A collection of personal information about the year on year winner of the Tour de France from 1903 to the most recent tour. Basic information is also included on each Tour. Information is collated from www.procyclingstats.com and personal Wikipedia entries about the rider.

The Tour de France is an annual men's multiple stage bicycle race primarily held in France, while also occasionally passing through nearby countries. Like the other Grand Tours (the Giro d'Italia and the Vuelta a España), it consists of 21 day-long stages over the course of 23 days. It has been described as "the world’s most prestigious and most difficult bicycle race".

Miguel Induráin, with five consecutive victories between 1991 and 1995, is the Spanish cyclist who had accummulated more Tour de France victories as of 2023. The Spaniard who had won the famous French competition most recently was Alberto Contador in 2009.

Context

As of now the race of Tour De France is traveling around France, and different riders have been doing so for many years. I wanted to explore the history of Tour De France from a data perspective. That was my motivation for gathering this dataset.

Content

The dataset contains 2236 stages over 8 different variables:

• Stage - The stage number of the stage in the respective year.
• Date - Self explanatory. The date ranges from 1st of July 1903 to 23rd of July 2017.
• Distance - The distance in km of the stage.
• Origin - The name of the city for which the stage starts.
• Destination - The name of the city for which the stage ends.
• Type - The type of the stage. There are 18 different stages. Some very similar.
• Winner - The name of the winner of the stage.
• Winner_Country - The country of the winner.

I have answer questions of my own in my kernel. There are still lots of questions to answered. Further, one can expand the dataset in many ways.

The Tour de France is a world-famous cycle race that took place for the first time in 1903. Its route crosses France and even passes occasionally into some neighboring countries. Also known as the "Big Loop", the Tour de France is one of the biggest events in the world of cycling. A ********* survey revealed Julian Alaphilippe was presumed to be the most likely rider to win the competition in France.

The dataset includes the entire history of the Tour De France since its origin in 1903.

The content includes data on the individual winners and their country of origin, team winners, number of group stages, length of the Tour in its entirety, and more.

The data was originally discovered as a public practice set through Tableau Public.

This graph represents the opinion of French cycling fans in 2017 on the French rider who has most marked the Tour de France. According to more than ********* of the respondents, the rider Bernard Hinault had the most marked this competition. Indeed, Bernard Hinault was one of the cyclists who won the most Tour de France in 2016 , with **** wins.

As of 2024, Belgium's Eddy Merckx had spent more time in the yellow jersey at the Tour de France than any other rider, with ** days in total. The iconic jersey is worn by the leader of the race.

In 2024, the winner of the Tour de France, Tadej Pogačar, maintained an average speed of around ***** kilometers per hour. The Slovenian cyclist also won the famous event in 2021 with an average speed of ***** kilometers per hour.

Context

A Breakaway is an integral part of a cycle road race stage. They are interesting, they keep riders alert and viewers engaged. A typical Breakaway is a bunch of riders attacking the peloton i.e. main bunch of riders in the early part of the stage race. These breakaway riders then try to establish a time gap between them and the main Peloton and try to maintain this gap till the end so that the stage winner is from this breakaway. Most of the time these breakway riders are caught by the peloton but some times this breakaway or few riders from the breakaway survive and eventually one of them wins the stage.

The training data consist of data from the stages of 2014, 2015 & 2016 Grand tours(Giro, Tour de France(TDF), Vuelta) and we have two test data, first 2017 Giro stages which was held in May for which we have actual result so that we can compare with our prediction and second 2017 TDF which is in progress till July 23 2017.

NOTE:- Time Trail Stages are excluded since there are no Breakaway in these stages.

The training data( GT_stage_data) consist of 11 variables and 169 observations. variables are stage distance in Km, elevation in meters i.e height from sea level at start and end points of the stage, also maximum and minimum elevation in the race. Then there are 5 categories of climbs in the race, Cat 4 climb is the easiest and HC climb is the hardest. The last column is the Breakaway_win which has the actual result of the stage, whether the stage was won by the rider in the breakaway(i.e 1 ) or not (i.e 0). The test data (2017_Giro_stages and 2017_TDF stages) also have same variables with additional Stages column at the start for stage number reference. 2017_TDF stages test data does not have Breakaway_win column since 2017 tour is in progess.

Traditionally, the race finishes in Madrid, but the route changes annually. Occasionally, the Vuelta starts and passes through international countries, too. In 2020, the 75th edition of the Vuelta was supposed to start in Utrecht, Netherlands, on August 14. However, due to the impact of the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, the race has been postponed to autumn 2020.
