    Description

In 2023, the common equity tier 1 (CET1) capital ratio of HSBC increased in comparison to the previous year. The ratio declined for the third consecutive year in 2022, and that year, the decrease was quite notable too. The CET1 capital ratio of HSBC reached a peak value of 15.9 percent in 2020 and remained similarly high - with a slight drop - in 2021 and 2022. In 2023, however, the ratio increased to 14.8 percent. Despite the decrease over the last few years, the CET1 ratio of HSBC remained well above the European average. What is the tier 1 capital ratio? Tier 1 capital is essentially the amount of money a bank has on hand in case it needs to cover unexpected expenses from risky transactions. Core capital is mostly the combination of retained earnings and common stock. This statistic reports the value of this common stock against risk divided by the risk-weighted total of HSBC’s assets. This is important because losses in these assets or a sudden uptick in withdrawals can easily be covered by tier 1 capital, making this a measure of a bank’s robustness. Importance of core capital Banks keep core capital to guard against unexpected expenses. In the very short run, commercial banks can also borrow from the central bank’s discount window for a low interest rate. In the United States, this is the federal funds rate. Without such reserves and financing options, a run on deposits or a large default on assets can lead to insolvencies.

    Description

The global financial investment services market is experiencing robust growth, driven by increasing disposable incomes, expanding middle classes in emerging economies, and a growing preference for diversified investment portfolios. The market's compound annual growth rate (CAGR) is estimated to be around 7-8% during the forecast period (2025-2033), based on historical growth rates and projected economic expansion. Key drivers include technological advancements, such as the rise of fintech and robo-advisors, which are making investment services more accessible and affordable. Furthermore, the increasing demand for wealth management services among high-net-worth individuals and institutional investors is fueling market expansion. Regulatory changes and geopolitical uncertainties pose challenges to consistent growth. However, the overall outlook remains positive, with significant opportunities for expansion in underpenetrated markets and emerging technologies. Major players like Goldman Sachs, Morgan Stanley, J.P. Morgan, Bank of America, Citibank, Credit Suisse, Barclays, UBS, Deutsche Bank, and HSBC dominate the market, leveraging their extensive networks and expertise. However, the increasing penetration of fintech companies is fostering competition. These disruptors are offering innovative solutions, often at lower costs, forcing established players to adapt and innovate to maintain their market share. The market is segmented by service type (e.g., wealth management, asset management, investment banking), investment vehicle (e.g., equities, bonds, derivatives), and client type (e.g., retail investors, institutional investors). Regional variations exist, with North America and Europe currently holding the largest market share, but Asia-Pacific is expected to exhibit significant growth potential due to its expanding economy and burgeoning middle class. The study period of 2019-2033 provides a comprehensive overview of the market's evolution, highlighting both opportunities and challenges for stakeholders.

The UK retail banking market, valued at approximately £68.77 billion in 2025, is projected to experience steady growth, driven by several key factors. The increasing adoption of digital banking solutions, including online platforms and mobile apps, is significantly impacting market dynamics. Consumers are increasingly demanding convenient and personalized financial services, prompting banks to invest heavily in technological upgrades and user-friendly interfaces. Furthermore, the rise of fintech companies is fostering competition and innovation, leading to the introduction of new products and services, such as mobile payment systems and personalized financial management tools. While Brexit initially presented challenges, the market has shown resilience, with banks adapting to new regulatory environments and focusing on strengthening customer relationships. The segment showing the strongest growth is likely online banking, driven by younger demographics' preference for digital interactions and increased smartphone penetration. Description

Over the five years through 2024-25, UK banks' revenue is expected to climb at a compound annual rate of 1.7% to £128.6 billion, including an anticipated hike of 2% in 2024-25. After the financial crisis in 2007-08, low interest rates limited banks' interest in loans, hitting income. At the same time, a stricter regulatory environment, including increased capital requirements introduced under the Basel III banking reforms and ring-fencing regulations, constricted lending activity. To protect their profitability, banks such as Lloyds have shut the doors of many branches and made substantial job cuts. Following the COVID-19 outbreak, the Bank of England adopted aggressive tightening of monetary policy, hiking interest rates to rein in spiralling inflation. The higher base rate environment lifted borrowing costs, driving interest income for banks, who reported skyrocketing profits in 2023-24. Although profit grew markedly, pressure to pass on higher rates to savers and fierce competition weighed on net interest income at the tail end of the year, the difference between interest paid and interest received. UK banks are set to continue performing well in 2024-25 as the higher interest rate environment maintains healthy interest income, aiding revenue growth. However, net interest income is set to dip marginally due to higher deposit costs and narrow margins on mortgage loans. With further rate cuts priced into markets, savings rates will drop in 2024-25, stemming the drop in net interest income. Over the five years through 2029-30, industry revenue is forecast to swell at a compound annual rate of 3.3% to reach £151.1 billion. Regulatory restrictions, tougher stress tests and stringent lending criteria will also hamper revenue growth. Competition is set to remain fierce – both internally from lenders that deliver their services exclusively via digital channels and externally from alternative finance providers, like peer-to-peer lending platforms. The possibility of legislation like the Edinburgh reforms will drive investment and lending activity in the coming years, if introduced. However, concerns surrounding the repercussions of less stringent capital requirements and the already fragile nature of the UK financial system pose doubt as to whether any significant changes will be made.
