These tables provide additional detail on the investment holdings of U.S. money market funds, based on a monthly dataset of security-level holdings for all U.S. money market funds. Table 1 reports the aggregate dollar amount of investments of U.S. money market funds since 2010, by the world region and country of the security issuer. Table 2 provides a finer level of detail by month, showing, for each country of issuer, the aggregate dollar amount of investments of U.S. money market funds by type of money fund (i.e., prime, government, and municipal bond funds), type of security (i.e., direct debt and deposits, repurchase agreement, asset-backed commercial paper, and other), and by maturity of the security. Table 3 depicts the asset allocation of U.S. money market fund portfolios over time. Tables 4, 5, and 6 show the asset allocation of prime, government, and tax-exempt money market funds, respectively, over time. The sum of the values in these three tables equals the total value of Table 3. Tables 7 and 8 report additional detail on the repurchase agreement holdings and the commercial paper holdings, respectively, for U.S. money market funds.

Beginning in 2011, the total value of money market funds (MMFs) amounted to over three trillion U.S. dollars in the United States. The majority of this amount was accounted for by prime funds up until 2016. From 2011 through to 2016, the MMFs primarily allocated assets to prime and government funds. The overall value of MMFs more than doubled from 2011 to 2024 as the net inflow increased by approximately 3.6 trillion U.S. dollars.
In 2023, repurchase agreements were the most common assets held by taxable prime money market funds in the United States. These assets made up 40.9 percent of the total net assets that year. The second-largest share of total net assets in 2023 was composed of certificates of deposit, at around 27.4 percent. This was followed by commercial paper, which made up 23.8 percent of total net assets.
The total global net assets of mutual funds registered in the United States amounted to approximately 25.5 trillion U.S. dollars in 2023, compared to around 5.53 trillion U.S. dollars in 1998. Mutual funds - additional information Mutual funds are investment funds in which the capital is pooled from a number of different investors and then used to buy securities such as stocks, bonds or money market instruments. Although investing in mutual funds, rather than direct investment in individual securities, still presents a certain degree of risk, it has become more and more common practice around the world. One of the biggest advantages of this type of investment is the fact that the fund assets are managed by professionals, who aim to eliminate some of the risk involved in investing in individual stocks and bonds through diversification of assets. As of 2022, there were almost 7,400 mutual funds domiciled in the United States. There are four main types of mutual funds, categorized by the nature of their principal investments, namely: stock or equity funds (whether domestic or international), bond or fixed income funds, money market funds and hybrid funds. In 2022, domestic equity funds were the most popular category in the United States, representing 46 percent of all mutual fund and ETF assets.

From January 2020 through January 2025, the value of money market funds under management in the United Kingdom (UK) remained relatively stable aside from one notable spike in value in October 2022, by January 2023, however, the spike had subsided, and fund levels had fallen below 50 million British pounds.
How are money market yields linked to inflation? The money market yields are influenced by inflation expectations. When inflation expectations rise, investors typically demand higher nominal yields to offset the anticipated decline in purchasing power. Market sentiment regarding inflation is reflected in these yields, which act as indicators for both investors and policymakers. The inflation rate for the Consumer Price Index (CPI) in the United Kingdom went from under one percent in March 2021 to a high of 11.1 percent in October 2022. Although inflation declined to 3.9 percent in October 2023, it remained well above the levels seen before 2021. Consequently, a significant increase in money market yields was observed. Beginning in 2022, the monthly average yields from the British government bonds continued to rise until they reached their peak in mid-2023, indicating higher inflation expectations.
What is LIBOR? The London Interbank Offered Rate, or LIBOR, is a benchmark interest rate that reflects the average interest rate at which major global banks lend to each other in the interbank market. It is used to establish interest rates for financial instruments such as adjustable-rate mortgages, business loans, and derivatives. The six-month overnight London Interbank Offered Rate based on the British pound increased month by month from 2022 onwards, reaching its peak in March 2023 at 4.74 percent. This increase in borrowing costs has a ripple effect throughout the financial system, which means higher interest rates for businesses and consumers overall.
