    Although the American Community Survey (ACS) produces population, demographic and housing unit estimates, the decennial census is the official source of population totals for April 1st of each decennial year. In between censuses, the Census Bureau's Population Estimates Program produces and disseminates the official estimates of the population for the nation, states, counties, cities, and towns and estimates of housing units and the group quarters population for states and counties..Information about the American Community Survey (ACS) can be found on the ACS website.     Description
    The 2021 UK Census was the 23rd official census of the United Kingdom. The UK Census is generally conducted once every 10 years, and the 2021 censuses of England, Wales, and Northern Ireland took place on 21 March 2021. In Scotland, the decision was made to move the census to March 2022 because of the impact of the coronavirus pandemic. The censuses were administered by the Office for National Statistics (ONS), the Northern Ireland Statistics and Research Agency (NISRA) and National Records of Scotland (NRS), respectively. In England and Wales, Census 2021 was the first census with a digital-first design, encouraging participants to respond online rather than on a paper questionnaire.

    Topics covered in the 2021 UK Census included:

    The 2021 Census: Safeguarded Individual Microdata Sample at Grouped Local Authority Level dataset consists of a random sample of 5% of person records from the 2021 Census. It includes records for 3,021,611 persons. These data cover England and Wales only. The lowest level of geography is grouped local authority. This means groups of local authorities or single local authorities where the population reaches at least 120,000 persons. The dataset contains 87 variables and a low level of detail.

    Census Microdata

    Microdata are small samples of individual records from a single census from which identifying information have been removed. They contain a range of individual and household characteristics and can be used to carry out analysis not possible from standard census outputs, such as:

    • creating tables using bespoke variable combinations
    • investigating specific combinations of variables or categories in a high level of detail
    • conducting non-tabular statistical analyses on record-level data.

    The microdata samples are designed to protect the confidentiality of individuals and households. This is done by applying access controls and removing information that might directly identify a person, such as names, addresses and date of birth. Record swapping is applied to the census data used to create the microdata samples. This is a statistical disclosure control (SDC) method, which makes very small changes to the data to prevent the identification of individuals. The microdata samples use further SDC methods, such as collapsing variables and restricting detail. The samples also include records that have been edited to prevent inconsistent data and contain imputed persons, households, and data values. To protect confidentiality, imputation flags are not included in any 2021 Census microdata sample.

    This dataset provides Census 2021 estimates that classify usual residents in households in England and Wales by ethnic group and by accommodation type. The estimates are as at Census Day, 21 March 2021.

    Area type

    Census 2021 statistics are published for a number of different geographies. These can be large, for example the whole of England, or small, for example an output area (OA), the lowest level of geography for which statistics are produced.

    For higher levels of geography, more detailed statistics can be produced. When a lower level of geography is used, such as output areas (which have a minimum of 100 persons), the statistics produced have less detail. This is to protect the confidentiality of people and ensure that individuals or their characteristics cannot be identified.

    Lower tier local authorities

    Lower tier local authorities provide a range of local services. There are 309 lower tier local authorities in England made up of 181 non-metropolitan districts, 59 unitary authorities, 36 metropolitan districts and 33 London boroughs (including City of London). In Wales there are 22 local authorities made up of 22 unitary authorities.

    Coverage

    Census 2021 statistics are published for the whole of England and Wales. However, you can choose to filter areas by:

    • country - for example, Wales
    • region - for example, London
    • local authority - for example, Cornwall
    • health area – for example, Clinical Commissioning Group
    • statistical area - for example, MSOA or LSOA

    Ethnic group

    The ethnic group that the person completing the census feels they belong to. This could be based on their culture, family background, identity or physical appearance.

    Respondents could choose one out of 19 tick-box response categories, including write-in response options.

    Accommodation type

    The type of building or structure used or available by an individual or household.

    This could be:

    • the whole house or bungalow
    • a flat, maisonette or apartment
    • a temporary or mobile structure, such as a caravan

Occupancy rating for roomsThis dataset provides Census 2021 estimates that classify households in England and Wales by occupancy rating based on the number of rooms in the household. The estimates are as at Census Day, 21 March 2021. Occupancy rating for rooms definition: Whether a household's accommodation is overcrowded, ideally occupied or under-occupied.     Population in private households refers to all persons or group of persons who occupy the same dwelling and do not have a usual place of residence elsewhere in Canada or abroad. For census purposes, households are classified into three groups: private households, collective households, and households outside Canada. Unless otherwise specified, all data in census products are for private households only. Population in private households includes Canadian citizens and landed immigrants whose usual place of residence is Canada. Also includes refugee claimants, holders of work and study permits, Canadian citizens and landed immigrants at sea or in port aboard merchant or government vessels, and Canadian citizens away from Canada on military or diplomatic business. Excludes government representatives and military members of other countries and residents of other countries visiting Canada.

    Age refers to the age of a person (or subject) of interest at last birthday (or relative to a specified, well‑defined reference date).

    Gender refers to an individual's personal and social identity as a man, woman, or non‑binary person (a person who is not exclusively a man or a woman). A person's gender may differ from their sex at birth, and from what is indicated on their current identification or legal documents such as their birth certificate, passport, or driver's licence. A person's gender may change over time. Statistics Canada collected data about transgender and non-binary populations for the first time on the 2021 Census. The category "Men+" includes men (and/or boys), as well as some non-binary persons. The category "Women+" also includes women (and/or girls), as well as some non-binary persons.

    This is a one-time load of Statistics Canada federal census data from 2021 applied to the Communities, Wards, and City geographical boundaries current as of 2022 (so they will likely not match the current year's boundaries). For age groups we divided it into roughly a 5 year bucket for ages between 0 and 85. For over 85, we aggregated data into a single group for all ages.     Measurement technique
    The data presented in this dataset is derived from the latest U.S. Census Bureau American Community Survey (ACS) 2017-2021 5-Year Estimates. To measure the two variables, namely (a) population and (b) population as a percentage of the total population, we initially analyzed and categorized the data for each of the age groups. For age groups we divided it into roughly a 5 year bucket for ages between 0 and 85. For over 85, we aggregated data into a single group for all ages.     Context

    The dataset tabulates the Coquille population distribution across 18 age groups. It lists the population in each age group along with the percentage population relative of the total population for Coquille. Although the American Community Survey (ACS) produces population, demographic and housing unit estimates, the decennial census is the official source of population totals for April 1st of each decennial year. In between censuses, the Census Bureau's Population Estimates Program produces and disseminates the official estimates of the population for the nation, states, counties, cities, and towns and estimates of housing units and the group quarters population for states and counties..Information about the American Community Survey (ACS) can be found on the ACS website.
