It was formed by the merger of the Jefferson County Police Department and the Louisville Division of Police. The Louisville Metro Police Department is headed by Chief Jacquelyn Gwinn-Villaroel. LMPD divides Jefferson County into eight patrol divisions and operates a number of special investigative and support units.

The sign inventory layer consists of points representing traffic control signs on all Metro maintained roadways. The data is the result of field collection surveys by a company called TransMap. The primary use of this layer is to facilitate mapping of sign locations through the various internal viewers and to understand specifiic attributes of each individual sign. It will used by multiple divisions of public works to attach location to work orders for sign maintenance throughout the Louisville Metro area. An applicant submits a site for approval and after review and approval, a permit is issued. Permits are often approved for a window of time occasionally spanning several weeks. It is likely that this data could show an approved permit construction site where construction has either already been completed or has yet to begin. These points are added and removed based upon the time window expressed on the permit and do not reflect the actual condition of work on the ground.
