    Description

    In 2019, Poland recorded about 35.7 mil, the highest number of arrivals at tourist accommodation in Poland in the observed period. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the number of tourist arrivals decreased to 17.9 million. In 2022, their number increased to 34.2 million.

    Tourism in Poland  The collapse of communism in Poland started a period of tourism development for the country. From this moment Poland became a tourist destination on the travel map of Europe. Its greatest development however has taken place since Poland's accession into the European Union. Openness to the European market has sped up the development of tourism and the hotel industry in Poland. The country lacks some of the values preferred by most tourists to become the tourist center of the region (e.g. lack of warm sea). However, globalization of the Polish economy creates a favorable environment that generates conditions for participation in international tourism and recreation. This is a positive trend that affects the growth of interest in tourism in Poland. Travel expenses have also become an important part of the Polish household budget. In 2019, overall spending on outbound and domestic travel reached its highest value since 2012.

    The development of the Polish tourism and recreation market is related to the participation of foreign visitors. Their number is growing every year, coming mainly from other European countries. The opening of borders within the EU created an advantage for tourism in Poland as it opened the country up to a wider international market. Not only was the quality of their tourist offering noticed but also their competitive prices, which made it an increasingly popular destination among foreigners.  The development of tourism is not only confirmed by the growing number of tourist arrivals but also by the growing number of recreational, health, wellness and spa visits. The increase in tourist traffic and travel expenditure shows that Poland is an attractive place for family, social and shopping visits, by residents and foreign visitors alike.

     Hotel capacity in Poland Over the last few years, the Polish hotel market has maintained a very good economic situation. Year by year, statistics on the number of Polish and foreign tourists and the hotel room occupancy rate confirmed that Poland is a good choice for investors. It is not without reason that the number of hotels and available bedrooms is growing steadily in comparison with previous years.

Poland PL: International Tourism: Number of Arrivals data remains active status in CEIC and is reported by World Bank. The data is categorized under Global Database’s Poland – Table PL.World Bank.WDI: Tourism Statistics. International inbound tourists (overnight visitors) are the number of tourists who travel to a country other than that in which they have their usual residence, but outside their usual environment, for a period not exceeding 12 months and whose main purpose in visiting is other than an activity remunerated from within the country visited. When data on number of tourists are not available, the number of visitors, which includes tourists, same-day visitors, cruise passengers, and crew members, is shown instead. Sources and collection methods for arrivals differ across countries. In some cases data are from border statistics (police, immigration, and the like) and supplemented by border surveys. In other cases data are from tourism accommodation establishments. For some countries number of arrivals is limited to arrivals by air and for others to arrivals staying in hotels. Some countries include arrivals of nationals residing abroad while others do not. Caution should thus be used in comparing arrivals across countries. The data on inbound tourists refer to the number of arrivals, not to the number of people traveling. Thus a person who makes several trips to a country during a given period is counted each time as a new arrival.; ; World Tourism Organization, Yearbook of Tourism Statistics, Compendium of Tourism Statistics and data files.; Gap-filled total;
