In 2022, there were an estimated 2,001 hospitals in the United Kingdom. The number of hospitals in the UK had been declining prior to 2015, standing at 1,568 in 2014, before slightly rising again in the subsequent years.
Healthcare indicators
Expenditure on health in the UK amounted to 11.3 percent of the GDP in 2022. This proportion has been increasing since 2000, with 2020 and 201 being outliers. The pressure on general practices has been increasing in the UK in the last ten years. In 2016, there were 7.8 thousand patients to each GP practice on average in the NHS England. By 2023 it came to ten thousand patients to a practice.
Opinion of healthcare in the country
The quality of British healthcare is still generally regarded as good by the majority. In a survey of nine European countries, 58 percent of British respondents rated the quality of their accessible healthcare as good, while only 14 percent regarded it as poor. This was the fifth place among countries surveyed, down from its top spot in 2018, when 73 percent of the public gave good rating. Similarly, 58 percent of Brits surveyed trusted the treatment offered, compared to only 18 percent who did not.
The number of hospital beds in the United Kingdom has undergone a decline since the year 2000. Whereas in 2000, there were around 240 thousand beds in the UK, by 2020 this figure was approximately 163 thousand. This means over this period there were over 80 thousand fewer hospital beds in the UK. However in the recent years since 2020, the number of hospital beds have been increasing, the first time in the recorded time period.
Fewer beds but admissions are still high
There were almost 16.4 million admissions to hospital between April 2022 to March 2023 in England. The number of admissions has recovered somewhat since the drop in year 2020/21. The busiest hospital trust in England by admissions in the year 2022/23 was the University Hospitals Birmingham Foundation Trust with over 333 thousand admissions. The average length of stay in hospitals in the UK in 2021 for acute care was seven days.
Accident and Emergency
In the first quarter of 2023/24, A&E in England received around 6.5 million attendees. The number of attendances has been creeping upwards since 2012. Around 2.4 percent of people attending A&E in the last year were diagnosed with an upper respiratory condition, followed by 1.8 percent with a lower respiratory tract infection.

In 2023, there were nearly 11 thousand hospitals in Columbia, the highest number among OECD countries, followed by 8,156 hospitals in Japan. If only general hospitals were counted (excluding mental health hospitals and other specialized hospitals), Japan had the most number of general hospitals among OECD countries worldwide. Most countries reported hospitals numbers similar to or lower than the previous year. Meanwhile, Mexico, South Korea and the Netherlands all reported more hospitals than last year.

Over the five years to 2025-26, hospitals' revenue is expected to grow at a compound annual rate of 0.4% to £127.4 billion. Hospital services are currently being stretched to the limit as they struggle to navigate financial constraints and workforce shortages, while appointment waiting times remain high. Hospitals still face long elective backlogs, reaching 7.36 million in March 2025, according to NHS England. However, the growth in private hospitals is fuelling industry revenue as patients are fed up waiting for treatment. Parallel to this, the government raised funding for the NHS in 2025-26, announcing a £29 billion real-terms funding increase in June 2025, supporting modest industry revenue growth. Industry revenue is projected to grow by 3.5% in 2025-26. Hospitals contended with stagnant real-term funding growth in 2022-23, exacerbated by inflationary pressures and increasing demand for healthcare services due to a growing and ageing population. In March 2025, the government announced plans to abolish NHS England, in a move to remove administrative hurdles it feels are preventing improvements in the hospital sector. It will also reduce costs, helping the industry lift profitability. Hospitals have been pressured to manage costs while dealing with a workforce crisis, highlighted by dependency on temporary staff to maintain safe staffing levels. Revenue is estimated to climb at a compound annual rate of 1.9% over the five years through 2030-31 to £140 billion. Hospitals’ performance will depend on how much funding is available for an already overburdened institution. The Labour government is supporting the continuation of the New Hospitals Programme, which will build 40 new hospitals and help ease capacity constraints. However, short-term problems still persist and international recruitment will become more of a challenge as global healthcare systems grapple with their own workforce shortages. As part of the NHS's Long-term Workforce Plan, medical places will rise to 15,000 by 2030-31. This will help mitigate against projected shortfalls in the domestic workforce supply. Embracing technological advancements and digitisation, like virtual wards, will be key to improving efficiency and patient care, with planned capital funding to transform medical technology.

Information on who can access free tests has been published by UKHSA. Changes to patient testing in the NHS in England have also been published by NHS England. Deaths data Data on COVID-19 associated deaths in England are produced by UKHSA from multiple sources linked to confirmed case data. Deaths are only included if the deceased had a positive test for COVID-19 and died within 28 days of the first positive test. Postcode of residence for deaths is collected at the time of testing. This is supplemented, where available, with information from ONS mortality records, Health Protection Team reports and NHS Digital Patient Demographic Service records. Hospital admissions data UKHSA publish the daily total number of patients admitted to hospital, patients in hospital and patients in beds which can deliver mechanical ventilation with COVID-19. In England this includes COVID-19 patients being treated in NHS acute hospitals, mental health and learning disability trusts, and independent service providers commissioned by the NHS. Vaccination data UKHSA publish the number of people who have received a COVID-19 vaccination, by day on which the vaccine was administered. Data are reported daily and can be updated for historical dates as vaccinations given are recorded on the relevant system. Therefore, data for recent dates may be incomplete. Vaccinations that were carried out in England are reported in the National Immunisation Management Service which is the system of record for the vaccination programme in England. Only people aged 12 and over who have an NHS number and are currently alive are included. Age is defined as a person's age at 31 August 2021. The data includes counts of vaccinations by age band, dose, region, and local authority. Additional analysis of the vaccine roll out in London can be found here. ONS population estimates The counts of vaccines given has been converted to percentage of the population vaccinated using the ONS 2020 mid-year population estimates. This is a different population estimate to that used on the UK Coronavirus Dashboard for sub-national data. The UK Coronavirus Dashboard uses people aged 16 and over in the National Immunisation Management Service (NIMS), which is based on GP registrations. In more urban areas like London, NIMS is likely to give an overestimate of the population due to increased population mobility increasing the likelihood duplicate or out of date GP records. Due to the differences in population estimates the percentage of the population vaccinated given here will be higher than the figures included for London on the UK Coronavirus Dashboard. This compares with 40 and 3 for the previous week. A total of 306 deaths in hospitals of patients who had tested positive for COVID-19 and 27 where COVID-19 was mentioned on the death certificate were announced for England as whole. This compares with 301 and 26 for the previous week. The total number of COVID-19 deaths reported in London hospitals of patients who had tested positive for COVID-19 is now 19,102. The total number of deaths in London hospitals where COVID-19 was mentioned on the death certificate is now 1,590. This compares to figures of 119,237 and 8,197 for English hospitals as a whole. Due to the delay between death occurrence and reporting, the estimated number of deaths to this point will be revised upwards over coming days These figures do not include deaths that occurred outside of hospitals. Delays in reporting NHS provide the following guidance regarding the delay between occurrence and reporting of deaths: Confirmation of COVID-19 diagnosis, death notification and reporting in central figures can take up to several days and the hospitals providing the data are under significant operational pressure. This means that the totals reported at 5pm on each day may not include all deaths that occurred on that day or on recent prior days. The data published by NHS England for reporting periods from April 1st onward includes both date of occurrence and date of reporting and so it is possible to illustrate the distribution of these reporting delays. This data shows that approximately 10% of COVID-19 deaths occurring in London hospitals are included in the reporting period ending on the same day, and that approximately two-thirds of deaths were reported by two days after the date of occurrence. Deaths outside of hospitals The data published by NHS England does not include deaths that occur outside of hospitals, i.e. those in homes, hospices, and care homes. ONS have published data for deaths by place of occurrence. This shows that, up to 05 August, 79% of deaths in London recorded as involving COVID-19 occurred in hospitals (this compares with 44% for all causes of death). This would suggest that the NHS England data may underestimate overall deaths from COVID-19 by around 20%. Comparison of data sources Note on data sources NHS England provides numbers of patients who have died in hospitals in England and had tested positive for COVID-19, and from 25 April, the number of patients where COVID-19 is mentioned on the death certificate and no positive COVID-19 test result was received. Figures are updated each day at 2pm with deaths reported up to 5pm the previous day. There is a delay between the occurrence of a death to it being captured in the daily reporting. The data can be presented both as reported deaths by day and death occurrences by day. Reported occurrences for recent days should be considered incomplete as likely to be revised upwards as more data becomes available. The location of a death reflects the location of the hospital in which it occurred. Source: NHS England COVID-19 Daily Deaths The Office for National Statistics publishes deaths for England and Wales by the week in which they were registered. Due to the delay between the occurrence of a death and its registration, many deaths that occur in a given week will appear in the data for a subsequent week. For 2018, ONS estimated that 74% of deaths were registered within seven days. Additional delays in registration can occur over public holidays, with significant changes in numbers being observable over Easter and Christmas. The location of a death reflects the usual residence of the deceased. There are some differences in total numbers reported for different geographical levels. The figures published at the local authority level have been used in this analysis. The data is updated each Tuesday at 9.30am with data for the week ending eleven days prior. For the 2020 series, ONS has included the number of deaths where coronavirus (COVID-19) was mentioned on the death certificate. This data includes deaths for all places of occurrence. The ONS started publishing deaths in care homes notified to the Care Quality Commission on 28th April for local authorities in England by date of notification. On January 12, 2021, over 4.5 thousand individuals in the UK were admitted to hospital with coronavirus (COVID-19), the highest single amount since the start of the pandemic. The daily hospital cases started to rise significantly at the end of 2020 and into January 2021, however since then the number of hospitalizations fell dramatically as the UK managed to vaccinate millions against COVID-19. Overall, since the pandemic started around 994 thousand people in the UK have been hospitalized with the virus.

It contains a count of Finished Consultant Episodes (FCEs) where a procedure for urogynaecological prolapse or stress urinary incontinence using tape or mesh has been recorded during the April 2021 to March 2022 period. Please Note: A summary of information relating to procedures for the treatment of Stress Urinary Incontinence is published here for transparency and scrutiny. Follow up is taking place with individual Trusts to confirm that specific treatment is as described for activity occurring since April 2021. This will lead to more accurate information on these procedures that occurred since April 2021 being being available in the future. In collating this information, it has already become clear that some Trusts mis-coded these procedures in Commissioning Data Set return used to produce these statistics. Alongside this the clinical coding guidance has been refined to enable more accurate identification of specific treatments. The data published here has been published for transparency purposes. However, for these reasons small numbers reported on treatments for this condition should be used as a starting point for further investigation rather than a definitive view.

The rate of delayed transfers of care from all NHS hospitals per 100,000 population aged 18+. A delayed transfer of care occurs when a patient is ready for transfer from a hospital bed, but is still occupying such a bed. A patient is ready for transfer when: [a] a clinical decision has been made that the patient is ready for transfer AND; [b] a multi-disciplinary team decision has been made that the patient is ready for transfer AND; [c] the patient is safe to discharge/transfer. This therefore measures the ability of the whole system to ensure appropriate discharge for the whole population passing through hospital and is an indicator of the effectiveness of the interface between health and social care services.

This is a publication on maternity activity in English NHS hospitals. This report examines data relating to delivery and birth episodes in 2021-22, and the booking appointments for these deliveries. This annual publication covers the financial year ending March 2022. Data is included from both the Hospital Episodes Statistics (HES) data warehouse and the Maternity Services Data Set (MSDS). HES contains records of all admissions, appointments and attendances for patients admitted to NHS hospitals in England. The HES data used in this publication are called 'delivery episodes'. The MSDS collects records of each stage of the maternity service care pathway in NHS-funded maternity services, and includes information not recorded in HES. The MSDS is a maturing, national-level dataset. In April 2019 the MSDS transitioned to a new version of the dataset. This version, MSDS v2.0, is an update that introduced a new structure and content - including clinical terminology, in order to meet current clinical practice and incorporate new requirements. It is designed to meet requirements that resulted from the National Maternity Review, which led to the publication of the Better Births report in February 2016. This is the third publication of data from MSDS v2.0 and data from 2019-20 onwards is not directly comparable to data from previous years. This publication shows the number of HES delivery episodes during the period, with a number of breakdowns including by method of onset of labour, delivery method and place of delivery. It also shows the number of MSDS deliveries recorded during the period, with breakdowns including the baby's first feed type, birthweight, place of birth, and breastfeeding activity; and the mothers' ethnicity and age at booking. There is also data available in a separate file on breastfeeding at 6 to 8 weeks. The count of Total Babies includes both live and still births, and previous changes to how Total Babies and Total Deliveries were calculated means that comparisons between 2019-20 MSDS data and later years should be made with care. The MethodfDelivery measure counting babies has been replaced by the DeliveryMethodBabyGroup measure which counts deliveries, and the smoking at booking and folic acid status measures have been renamed - these changes have been made to better align this annual publication with the Maternity Services Monthly Statistics publication. Information on how all measures are constructed can be found in the HES Metadata and MSDS Metadata files provided below. In this publication we have also included an interactive Power BI dashboard to enable users to explore key NHS Maternity Statistics measures. The purpose of this publication is to inform and support strategic and policy-led processes for the benefit of patient care. This report will also be of interest to researchers, journalists and members of the public interested in NHS hospital activity in England.
