    Aluminum industry worldwide

In 2023, China was the largest producer of primary aluminum worldwide, by a large margin. That year, aluminum production in China amounted to 41 million metric tons, while India came in second place with four million metric tons of primary aluminum. The United States was the world's ninth-largest aluminum producer in 2023. Though aluminum is used in many different industries, the construction sector was the leading buyer of semi-finished aluminum, at 25 percent of the global demand as of 2020.

Aluminum recycling in the United States

Aluminum is one of the most commonly recycled materials in the United States among consumers. According to a 2017 survey, 76 percent of Americans recycle aluminum, or some other kind of metal. Aluminum can also be recycled from scrap metal. In 2019, around 76 billion U.S. dollars worth of aluminum was recycled from scrap, compared to about 12.4 billion U.S. dollars of iron and steel and 5.33 billion U.S. dollars of copper.

    Description

Japan’s trade openness has increased significantly in the last decades as the country is working towards market liberalization and the expansion of trade relations. However, despite the increasing number of bilateral agreements created with trading partners, the United States and China remain Japan's biggest export markets. In 2023, the United States received around 20 percent of commodities leaving Japan. China followed with a 17.6 percent share, with general and electrical machinery being major goods exported from Japan to the East Asian partner. What goods are leaving Japan? Japan exported commodities valued at around 101 trillion Japanese yen in 2023. Transport equipment and machinery were the leading commodities leaving the country, driven by the prominence of domestic automotive and machinery brands in the global market. Motor vehicles are a long-standing pillar of the export market, with widely recognized brands like Honda, Mazda, Mitsubishi, Nissan, and Toyota originating from Japan. Japan’s export position in the global market The demand for Japanese goods has been rising globally, pushed by the favorable impression of quality products among consumers and businesses. While Japan is not a heavily trade-dependent nation, the trade openness ratio jumped significantly in 2022, as the sum of imports and exports constituted a 46.8 percent share of the gross domestic product. Commodity exports themselves accounted for a 17.6 percent share of the Japanese GDP, whereas service exports are a minor segment in Japan’s trade accounts.

The United States was the world’s leading exporter of natural gas in 2023, exporting 89.1 billion cubic meters of gas via pipelines and 114.4 billion cubic meters of liquefied natural gas (LNG). Russia was the second-largest natural gas exporter globally, followed by Qatar and Norway. Pipeline vs LNG exports Among other top natural gas exporters, Canada is one of only two countries relying exclusively on pipelines. Pipelines are considered the safest means of transporting gaseous fuels, however, their use is often limited to shorter distances over land. As such, the United States is Canada's only direct trading partner for natural gas. Pipelines are also the most common form of moving gas across the European continent, with the majority of Russian natural gas exports ending in European consumer markets. LNG on the other hand is mostly used in inter-continental exports to destinations far removed from large-scale producing sites. Japan, China, and South Korea make up more than half of the LNG import market share worldwide. Natural gas liquefaction When pipeline transport is not feasible, natural gas is liquified to be transported over long distances. During this process, natural gas is cooled down to minus 160 degrees Celsius, which results in a reduction of its volume by around 600-fold. Natural gas was first transported in its liquid stage in the late 1950s. In 2023, the United States was the country with the largest operating LNG export capacity worldwide, Australia came in second place. Also, the country with the leading LNG export capacity under development was United States.

    Description

Between January and November 2022, China exported around 444 billion yuan worths of medical equipment. The export of medical equipment surged in 2020, thanks to the high demand of medical consumables during the coronavirus pandemic. The United States, Japan, and Germany were the leading export markets for China's medical equipment in 2022.

Changing Chinese regulations - a domestic market boom? The medical technology market in China is difficult for overseas manufacturers to penetrate, due to the ever-changing market requirements and regulations, which must be observed to in order to have an impact on the industry. The familiarity of these regulations and improved accessibility for domestic manufacturers has proliferated the growth of local manufacturers of high-end medical technology. Low-end medical technology is still the primary market for local manufacturers and recent developments have allowed local producers to compete with overseas manufacturers. However, imported high-end technology is still preferred over locally produced technologies.

State of exports before the COVID-19 pandemic The year 2016 witnessed the election of Donald Trump as the President of the United States. The ensuing trade war between the U.S. and China resulted in a drastic fall of exports from China to its major consumers. Nevertheless, the medical technology industry has since registered significant growth in exports across the world. The most prominent manufactured entity were medical apparatus, which included both high-end and low-end medical technology, accounting for approximately half of the medical export revenue before 2020. Rehabilitation and diagnostic equipment also constituted a large share of the export revenue of China’s medtech.

    Description

In 2023, the volume of tequila exported from Mexico amounted to about 401 million liters, representing a decrease of about four percent compared to the previous year. Despite this decrease, tequila's rise in popularity has meant a constant growth for exports overall. In the past 10 years, exports increased by about 133 percent. A similar tendency can bee observed in tequila production during the same time span.

    Where is tequila exported to?

With tequila evolving from a local drink to a worldwide known beverage, the United States has become the main destination for Mexico’s tequila exports. In 2022, exports of the beverage from the country to its Northern neighbor reached approximately 338 million liters, more than 32 times the volume destined towards Mexico’s second most important tequila exports partner, Germany.

    José Cuervo as market leader

José Cuervo is the top-selling tequila brand in the world. In the United States, the popular brand, manufactured by Tequila Cuervo La Rojeña S.A. de C.V., accounted for 19.5 percent of the market’s sales volume in 2021. This translated into over 4.8 million nine-liter cases of tequila sold in the North American country that year, an increase of around 59 percent in comparison to 2013 sales.

    Description

The statistic shows the gross domestic product (GDP) per capita in India from 1987 to 2029. In 2020, the estimated gross domestic product per capita in India amounted to about 1,915.55 U.S. dollars. See figures on India's economic growth here. For comparison, per capita GDP in China had reached about 6,995.25 U.S. dollars in 2013.

    India's economic progress

India’s progress as a country over the past decade can be attributed to a global dependency on cheaper production of goods and services from developed countries around the world. India’s economy is built upon its agriculture, manufacturing and services sector, which, along with its drastic rise in population and demand for employment, led to a significant increase of the nation’s GDP per capita. Despite experiencing rather momentous economic gains since the mid 2000s, the Indian economy stagnated around 2012, with a decrease in general growth as well as the value of its currency. Residents and consumers in India have recently shown pessimism regarding the future of the Indian economy as well as their own financial situation, and with the recent economic standstill, consumer confidence in the country could potentially lower in the near future.

Typical Indian exports consist of agricultural products, jewelry, chemicals and ores. Imports consist primarily of crude oil, gold and precious stones, used primarily in the manufacturing of jewelry. As a result, India has seen a rather highly increased demand of several gems in order to boost their jewelry industry and in general their exports. Although India does not export an extensive amount of goods, especially when considering the stature of the country, India has remained as one of the world’s largest exporters.

    Description

Around 22 percent of Australian consumers consider having sustainable products available to purchase in the clothing and fashion sector as very important, according to a 2022 survey. In comparison, only twelve percent of respondents stated that they did not view the availability of sustainable clothing items as important. State of the Australian apparel market In 2022, Australia recorded an apparel market revenue of around 18 billion U.S. dollars, with revenue expected to reach around 22 billion U.S. dollars by 2027. Women’s apparel is the largest segment within the Australian apparel market, generating a revenue of approximately 10 billion U.S. dollars in 2022, with the men’s apparel segment valued at around four billion U.S. dollars less that year. Australia manufactures, exports, and imports large quantities of new clothing annually, with trousers and shorts the most common clothing imports. The majority of apparel product imports to Australia come from China and Bangladesh. The path to a circular fashion industry Australians are among the biggest consumers of clothing worldwide, with the average Australian consuming around 14 kilograms of new clothing per annum. Due to high consumption levels, the country has a large clothing waste issue. Nonetheless, there is promise on the horizon. In June 2023, the Australian Fashion Council (AFC) launched its Seamless initiative, which aims to transform the country’s clothing industry by expanding recycling points, educating and empowering consumers through re-education campaigns on clothing acquisition and disposal, and encouraging circular business models and production processes. Moreover, Australian consumers are slowly abandoning fast fashion and engaging more in resale activities as they become more aware of the environmental and human impacts of their consumption.

    Description

The euro and U.S. dollar made up more than seven of 10 SWIFT payments worldwide in 2024, outperforming many other currencies. This is according to a monthly report meant to track the market share of China's yuan renminbi within the international bank transfer system SWIFT. Although China holds the largest forex reserves in the world, the yuan ranked as the eighth-used currency in international payments. The figures concern customer-initiated and institutional payments and exclude trade. Discussions on the potential weakening role of the U.S. dollar especially touch world trade and forex. For example, the share of the USD in forex reserves declined visibly against the euro and Japanese yen in 2023. What sparked this de-dollarization trend, and will it continue? Trade sanctions and de-dollarization De-dollarization in 2023 is mentioned mostly alongside trade and the BRICS countries - an informal name given to Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa. The combined GDP of BRICS is about 25 percent of the world's economy. After the start of the Ukraine war and Russia received economic sanctions, the BRICS slowly evolved into a trading bloc. The group increasingly wanted its own currency to settle payments within the trade bloc, to avoid using the U.S. dollar. In August 2023, BRICS will gather in South Africa to discuss the creation of such a new joint currency. Additionally, 19 countries - including Argentina, Algeria, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Turkey, and Yemen - expressed interest in joining the BRICS group. CBDC, or projects into a digital payment settlement A factor of future uncertainty for the U.S. dollar is how central bank digital currencies (CBDC) develop in emerging countries. Several projects exist between individual countries that specifically target cross-border interbank payments. A cooperation between Thailand and Hong Kong, Inthanon-Lionrock, ranks as the most advanced of these projects. CBDC does not require the U.S. dollar to function. Tangible such as commodities or gold can back them. The value of transactions processed with CBDC is to grow by 260,000 percent between 2023 and 2030.
