NIFTY 500 is India’s first broad-based stock market index of the Indian stock market. It contains the top 500 listed companies on the NSE. The NIFTY 500 index represents about 96.1% of free-float market capitalization and 96.5% of the total turnover on the National Stock Exchange (NSE).
NIFTY 500 companies are disaggregated into 72 industry indices. Industry weights in the index reflect industry weights in the market. For example, if the banking sector has a 5% weight in the universe of stocks traded on the NSE, banking stocks in the index would also have an approximate representation of 5% in the index. NIFTY 500 can be used for a variety of purposes such as benchmarking fund portfolios, launching index funds, ETFs, and other structured products.
The dataset comprises various parameters and features for each of the NIFTY 500 Stocks, including Company Name, Symbol, Industry, Series, Open, High, Low, Previous Close, Last Traded Price, Change, Percentage Change, Share Volume, Value in Indian Rupee, 52 Week High, 52 Week Low, 365 Day Percentage Change, and 30 Day Percentage Change.
Company Name: Name of the Company.
Symbol: A stock symbol is a unique series of letters assigned to a security for trading purposes.
Industry: Name of the industry to which the stock belongs.
Series: EQ stands for Equity. In this series intraday trading is possible in addition to delivery and BE stands for Book Entry. Shares falling in the Trade-to-Trade or T-segment are traded in this series and no intraday is allowed. This means trades can only be settled by accepting or giving the delivery of shares.
Open: It is the price at which the financial security opens in the market when trading begins. It may or may not be different from the previous day's closing price. The security may open at a higher price than the closing price due to excess demand for the security.
High: It is the highest price at which a stock is traded during the course of the trading day and is typically higher than the closing or equal to the opening price.
Low: Today's low is a security's intraday low trading price. Today's low is the lowest price at which a stock trades over the course of a trading day.
Previous Close: The previous close almost always refers to the prior day's final price of a security when the market officially closes for the day. It can apply to a stock, bond, commodity, futures or option co-contract, market index, or any other security.
Last Traded Price: The last traded price (LTP) usually differs from the closing price of the day. This is because the closing price of the day on NSE is the weighted average price of the last 30 mins of trading. The last traded price of the day is the actual last traded price.
Change: For a stock or bond quote, change is the difference between the current price and the last trade of the previous day. For interest rates, change is benchmarked against a major market rate (e.g., LIBOR) and may only be updated as infrequently as once a quarter.
Percentage Change: Take the selling price and subtract the initial purchase price. The result is the gain or loss. Take the gain or loss from the investment and divide it by the original amount or purchase price of the investment. Finally, multiply the result by 100 to arrive at the percentage change in the investment.
Share Volume: Volume is an indicator that means the total number of shares that have been bought or sold in a specific period of time or during the trading day. It will also involve the buying and selling of every share during a specific time period.
Value (Indian Rupee): Market value—also known as market cap—is calculated by multiplying a company's outstanding shares by its current market price.
52-Week High: A 52-week high is the highest share price that a stock has traded at during a passing year. Many market aficionados view the 52-week high as an important factor in determining a stock's current value and predicting future price movement. 52-week High prices are adjusted for Bonus, Split & Rights Corporate actions.

Interactive chart of the NASDAQ Composite stock market index since 1971. Historical data is inflation-adjusted using the headline CPI and each data point represents the month-end closing value. The current month is updated on an hourly basis with today's latest value.
In the first quarter of 2020, global stock indices posted substantial losses that were triggered by the outbreak of COVID-19. The period from March 6 to 18 was particularly dramatic, with several stock indices losing more than 20 percent of their value.
Worldwide panic hits markets From the United States to the United Kingdom, stock market indices suffered steep falls as the coronavirus pandemic created economic uncertainty. The Nasdaq 100 and S&P 500 are two indices that track company performance in the United States, and both lost value as lockdowns were introduced in the country. European markets also recorded significant slumps, which triggered panic selling among investors. The FTSE 100 – the leading share index of companies in the UK – plunged by as much as 21 percent in the opening weeks of March 2020.
Is it time to invest in tech stocks? The S&P 500 is regarded as the best representation of the U.S. economy because it includes more companies from the leading industries. However, helped in no small part by its focus on tech companies, the Nasdaq 100 has risen in popularity and seen remarkable growth in recent years. Global demand for digital technologies has increased further due to the coronavirus, with remote working and online shopping becoming part of the new normal. As a result, more investors are likely to switch to the tech stocks listed on the Nasdaq 100.
This statistic presents a ranking of the market capitalization of selected U.S. tech and internet companies in 2006, and from 2014 to 2020. Apple's market cap soared from 461.41 billion U.S. dollars in 2014 to 1.53 trillion dollars in 2020. Apple's market cap pushed the company ahead of last year's leader Microsoft.
Public offerings of tech and internet companies
A public offering is the offering of securities of a company or a similar corporation to the public. Generally, the securities are to be listed on a stock exchange. The initial public offering (IPO) of a company occurs when a company offers its shares for the first time for public ownership and trading.
Hardware companies such as Apple or IBM have been traded publicly for a while but younger, online-based companies such as Google or most notably Facebook and most recently, Snap Inc. have been generating a lot of buzz surrounding their IPOs and subsequent stock prices. Facebook’s initial public offering was intensely hyped over months with projections of a 100 billion US dollar valuation but it dwindled down to a range of 60 to 75 billion US dollars prior to the listing.
Other tech stock performances have been more stable – both online retailer Amazon and search and digital advertising giant Google’s - now Alphabet's - shares have been on a more upwards trend. The most impressive development however came from Apple which totally changed its stock performance after the 2008 introduction of the iPhone. Since then, the company has been catapulted to the top of the smartphone market, multiplying its market capitalization as well as regularly being ranked as one of the most valuable brands worldwide.

With a market capitalization of 3.12 trillion U.S. dollars as of May 2024, Microsoft was the world’s largest company that year. Rounding out the top five were some of the world’s most recognizable brands: Apple, NVIDIA, Google’s parent company Alphabet, and Amazon. Saudi Aramco led the ranking of the world's most profitable companies in 2023, with a pre-tax income of nearly 250 billion U.S. dollars. How are market value and market capitalization determined? Market value and market capitalization are two terms frequently used – and confused - when discussing the profitability and viability of companies. Strictly speaking, market capitalization (or market cap) is the worth of a company based on the total value of all their shares; an important metric when determining the comparative value of companies for trading opportunities. Accordingly, many stock exchanges such as the New York or London Stock Exchange release market capitalization data on their listed companies. On the other hand, market value technically refers to what a company is worth in a much broader context. It is determined by multiple factors, including profitability, corporate debt, and the market environment as a whole. In this sense it aims to estimate the overall value of a company, with share price only being one element. Market value is therefore useful for determining whether a company’s shares are over- or undervalued, and in arriving at a price if the company is to be sold. Such valuations are generally made on a case-by-case basis though, and not regularly reported. For this reason, market capitalization is often reported as market value. What are the top companies in the world? The answer to this question depends on the metric used. Although the largest company by market capitalization, Microsoft's global revenue did not manage to crack the top 20 companies. Rather, American multinational retailer Walmart was ranked as the largest company in the world by revenue. Walmart also had the highest number of employees in the world.
As of April 10, 2025, tech giants Apple, Microsoft, Nvidia, Alphabet (Google), and Amazon dominated the S&P 500 index and were among only eight companies with a market capitalization exceeding *** ******** U.S. dollars in the U.S.
As of Janaury 2025, the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) and the Nasdaq - the two largest stock exchange operators in the United States - held a combined market capitalization for domestic listed companies of over ** trillion U.S. dollars. Both markets were almost evenly sized at this point in time - at approximately ** and ** trillion U.S. dollars, respectively. However, the Nasdaq has grown much quicker than the NYSE since January 2018, when their respective domestic market caps were ** and ** trillion U.S. dollars. Much of this can be attributed to the success of information technology stocks during the global coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, as the Nasdaq is the traditional venue for companies operating in the tech sector.

The Indian security brokerage market, valued at approximately ₹3940 million (assuming "Million" refers to Indian Rupees) in 2025, is experiencing robust growth, projected to expand at a Compound Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) of 7.89% from 2025 to 2033. This growth is fueled by several key factors. Increased internet and smartphone penetration, coupled with rising financial literacy and a young, digitally-savvy population, are driving greater participation in online trading platforms. Government initiatives promoting financial inclusion and deregulation are also contributing to market expansion. The market is segmented by security type (bonds, stocks, treasury notes, derivatives, others), brokerage service (stocks, insurance, mortgage, real estate, forex, leasing, others), and service model (full-service, discount, online, robo-advisor). The dominance of online and discount brokerage models reflects the cost-conscious nature of many Indian investors. Leading players such as Zerodha, Angel Broking, Upstox, and Groww are leveraging technology to enhance user experience and expand their market share, while established players like ICICI Direct are adapting to the changing landscape. Competition remains fierce, with firms continually innovating to attract and retain clients. The competitive landscape is characterized by a mix of established full-service brokers and rapidly growing online discount brokers. While established players leverage their brand recognition and comprehensive service offerings, the online discount brokers are attracting a significant share of the market through low-cost trading platforms and user-friendly interfaces. The increasing popularity of robo-advisors, which offer automated investment management, represents a significant emerging trend. However, regulatory challenges and concerns related to cybersecurity and investor protection remain potential restraints. The market’s future growth will depend on sustained economic growth, investor confidence, and the ongoing development of robust regulatory frameworks. Further expansion is expected in less-penetrated segments like insurance and real estate brokerage services, aligning with the broader financial needs of the growing middle class. This comprehensive report provides an in-depth analysis of the burgeoning India security brokerage market, projecting robust growth from 2025 to 2033.
