What is commercial vehicle surveys (CVS)?The CVS is an intercept survey of truck drivers conducted by Ministry of Transportation Ontario. The survey collects comprehensive information about the movement of trucks and commodity on major roads and highways across the province. Information about trip routing, commodity, and vehicle characteristics are sampled from randomly selected trucks on provincial highways, international border crossings, inter-modal ports, and other locations. Method:The CVS is a voluntary survey of truck drivers. Truck drivers are interviewed about their route and the commodities they are carrying.Details about the truck is also collected including axle weights, load distribution, truck configuration and style, and dimensional information as part of the survey. Trucks are randomly selected from highway traffic at more than 200 directional survey sites across the province. The 2012 CVS database contains data from 45,000 interviews conducted between 2010 and 2014.Frequency:

The earliest major survey was conducted in the 1970’s and was repeated approximately every 5 years. In this story map you can learn more about the following: 2. Where surveys are conducted: Locations of the 2012 Commercial Vehicle Survey data collection sites across Ontario.3. Where goods are moving by truck in Ontario: The average daily value of goods from the 2012 CVS is derived from the commodity data collected by the survey and attached to the road network based on commodity and trip origin and destination and routing information. The data has been adjusted to fill gaps in the CVS coverage.4. The impact of trucks on the highway: The Average daily Equivalent Single Axle Load (ESAL) helps pavement engineers design roads to accommodate the impact of truck traffic. ESAL values have been estimated from the axle weights of the trucks surveys in the 2012 CVS.5. Traffic volumes at data collection sites: Average hourly traffic counts by vehicle class are performed at CVS data collection sites to expand the survey data to represent the total truck traffic passing the survey site. The data represents average 2012 traffic volumes.6. Commodity origins and destinations in OntarioAverage daily trip origins summarized by Census Division for major commodity groups.Average daily trips by destination are summarized by Census Division for major commodity groups.Average Daily Commodity origins by Census Division summarized by total commodity weight in kgs.Average Daily Commodity destination by Census Division summarized by total commodity weight in kgs.7. Total Origin and Destination Commodity Values by Census Division: Total daily commodity values from and to the census division. 8. How commodities are moving in the province by weight: Total daily commodity weights in kilograms have been derived from the weight of the major commodity carried by surveyed truck.CVS Data Collection Sites (DCS): The 2012 Commercial Vehicle Survey was conducted at 2012 directional data collection sites across the province. Typical locations include truck inspection stations, international border crossings, truck laybys, rest areas, inter-modal facilities, airports and some municipal roads. Trucks that pass the DCS are randomly stopped by MTO Transportation Enforcement Officers for the survey. Participation is voluntary.Project lead: S.Shan, Developers: W. Klumpenhouwer, Z.Niu

    Description

This data derives from USDA/AMS/Market News/Specialty Crops Program movement data, including only truck and import modes at domestic origins. It includes daily fruit and vegetable refrigerated truck volumes by origin district and commodity (from 2000 to 2010, data is weekly). The Transportation Services Division assigns a broader region to the origins in order to join to refrigerated truck rate and availability data.

The data is collected by AMS market reporters. Truck shipments for all commodities and origins are not available. Those obtainable are reported, but should not be interpreted as representing complete movements of a commodity. Truck shipments are collected at shipping points and include both inter and intrastate movements. They are obtained from various sources, including Federal marketing orders, administrative committees, Federal State inspection service and shippers. Methods used include telephone interviews, faxes, emails, and access to other data sources. The movement data is subject to adjustment as new information becomes available. The latest data will generally be under-reported until revisions are made. Updates to Market News Movement data can happen daily, weekly, monthly, and can happen at any time during the season. The Transportation Services Division updates our data from Market News weekly, including historical revisions.
