In 2024, the total contribution of travel and tourism to the global gross domestic product (GDP) amounted to **** trillion U.S. dollars. This figure, which includes the direct, indirect, and induced impact of the global travel and tourism market, represented an increase in total contribution to GDP of *** percent over 2019. As forecast, the total contribution of the travel and tourism sector to the global GDP was expected to reach **** trillion U.S. dollars in 2025. Which countries record the highest travel and tourism contribution to GDP? GDP is the total value of all goods and services produced in a country in a year. It is considered an important indicator of a country's economic strength, and a positive change in GDP is a sign of economic growth. Both before and after the impact of COVID-19, the United States and China were by far the leading travel markets based on the total contribution of travel and tourism to GDP, followed by Germany, Japan, and the United Kingdom. What are the most visited countries in the world? In 2023, France was the country with the highest number of international tourist arrivals worldwide, welcoming 100 million international visitors. While the United States reported the third-highest number of inbound tourist arrivals that year, it was the destination with the highest international tourism receipts worldwide, ranking ahead of Spain and the United Kingdom.

    Description

The total contribution of travel and tourism to South Korea’s GDP amounted to around 81 trillion South Korean won in 2017. This number includes direct, indirect, as well as induced contributions. The value decreased in 2017 due to the decrease in visitor arrivals that year.

Importance of tourists from Mainland China

After a peak in 2016, the number of visitors from Mainland China to South Korea plunged the following year, due to political tension between the two countries. The tensions led to Beijing ordering travel companies to stop selling group tours to South Korea. Since Chinese tourists made up for almost half of all visitor arrivals to South Korea, this had a notable impact on the otherwise steadily growing tourism industry. The number of visitors from Mainland China started to grow again in 2018.

    Hallyu boosts the industry

Hallyu, also known as the “Korean wave” is a common term referring to the South Korean popular culture, including music, TV shows, and movies. With South Korean popular culture gaining popularity around the globe, the number of visitors to the countries grows as well. For example, after the TV drama Winter Sonata gained popularity overseas in 2002, the number of foreign visitors to its rural filming location Nami Island started to grow. The drama is widely considered to be the start of Hallyu throughout worldwide. Another example is the Korean pop boy band BTS, which is currently considered as the biggest boy band in the world. In 2018, the Seoul Metropolitan Government gave credit to the band for boosting the tourism industry.

    Description

Abstract This paper analyzes the economic impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on a small tourism dependent open economy. The lockdown affected both the demand side and the supply side of the economy, as production of goods and services dramatically dropped due to firms’ shutdowns, broken supply chains, or bankruptcies, and aggregate demand diminished due to lower consumer confidence and investment cutbacks, accompanied by a dramatic fall in international tourism demand, in particular due to travel restrictions. We look on these supply and demand changes through the lens of a macroeconomic model of a small open economy, comprising an industrial and a tourism sector. For this purpose, we modify Schubert’s (2013) model by introducing a multiple shock which reflects (i) reduced sectoral productivities due to, e.g., broken supply chains, (ii) a drop in employment due to firms’ lockdowns, and (iii) a sharp decline in international tourism demand. We find that the multiple shock leads to an immediate drop in GDP and a boost of the short-run unemployment rate, followed by a gradual transition back to steady state. The adverse effects on the tourism sector are the more severe the slower international tourism demand reverts to pre-crisis levels, but they do not strongly spill over to the industrial sector. Furthermore, even if international tourism demand recovers quickly, the effects on the industrial sector barely change. The length of the industrial sector’s recovery basically depends on the speed of restoring its sectoral productivity rather than on international tourism demand. The reason for this result can be found in the absorbing effect of the relative price of tourism services in terms of the industrial good.

    Description

As a new engine for the implementation of the strategy of“ecological protection and high-quality development of the Yellow River Basin”, tourism economy plays a pivotal role in the process of regional green development. This paper uses the spatial analysis method to analyze the spatial and temporal pattern of tourism economy and urban green development efficiency in the Yellow River Basin, and explores the impact of tourism economy on urban green development and spatial spillover effects with the help of mediating effect model and spatial Durbin model. The results show that:①Tourism economy and urban green development are characterized by“high agglomeration and low agglomeration”in space, and there are significant path-dependence effect and Matthew effect.②Tourism economy has a good green hair effect, and through the government's ecological governance effectiveness, industrial structure rationalization, environmental regulation level and other elements of the intermediary effect to play an effective way to enhance the level of urban green development.③The tourism economy has a significant positive contribution to the improvement of the level of urban green development, and there is a certain“spatial mismatch”between the direct and indirect effects.④The influence effect of tourism economy on urban green development is characterized by obvious regional heterogeneity, and the degree of influence is upstream>middlestream>downstream, while the upstream area has a negative spillover effect. This paper systematically reveals the impact of tourism economy on the green development of cities in the Yellow River Basin from the multi-dimensional perspectives of intrinsic mechanism, pattern evolution and spatial effect, and provides theoretical support and practical basis for promoting the integration of culture and tourism and ecological synergistic development in the basin, which is of important application value and policy reference significance.

    Night Tourism Market Outlook

According to our latest research, the global Night Tourism market size reached USD 39.2 billion in 2024, reflecting the sectorÂ’s robust expansion. The market is projected to grow at a CAGR of 8.7% from 2025 to 2033, reaching an estimated USD 83.3 billion by the end of the forecast period. The primary growth factor fueling this increase is the rising consumer demand for unique travel experiences, especially those that leverage the vibrancy and cultural richness of nighttime activities.

The growth of the Night Tourism market is significantly driven by the evolving preferences of travelers seeking immersive and unconventional experiences beyond traditional daytime attractions. Urbanization and the proliferation of 24-hour economies have led cities and tourist destinations to develop a diverse array of nighttime offerings such as cultural performances, illuminated monuments, night markets, and themed festivals. These attractions not only extend the hours of tourist engagement but also contribute to higher revenue generation for local businesses and municipalities. The increasing adoption of digital platforms and social media has further amplified the visibility of night tourism, encouraging more travelers to explore destinations after dark and share their experiences, thus creating a virtuous cycle of demand and innovation within the sector.

Another key growth factor is the strategic investment by governments and tourism boards in developing safe, accessible, and engaging nighttime environments. Cities across the globe are prioritizing the enhancement of public infrastructure, safety measures, and transportation networks to facilitate seamless night tourism experiences. Initiatives such as night-time economy task forces, extended public transport hours, and dedicated night-time events have been instrumental in attracting both domestic and international visitors. Additionally, collaborations between public and private sectors have resulted in curated nighttime itineraries, guided tours, and exclusive experiences that cater to diverse interests, from culinary adventures and adventure tourism to cultural immersion and eco-tourism. These efforts are not only boosting tourist footfall but also supporting local economies by creating jobs and promoting sustainable tourism practices.

Technological advancements and the growing influence of online travel agencies (OTAs) have also played a pivotal role in the expansion of the Night Tourism market. The ease of discovering, booking, and customizing night-time activities through digital platforms has democratized access to unique experiences and empowered travelers across different age groups and demographics. The integration of augmented reality (AR), virtual reality (VR), and smart city solutions has further enhanced the appeal of night tourism, enabling personalized and interactive engagements. As consumer awareness of safety and sustainability grows, technology is also being leveraged to provide real-time information on crowd density, weather conditions, and security, thereby enhancing the overall visitor experience and driving market growth.

Regionally, Asia Pacific has emerged as the fastest-growing market for night tourism, driven by the regionÂ’s dynamic urban centers, rich cultural heritage, and thriving nightlife economies. Countries such as China, Japan, South Korea, and Thailand are at the forefront of this trend, investing heavily in night-time infrastructure and promotional campaigns. Europe and North America continue to hold substantial market shares, leveraging their established tourism ecosystems and diverse offerings. Meanwhile, Latin America and the Middle East & Africa are witnessing increasing interest in night tourism, fueled by rising disposable incomes, urbanization, and efforts to diversify tourism portfolios. The global outlook for the night tourism market remains highly optimistic, with ample opportunities for stakeholders to innovate and capitalize on evolving consumer preferences.

Urban Tourism is an integral part of the night tourism market, as cities around the world continue to evolve into vibrant hubs of cultural and social activity. The rise of urban tourism has been fueled by the desire of travelers to experience the unique offerings of metropolitan areas after dark. From bustling nightlife districts to illumina

    Description

The tourism industry is ever-evolving in nature, as it operates in a global marketplace that has become progressively global and offers great potential due to technological advances. The tourism industry faces challenges in accurately forecasting economic impacts and understanding visitor patterns that rapid global changes. Motivated by these needs, this research introduces the Tourism Variational Recurrent Neural Network (TourVaRNN), aiming to enhance the tourism industry by predicting economic impacts and visitor behaviors for effective marketing strategies through advanced Deep Learning (DL) techniques. The research applies a variational recurrent neural network for enhancing tourism demands and model the complex temporal dependencies within tourism data. The proposed TourVaRNN integrates variational autoencoders to capture latent variables representing visitor preferences and spending habits, while recurrent neural networks model complex temporal dependencies in tourism data. Marketing campaigns in the tourism sector can be fine-tuned through visitor segmentation, which seeks to comprehend and classify visitors according to their demographics, preferences, and behaviors. The model employs robust forecasting of economic impacts, visitor spending patterns, and behavior while accounting for uncertainty through variational inference. The implementation uses Python language on a tourism dataset comprising necessary attributes like visitor numbers, days, spending patterns, employment, international tourism samples over a specific region, and a diverse age group analyzed over a year. The proposed method is evaluated in terms of performance metrics such as economic impact assessment, visitor segmentation efficiency, inference time analysis, and budget allocation utilization for effective economic and marketing strategy analysis in the tourism industry. TourVaRNN’s improved segmentation efficiency of 15.7 percent allows for more targeted marketing, increasing engagement with visitors and income. Decisions may be made in real-time, improving operational efficiency in tourism management, thanks to a 17.5% reduction in inference time (to 40 ms). The most efficient use of funds is guaranteed by a 13.4% rise in budget allocation utilization, leading to maximum economic benefits.

    Description

The positive impact of tourism on the economy of countries and their increasing commitment to this practice has led to numerous studies in the literature, from the emergence of the TLGH at the beginning of the century to the present day. However, destinations are no strangers to the negative externalities generated by tourism. These negative externalities respond to a harmful impact on the environment, which, together with the increasing concern of governments for the environment, has also aroused the interest of the research field. Therefore, this study, using a technique that is not widely used, focuses on the analysis of tourism, economic growth and the environment in those countries that have been part of the top 10 tourism countries during the period 1995-2023. The analysis reveals a variety of causality results. Finally, policy recommendations for improvement are made on the basis of these results

Tourism Satellite Account Analytics Market Outlook

According to our latest research, the global Tourism Satellite Account Analytics market size reached USD 1.87 billion in 2024 and is anticipated to grow at a robust CAGR of 12.4% during the forecast period, reaching a projected value of USD 5.36 billion by 2033. This impressive growth trajectory is primarily driven by the increasing demand for actionable insights into tourism’s economic impact, the rising need for data-driven policy formulation, and the digitalization of tourism management systems worldwide. As per our latest research, the market continues to benefit from heightened government focus on sustainable tourism and the proliferation of advanced analytics solutions tailored to the needs of tourism stakeholders.

One of the primary growth factors fueling the expansion of the Tourism Satellite Account Analytics market is the global tourism sector’s ongoing digital transformation. As tourism destinations compete for visitors and investment, the necessity for accurate, real-time data has never been greater. The integration of big data, artificial intelligence, and machine learning technologies into satellite account analytics platforms enables stakeholders to extract granular insights into tourist behavior, expenditure patterns, and regional economic contributions. Additionally, the increasing adoption of smart tourism initiatives and the proliferation of digital touchpoints across the travel ecosystem are generating vast data sets, which further underscores the need for sophisticated analytics solutions. This digital shift is empowering tourism authorities and businesses to make informed decisions, optimize resource allocation, and tailor offerings to evolving traveler preferences.

Another significant driver is the growing emphasis on evidence-based policy formulation and performance monitoring by government agencies and tourism boards. With the tourism industry’s contribution to GDP and employment becoming a critical metric for economic planning, governments globally are investing in advanced analytics tools to capture, analyze, and report tourism’s direct and indirect impacts. Tourism Satellite Account Analytics platforms provide a standardized methodology for assessing the sector’s economic footprint, enabling policymakers to design targeted interventions, evaluate the efficacy of marketing campaigns, and monitor the sustainability of tourism growth. This trend is particularly pronounced in regions where tourism is a cornerstone of the economy, such as Asia Pacific, Europe, and parts of the Middle East, driving sustained demand for analytics solutions.

Furthermore, the rising complexity of the tourism value chain and the diversification of tourism products have accentuated the need for comprehensive analytics. Travel and hospitality companies, research organizations, and destination management entities are increasingly leveraging Tourism Satellite Account Analytics to measure performance, benchmark against competitors, and identify emerging trends. The integration of these analytics platforms with customer relationship management (CRM) systems, booking engines, and social media monitoring tools allows stakeholders to gain a 360-degree view of the tourism landscape. This holistic approach not only enhances operational efficiency but also supports the development of innovative products and experiences tailored to niche market segments. As competition intensifies and traveler expectations evolve, the ability to harness actionable insights from satellite account analytics will be a key differentiator for industry players.

From a regional perspective, the Asia Pacific region is emerging as a powerhouse in the Tourism Satellite Account Analytics market, driven by rapid tourism growth, significant investments in digital infrastructure, and supportive government initiatives. North America and Europe continue to lead in terms of technology adoption and market maturity, while Latin America and the Middle East & Africa are witnessing accelerating uptake as tourism becomes increasingly central to their economic diversification strategies. The regional dynamics are further shaped by varying levels of digital readiness, regulatory frameworks, and the degree of collaboration between public and private sector stakeholders. As the market evolves, regional leaders are expected to set benchmarks in analytics-driven tourism management, influencing global best practices and standards.

Tourism Satellite Account Analytics Market Outlook

According to our latest research, the global Tourism Satellite Account (TSA) Analytics market size reached USD 1.92 billion in 2024, reflecting a robust expansion driven by increasing demand for data-driven tourism management and policy formulation. The market is expected to grow at a CAGR of 11.3% during the forecast period, reaching an estimated USD 5.09 billion by 2033. This strong growth trajectory is primarily fueled by the rising adoption of advanced analytics solutions to evaluate tourism’s economic impact, optimize resource allocation, and support evidence-based decision-making across both public and private sectors.

A key growth factor for the Tourism Satellite Account Analytics market is the global shift towards digital transformation within the tourism industry. As stakeholders recognize the necessity of accurate, real-time insights into tourism flows, spending patterns, and sectoral contributions to GDP, the demand for robust analytics platforms has surged. Governments and tourism boards are increasingly leveraging TSA analytics to inform strategic planning, assess the effectiveness of marketing campaigns, and monitor the sustainability of tourism activities. Furthermore, the integration of big data, artificial intelligence, and machine learning into TSA solutions is enabling deeper, more granular analysis, empowering organizations to uncover actionable insights that drive competitive advantage and policy innovation.

Another significant driver is the growing emphasis on sustainable tourism and the need for comprehensive measurement frameworks. With the tourism sector facing mounting pressure to balance economic growth with environmental preservation and social inclusion, TSA analytics provide a standardized methodology for quantifying tourism’s multifaceted impacts. This enables policymakers to design targeted interventions, track progress towards sustainability goals, and justify investments in infrastructure and community development. The increasing availability of high-quality, disaggregated data from sources such as mobile devices, payment systems, and social media further enhances the precision and relevance of TSA analytics, fostering greater stakeholder engagement and accountability.

Additionally, the proliferation of cloud-based analytics platforms has democratized access to TSA tools, making them more affordable and scalable for a wide range of users, from small tourism boards to multinational hospitality groups. Cloud deployment reduces the need for heavy upfront investments in IT infrastructure while facilitating real-time data sharing and collaboration across geographically dispersed teams. This trend is particularly pronounced in emerging markets, where resource constraints have historically limited the adoption of sophisticated analytics solutions. As a result, cloud-based TSA analytics are catalyzing innovation and driving market penetration in regions with rapidly expanding tourism sectors.

From a regional perspective, Asia Pacific is emerging as the fastest-growing market for Tourism Satellite Account Analytics, fueled by dynamic tourism growth, increasing government investments in digital infrastructure, and a burgeoning middle class with rising disposable incomes. North America and Europe continue to dominate in terms of market share, owing to their mature tourism industries, advanced technological ecosystems, and strong regulatory frameworks supporting transparency and accountability in tourism statistics. Meanwhile, regions such as Latin America and the Middle East & Africa are witnessing accelerated adoption of TSA analytics as they seek to diversify their economies and enhance the resilience of their tourism sectors in the face of global uncertainties.

    Description

To stimulate the regional tourism economy, local governments often seek to increase the number of 5A-rated tourist attractions. However, there have been few analyses examining the economic benefits and influence mechanisms of 5A-rated attraction selection. Using the quality signaling theory and data from 282 prefecture-level cities spanning 2002 to 2019, this study examines the impact of 5A-rated attraction selection on the local tourism economy with the difference-in-differences method. This study’s results demonstrate that the selection of 5A-rated attractions significantly contributes to the growth of the local tourism economy. The robustness test results confirm the validity of this conclusion. A mechanism analysis reveals that 5A-rated attractions positively impact the tourism economy via investments in infrastructure, popularization of informatization, and increased external openness. Furthermore, the study suggests that the effect of 5A-rated attractions is more pronounced in economically underdeveloped regions and low-level cities. The results of this study contribute to the sustainable development of China’s tourism economy and may provide guidance for the establishment of tourism evaluation systems in other international locations in order to foster economic growth.
