Live streaming is a unique form of media that creates a direct line of interaction between streamers and viewers. While previous research has explored the social motivations of those who stream and watch streams in the gaming community, there is a lack of research that investigates intimate self-disclosure in this context, such as discussing sensitive topics like mental health on platforms such as Twitch.tv. This study aims to explore discussions about mental health in gaming live streams to better understand how people perceive discussions of mental health in this new media context. The context of live streaming is particularly interesting as it facilitates social interactions that are masspersonal in nature: the streamer broadcasts to a larger, mostly unknown audience, but can also interact in a personal way with viewers. In this study, we interviewed Twitch viewers about the streamers they view, how and to what extent they discuss mental health on their channels in relation to gaming, how other viewers reacted to these discussions, and what they think about live streams, gaming-focused or otherwise, as a medium for mental health discussions. Through these interviews, our team was able to establish a baseline of user perception of mental health in gaming communities on Twitch that extends our understanding of how social media and live streaming can be used for mental health conversations. Our first research question unraveled that mental health discussions happen in a variety of ways on Twitch, including during gaming streams, Just Chatting talks, and through the stream chat. Our second research question showed that streamers handle mental health conversations on their channels in a variety of ways. These depend on how they have built their channel, which subsequently impacts how viewers perceive mental health. Lastly, we learned that viewers’ reactions to mental health discussions depend on their motivations for watching the stream such as learning about the game, being entertained, and more. We found that more discussions about mental health on Twitch led to some viewers being more cautious when talking about mental health to show understanding.

The global live game streaming market, encompassing platforms like YouTube Gaming, Twitch, and others, is experiencing robust growth. While precise figures for market size and CAGR are unavailable from the provided context, industry analyses suggest a multi-billion dollar market experiencing double-digit annual growth. This expansion is fueled by several key factors. The increasing popularity of esports and competitive gaming creates a massive audience eager to watch professional and amateur gameplay. The rise of mobile gaming and broader internet access globally further expands the potential viewership and streamer base. Technological advancements, such as improved streaming capabilities and immersive viewing experiences (e.g., virtual reality integration), are also contributing to market growth. Furthermore, the integration of social features, like chat functions and interactive elements, enhances viewer engagement and fosters community building around specific games and streamers. Platforms continuously innovate with features like subscriptions, virtual gifts, and advertising, creating diverse revenue streams and fueling further investment. However, the market also faces challenges. Competition among established platforms and new entrants is fierce, requiring continuous innovation to retain viewers and streamers. Maintaining a high quality streaming experience, particularly in regions with limited internet infrastructure, remains a crucial hurdle. Concerns regarding content moderation, copyright infringement, and the mental health of streamers are also important considerations that impact the market's long-term sustainability. The market is segmented by platform type (e.g., dedicated gaming platforms versus general video platforms), geographic region (with North America and Asia currently dominating), and game genre (with popular titles driving viewership). The future will likely see further consolidation within the industry, alongside a push for greater personalization and niche community building within the streaming landscape.

The video game live streaming market is experiencing explosive growth, fueled by the increasing popularity of esports, the rise of streaming platforms, and the expanding reach of high-speed internet. The market, estimated at $5 billion in 2025, is projected to achieve a Compound Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) of 15% from 2025 to 2033, reaching approximately $15 billion by 2033. Key drivers include the rising number of gamers engaging with live streams for entertainment and esports competition, the continuous improvement of streaming technology enabling higher quality broadcasts and broader accessibility, and the lucrative monetization opportunities for streamers through subscriptions, advertisements, and sponsorships. This growth is further accelerated by the integration of streaming platforms with social media, facilitating community building and content discovery. Major players like Twitch, YouTube Gaming, and Facebook Gaming dominate the market, but emerging platforms and innovative features continue to reshape the competitive landscape. Challenges include maintaining content quality, combating piracy, and managing the potential for negative interactions within online communities. Segmentation is evident across platforms, game genres (e.g., first-person shooters, battle royales, and massively multiplayer online games), and viewer demographics, revealing diverse opportunities for market penetration. The significant growth of the video game live streaming sector is not only driven by the increasing number of viewers but also by the evolving strategies of established and emerging players. While giants like Twitch, YouTube, and Facebook Gaming retain considerable market share, smaller platforms are carving niches by focusing on specific game genres or communities. This fosters innovation in streaming technology, content formats, and monetization models. The integration of mobile streaming technologies further expands the market's reach, making live streaming accessible across various devices and broadening the viewer base. However, concerns regarding content moderation, maintaining platform integrity, and managing the potential for toxic online behavior remain significant hurdles to address for sustainable growth. Future market trends are expected to be influenced by advancements in virtual reality and augmented reality, the integration of AI-powered features, and the ongoing development of more interactive streaming experiences. Geographical expansion, particularly into developing markets with high internet penetration growth, also presents a significant opportunity for future growth.
