Revenue for the Cigarette and Tobacco Products Wholesaling industry has shrunk over the past five years as wholesalers have contended with expanding regulatory and economic challenges and shifts in consumer preferences. The rapidly growing popularity of e-cigarettes has prompted wholesalers to expand their product portfolios, partially offsetting declines in cigarette and tobacco products. Despite plummeting smoking rates, e-cigarette usage kept sales steady amid the pandemic. Over the past five years, revenue for the Cigarette and Tobacco Products Wholesaling industry has expanded at a CAGR of 2.4% to reach an estimated $169.9 billion in 2025, despite a 3.0% drop in 2025. Cigarette consumption levels have declined steadily as antismoking campaigns and swelling excise taxes have repelled new potential customers. Still, demand for noncigarette tobacco products like snuff, cigarillos, e-cigarettes and premium cigars has persisted. Regulation surrounding e-cigarettes has yet to evolve fully, as the FDA only first claimed regulatory authority over the products in 2016. The previous five-year period was characterized by explosive growth in e-cigarettes, with the Center for Disease Control reporting a 122.2% increase in sales between 2014 and 2020. This e-cigarette boom has led profit for cigarette and tobacco product wholesalers to inch up. An increasingly stringent regulatory environment and rising social stigma against smoking and tobacco use will continue reducing traditional tobacco product consumption over the next five years. E-cigarettes will remain popular among younger consumers, although regulation surrounding cigarette alternatives will expand. A handful of new wholesalers will continue entering the industry to capitalize on the e-cigarette boom. Competition from substitutes like marijuana will intensify, prompting some wholesalers to consolidate. Over the next five years, revenue will inch down at a CAGR of 0.9%, reaching an estimated $162.8 billion in 2030.

TwitterThis statistic shows the leading cigarette brands in the United Kingdom (UK) in 2016, by total value of sales. The Sterling cigarette brand was the top selling cigarette brand in 2016, generating sales of approximately 1.51 billion British pounds. The most expensive country in which to purchase cigarettes in Europe is the United Kingdom (UK). Cigarette prices across Europe are driven by the respective taxes imposed within each of the member states and consist of a specific duty per 1,000 cigarettes and an ad valorem rate onto the recommended retail price, in addition to value added tax (VAT). Thus the highest rates of taxation are reflected in the retail prices. Similar rates of taxation between countries are also found for hand rolling tobacco, where the highest levels of taxation are found in the United Kingdom once again. Governments that impose such strong barriers to the purchasing of tobacco are considered 'nanny states', with high levels of control on other factors, such as advertising, bans of tobacco products on retail displays and graphic warnings on cigarette packs.
