Florida, which ranked second, produced justover 7.5 million cwt. That year, the price of tomatoes per cwt in California stood at approximately 50 U.S. dollars. Global vegetable production In 2021, the tomato was the single most produced vegetable type in the world . Other highly produced vegetables within that period were onions, cucumbers, and cabbages among others. Tomatoes

The tomato plant belongs to the so called nightshade family. It is one of the most popular vegetables worldwide. Tomatoes originated in Mexico and spread around the world after the Spanish colonization of the American continent. Today, approximately 150 million metric tons of tomatoes are produced globally.

The United States produces around 1.4 million metric tons of tomatoes for fresh market consumption. The largest proportion of U.S. tomato production is used for further processing. The top U.S. states based on tomato production for fresh market usage are California and Florida.

Per capita tomato consumption in the United States was stable over the past decade. Every American consumes more than 17 kilograms of fresh tomatoes annually. According to a study, every fourth American consumer buys fresh tomatoes weekly or even more frequently. Since 2000, average U.S. retail prices for one pound of field grown tomatoes varied between 1.40 and 2.47 U.S. dollars.

Onions and tomatoes have the highest per capita consumption in the United States of any type of fresh vegetable in 2023. That year, the average American consumed around 21.2 pounds of onions and 19.2 pounds of tomatoes. Vegetable production in the United States The overwhelming majority of the vegetables produced in the United States originate from California. In 2020, California produced some 436 million centum weight of fresh and processing marketing vegetables. For perspective, the first and second runner-ups in terms of vegetable production that year were Washington and Arizona, which produced around 39 and 32 million centum weight of vegetables, respectively. Processed vegetables Vegetable processing typically refers to a procedure to make vegetables ready for human consumption and to make the vegetables last longer and prevent spoilage. A few examples include canning, pickling, and freezing. Though fresh vegetables are generally considered more nutritious than canned vegetables, about 60 percent of the per capita utilization of vegetables in the United States is attributed to processed vegetables as opposed to fresh vegetables.

    Description

Late blight (LB), caused by the oomycete Phytophthora infestans, is one of the most devastating diseases of the cultivated tomato (Solanum lycopersicum) worldwide. Attempts to control the disease through fungicide applications are becoming less effective, as new and aggressive genotypes of the pathogen emerge. Further, some new P. infestans genotypes overcome the currently available resistance in tomato, necessitating the identification, characterization, and utilization of new sources of host resistance. In the present study, to detect QTLs underlying LB resistance in a recently-identified LB-resistant S. pimpinellifolium accession (PI 270442), an F2 population (n = 1,175) of a cross between PI 270442 and LB-susceptible tomato breeding line Fla. 8059 was screened for LB resistance and subjected to selective genotyping. A total of 19,839 single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) were identified from reduced representation libraries (RRLs) constructed from the parents, of which 212 were used to build a genetic linkage map and locate QTLs. Ten LB-resistance QTLs were identified in PI 270442 on chromosomes 1, 2, 5, 6, 10, 11 and 12, of which those on chromosomes 6, 10 and 11 were the strongest and co-localized with previously-reported LB-resistance QTLs. Genomic locations of the QTLs were compared with the tomato physical map, which resulted in the identification of several candidate genes that might be underpinning the LB resistance in PI 270442. The identified QTL-linked markers can be used in breeding programs to transfer resistance from PI 270442 into the cultivated tomato via marker-assisted breeding and to develop near-isogenic lines for fine mapping of the QTLs.
