This statistic shows the ten biggest cities in Turkey in 2021. At the end of 2021, approximately 15.2 million people lived in Istanbul, making it the biggest city in Turkey.

The urban population of Turkey

The total population of Turkey is on its way to reaching 80 million inhabitants, which is about the same amouint as the population of Germany. Slightly more than half of the Turkish population live in urban areas, with Istanbul being home to the largest portion of this urban population with close to 14 million inhabitants. This is about 20 percent of the entire population.

Istanbul is located at the entrance to the Black Sea, between Europe and Asia. It is attractive to both the people of Turkey as a place to live and work and foreign tourists who take advantage of its cultural and historic center. Due to its attractiveness and its location at the crossroads of the east and the west, the city has been investing in transportation infrastructure to support its strategic location and increasing growth.

Ankara, the capital of Turkey, is the second largest city and home to about 4.5 million people. Izmir is the third largest, with almost 3 million inhabitants. A vast amount of the country’s population is located in these three metropolises.

Population in largest city in Turkey was reported at 16047350 in 2024, according to the World Bank collection of development indicators, compiled from officially recognized sources. Turkey - Population in largest city - actual values, historical data, forecasts and projections were sourced from the World Bank on July of 2025.

In 2023, the major city of Istanbul had almost 15.7 million inhabitants and was the province with the highest population in Turkey. The Turkish capital, Ankara, was the second-largest province, with 5.8 million people residing there in the same year. Characteristics of the Turkish population The population of Turkey has been following a continuously increasing trend for a long time. As of 2023, there were approximately 85.4 million people living in the country. That year, the male population was slightly higher than the female population, amounting to over 42.7 million. When it comes to the gender distribution among the age groups, the gender gap was the highest among the 90-year-olds and older. In 2023, women constituted 70 percent of that age group, whereas the share of men was slightly higher among 0-to-59-year-olds. Structure of the Turkish households The demand for living alone has been increasing in many communities. The case is not much different in Turkey, where the proportion of single households has been on the rise steadily. The share of households with one person peaked in 2023 at nearly 20 percent in the country. However, one-family households still registered the highest number of residents as of 2023, with roughly 16.7 million. In comparison, one-person households counted 5.2 million individuals.

Context

This is a dataset consisting of landmark locations of Turkey, from 3 largest cities; Istanbul, Ankara and Izmir.

This dataset is created for the purpose of a project for machine learning class. We wanted to build a large dataset which will be used for long time, that is why pictures are not just small pictures. The program we used for classifying images can be found on my github.

Content

This data is split in test and train data. %80 of images is split for training, and the rest is for testing. The file is structured like;

The data was collected from flickr, google images, and google places. Google places was a little bit stingy about sharing its data, so we had to find a way around. Most of the scripts which have been used for scrapping the data can be found at my github profile.

Another think to remember is the noise leftover even after so many cleaning process. Sorry for that.

In 2023, Konya became the leading agricultural city in Turkey, outnumbering all the other 80 cities with over 18.8 million hectare of agricultural land. This was followed by Ankara, with approximately 11.6 million hectares of agricultural land.

Overview This comprehensive weather dataset contains daily meteorological observations for 5 major Turkish cities spanning from 2020 to 2025. The data has been systematically collected from official meteorological stations and processed into analysis-ready format, making it ideal for climate analysis, machine learning projects, and research applications.

Data Collection & Processing The dataset was created using a custom Python pipeline that:

• Extracts hourly weather data from Meteostat API
• Aggregates hourly observations into meaningful daily statistics
• Applies statistical functions (mean, max, min, sum, mode) to derive insights
• Ensures data quality through systematic cleaning and validation

• Ankara (Station ID: LTAB0) - Capital city with continental climate

Data Sources Primary data sourced from official meteorological stations via Meteostat API, ensuring reliability and accuracy of observations. Station selection based on data availability, geographic coverage, and measurement quality.

The total number of private hospitals in Turkey amounted to 572 as of 2022. The largest city in the country, Istanbul had 164 private hospitals in the same year. Additionally, Ankara and İzmir followed, reaching a number of 38 and 31 private hospitals, respectively.

In 2023, there were a total of 606 museums operating in Turkey. The largest city of the country, Istanbul, recorded the highest count of museums that year, with 15 public and 78 private museums. The capital city, Ankara, ranked second, counting 8 public and 58 private museums.

The share of urban population in Turkey saw no significant changes in 2023 in comparison to the previous year 2022 and remained at around 77.46 percent. Nevertheless, 2023 still represents a peak in the share in Turkey. A country's urbanization rate refers to the share of the total population living in an urban setting. International comparisons of urbanization rates may be inconsistent, due to discrepancies between definitions of what constitutes an urban center (based on population size, area, or space between dwellings, among others).Find more key insights for the share of urban population in countries like North Macedonia and Montenegro.

The vast majority of the population in the largest city in Turkey, Istanbul, fell in the group of middle-class and above consumers as of 2024. Additionally, about 40 percent of the people were considered high-class consumers.

This statistic presents the number of shopping centers in Turkey as of the first quarter of 2018, by city. Across Turkish cities, Istanbul has the largest number of shopping centers, with 118, followed by Ankara with 34 and Antalya with 17.

As of March 2024, the cost of prime retail rents in Turkey was highest in Istanbul, which equated to 3,246 euros per square meter per year. The lowest annual cost of prime retail rents in Turkey among major cities was Izmir, amounting to nearly 1,200 euros per square meter.

From 2019 to 2023, Istanbul was the leading destination in Turkey based on the volume of international tourist arrivals each year. Overall, inbound travelers in that city totaled over 17 million in 2023, more than tripling compared to 2020, when the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic started, reaching above pre-pandemic figures. Antalya was the second leading tourist destination in 2023, with around 14.8 million inbound arrivals.

Istanbul does not lose its popularity

Istanbul has been an attractive destination with plenty of sights including mosques, churches, museums, palaces, and the Bosphorus Strait, which connects two large continents, Europe, and Asia. This city, which has hosted different civilizations and cultures for centuries, has welcomed millions of foreign and local visitors for years. In 2022, the largest city of Turkey attracted 17.4 million foreign tourists, which was above the pre-coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic level. In line with the high inflation in the country, accommodation prices in Istanbul have generally been increasing. As of October 2023, the average cost for an overnight stay in the city was 117 euros.

Domestic tourism is falling back

Although international tourism in Turkey has been recovering from the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, and its limitations, domestic tourism has fallen behind. Factors such as high inflation, price increases, and the soaring cost of living in the country have also affected local tourism. In 2023, the number of domestic trips was about 22 percent less compared to the peak figures in 2018. In relation to this, the number of overnight stays of domestic travelers has been generally following a negative trend in the last few years. Local tourists recorded roughly 473 million nights at accommodations in 2023, still below the pre-pandemic levels.

As of March 2024, Ankara became the region with the highest house price index (HPI) in Turkey. The largest city in the Republic of Turkey, Istanbul, recorded a house price index (HPI) of about 1015.
