications of any type. In terms of accuracy, the Wall Street journal ranks extremely high with only around ten percent of people finding it to be inaccurate. Newspaper circulation The Wall Street Journal, as well as The NYTimes, have both successfully managed to cater to both print and digitally focused consumers by becoming multiplatform publications. This is an undoubtedly clever (and perhaps necessary) move in an era where print popularity has waned significantly, as digital readership takes over. The accessibility of smartphone news apps and online news publications have made it difficult for physical newspapers to compete, and although the majority of newspaper circulation revenue still comes from print offerings, companies that wish to continue in the market have been forced to adapt their business strategies to accommodate online-only readers.

TwitterThe circulation figures for daily newspapers in the United States reveal that USA Today distributed the most papers as of January 2019, with a daily circulation of over **** million. Back in September 2017, The Wall Street Journal ranked first, with circulation figures far outperforming The New York Times, Chicago Tribune and New York Post. Although the 2019 data shows that all daily newspapers in the top ten ranking saw a decrease in circulation since 2017, the Chicago Tribune was hit the hardest. Despite making the top ten list in both years, the paper’s daily circulation decreased by almost *** thousand.
The decline of newspaper circulation
It is no secret that print is floundering whilst at the same time digital media is flourishing. However, the impact of falling circulation figures on newspapers has an effect on advertising revenue, as circulation is one of the metrics used to determine and set advertising rates. In 2017, the estimated revenue of newspaper publishers in the United States was almost seven billion dollars lower than in 2010, despite several years of reasonably consistent revenue in terms of subscription and sales.
Similarly, print newspaper publishing revenue in the U.S. dropped by almost *** million dollars in seven years, whilst revenue for online newspapers showed positive growth.

TwitterRadio Times was the leading general magazine title in terms of overall reach in the United Kingdom from April 2019 to 2020. The radio and television guide had a combined online and print reach of around 11.8 million individuals, while Time Out magazine (timeout.com) reached approximately 2.9 million readers and viewers per month.
UK magazines are no longer flying off the shelves The UK sales volume of printed magazines plummeted from 820 million magazines in 2011 to just below 374 million copies sold in 2018. In line with global industry trends, revenues from print magazine sales in the UK also dropped from over one billion British pounds to roughly 634 million GBP during the past decade, a development fueled by the prevalence of online news and entertainment channels. As audiences started to shift from print media to online platforms, the sales volume of the UK digital magazine market has recently increased by almost 50 percent.
Magazines are moving online In order to combat readership loss and stay relevant in today’s digitalized world, many of the UK’s most popular magazine brands have moved online. In 2020, the share of individuals reading or downloading online news, newspapers, and magazines in the UK reached a record 70 percent, and according to the latest data, smartphones have become the leading platform for magazine consumption across the UK. Indicative of this ongoing shift towards mobile media consumption, Radio Times, Time Out, and many other general magazine brands had a higher audience reach on smartphones than on tablets, desktop, and print editions combined in 2020.

TwitterSocial media was by far the most popular news platform among 18 to 34-year-olds in the United States, with 47 percent of respondents to a survey held in August 2022 saying that they used social networks for news on a daily basis. By comparison, adults over 65 years old mostly used network news to keep up to date.
The decline of newspapers In the past, the reasons to regularly go out and purchase a print newspaper were many. Used not only for news but also apartment hunting, entertainment, and job searches (among other things), newspapers once served multiple purposes. This is no longer the case, with first television and then the internet taking care of consumer needs once covered by printed papers. Indeed, the paid circulation of daily weekday newspapers in the United States has fallen dramatically since the 1980s with no sign of future improvement.
News consumption habits
A survey on news consumption by gender found that 50 percent of women use either online-only news sites or social media for news each day, and 51 percent of male respondents said the same. Social media was by far the most used daily news platform among U.S. Millennials, and the same was true of Gen Z. One appeal of online news is that it often comes at no cost to the consumer. Paying for news found via digital outlets is not yet commonplace in the United States, with only 21 percent of U.S. consumers responding to a study held in early 2021 reporting having paid for online news content in the last year.

TwitterThere were 11.06 million paid digital subscribers to The New York Times Company in the first quarter of 2025, most of which were bundle and multiproduct subscribers. These subscribers pay for bundle subscriptions or a standalone online-only subscription to two or more of The NYT's products, and at last count the number of subscribers amounted to over 5.7 million.

It was the first newspaper in the UK to write articles targeted at women. As of April 2019, the Daily Mail had a circulation of almost 1.2 million newspapers, the second highest in the United Kingdom.
Newspaper consumption in the UK
There has been a decrease in newspaper consumption expenditure in the United Kingdom over recent years. UK households purchased roughly 3.3 million British pounds worth of newspapers in 2018, compared to 4.5 million pounds in 2013. Based on a survey in 2018, 29 percent of adults in Great Britain that regularly access news thought that the quality of the news nowadays is slightly worse than it was five years ago.

TwitterIn China, traditional media have seen a decline as digital platforms rise in popularity. As of the third quarter of 2024, the average daily online time rose to **** hours and ** minutes in the country, *** minutes more than the survey result from a year ago. Daily TV and press media usage were down by ** minutes and ** minutes respectively. The multi-functionality of social media Social media has significantly contributed to this downward trend. The convenience, immediacy, and engagement offered by social media have become preferred sources of information and entertainment, resulting in reduced viewership for television and diminished readership for press media. Audio streaming on the rise On the other hand, music streaming and podcasts have gained traction with services like KuGou Music and Ximalaya catering to the demand for on-the-go, diverse audio content. These shifts are largely due to the rapid adoption of smartphones, improved internet infrastructure, and the increasing desire for immediate, tailored content.

TwitterIn 2024, The New York Times Company generated over 506 million U.S. dollars in advertising revenue, marking a small increase from the previous year but also a clear improvement from the lower results in 2020 and 2021. Meanwhile, The NYT’s subscription revenue continued to grow and surpassed 1.6 billion U.S. dollars for the first time in 2023. The New York Times print circulation According to the company’s financial reports, the average paid weekday print circulation of The New York Times remained above 340 thousand in 2021. A separate report ranked The NYT among the leading newspapers in the United States in terms of weekday print circulation, with more than double that of The Los Angeles Times or The Washington Post. Whilst it is true that The NYT still has considerably more print copies in circulation than other papers, the figures are not what they once were. Back in 2000, The New York Times had an average weekday print circulation of over 1.1 million, and even in 2015, the number was still above 600 thousand. Further annual decreases can be expected as online news content, paid or otherwise, now takes precedence over printed publications. Digital readership The New York Times’ digital subscribers hit the five million mark in the final quarter of 2020, up by around 1,500 from the end of 2019. The company did, however, see a drop in its satisfaction rating between 2019 and 2020. Consumer satisfaction with online news brands generally fell in that time period, but The NYT saw the biggest decrease, losing six points year over year.

Sunday People suffered a decline of almost ** percent, and Daily Star, Daily Record, and Daily Mirror saw a decrease of ** percent. With the price of newspapers on the up and the cost-of-living crisis ongoing, it seems unrealistic to expect British consumers to invest in newspapers, and circulation is unlikely to improve. But will consumers invest in online subscriptions? Digital news subscriptions are also costly A number of news subscriptions available to UK news consumers cost in excess of *** British pounds per year, and most were around the 100 GBP mark. TwitterThe average daily time spent with digital media in the United States is expected to increase from *** minutes (seven hours and 19 minutes) in 2022 to close to ***** hours in 2025. Higher online media consumption in 2020 was partially attributed to the coronavirus outbreak. Impact of COVID-19 on media consumption In-home media consumption grew sharply in March 2020 in the first stages of the COVID-19 pandemic. More than ** percent of U.S. respondents reported spending more time watching shows and films on streaming services, and ** percent were reading books or listening to audiobooks more than usual. Despite predictions that this spike in media usage would fall after the initial implementation of shelter-in-place orders, consumers also continued spending more time with media in the summer of 2020. The same survey, held in July that year, also asked participants about their plans to continue with their increased media consumption after the pandemic has run its course. This garnered different responses, with only a handful of U.S. adults planning to carry on investing more time in most media activities. Again though, watching movies and shows on streaming platforms and reading or listening to books were the most popular options.
