The source of the header image is Scott Webb on Unsplash.

    OVERVIEW

The United States Department of Agriculture's Economic Research Service (ERS) estimated average prices for over 150 commonly consumed fruits and vegetables, using 2013, 2016, 2020, and 2022 retail sales data from Circana. Circana obtained this data from a selection of retail establishments across the U.S., including grocery stores, supermarkets, convenience stores, drug stores, and liquor stores.

    See ers.usda.gov for additional documentation.

    LIMITATIONS & SOURCES OF ERROR

    • Coding inconsistencies and market dynamics make this dataset unsuitable for inferring price trends over time.
    • The sample of U.S. retail establishments from which Circana collected data may not be representative of the entire population.
    • Estimates of a product’s inedible portion and weight change from cooking are based on samples of products. Actual amounts will differ for specific products bought by a household (e.g., the actual size of the inedible core of an apple varies between fruits).

    Description

The US Fruit & Vegetable Wholesaling industry is undergoing a transformation driven by changing consumer preferences and market demands. Consumers increasingly prioritize health and environmental concerns, so the demand for organic and locally sourced produce has surged. Retail giants like Whole Foods and Kroger have expanded their regional partnerships, pushing wholesalers to adapt quickly to these new trends. Wholesalers that evolve their sourcing strategies, like Sysco and US Foods, are gaining a competitive edge and securing market positions. However, the shift to organic and local products comes with supply chain challenges and higher costs, compelling wholesalers to optimize logistics to maintain profitability. Industry revenue is shrinking at a CAGR of 0.8% through the end of 2025 to $109.0 billion, including a growth of 1.9% in 2025 alone. Over the past five years, the industry has faced significant hurdles, including supply chain disruptions because of the COVID-19 pandemic, extreme weather events and labor shortages. These challenges have led to price volatility, impacting inventory levels and margins. Rising fuel prices and driver shortages have exacerbated transportation costs, forcing companies like Performance Food Group to implement surcharges. In response, some companies diversify their supplier base and invest in regional distribution centers. Adopting technology, like predictive analytics and automation, has also been crucial in helping wholesalers navigate these disruptions effectively. The next five years will see the adoption of AI and automation to transform wholesale operations. Companies invest in advanced systems to cope with labor shortages and streamline processes, ultimately boosting efficiency. Climate change poses ongoing challenges, with unpredictable weather patterns potentially disrupting produce availability. Wholesalers will need to diversify sourcing regions and adopt climate-resilient storage solutions. Sustainability efforts are expected to become industry standards, with tighter environmental regulations pushing companies to enhance their practices. As consumer demand for convenience grows, wholesalers are likely to invest more in digital platforms and online ordering to stay competitive in an increasingly tech-driven market. Because of these trends, revenue is expected to rise at a CAGR of 2.0% through the end of 2030 to $120.5 billion.

    Description

Canned fruit and vegetable processors often perform countercyclically to the US economy, benefiting during economic uncertainty. During periods of growth, consumers shy away from canned fruit and vegetable products as higher levels of disposable income allow them to trade up to pricier and fresher products. The perception that canned and processed food is less nutritious than fresh and unprocessed food has substantially inhibited industry expansion in recent years, significantly as health consciousness rises. Producers have diversified product lines to include canned goods with zero added sugars and low-sodium or organic ingredients. Still, there is little opportunity for product innovation in canned fruit and vegetable processing, leaving companies to compete on price and quality. Industry-wide revenue has inched downward over the past five years at a CAGR of an estimated 0.4% to reach $51.3 billion in 2025, including a 1.6% revenue drop in 2025 alone. Consumer stockpiling amid the COVID-19 pandemic offset a potentially larger drop in revenue over the five years to 2025 and the organic boom has created an opportunity for fruit and vegetable processors to expand domestically and internationally. Expanding organic food and beverage sales have consistently outpaced most other grocery segments and various new companies are eager to take advantage of this movement. Also, the swelling cost of fruit and vegetables has made canned products relatively less expensive; however, this hasn't helped stave off substitute competition from fresh produce, which has contributed to stagnating profit. Consumers continue to prefer fresh organic food if their wallets permit. Import competition has remained high over the past five years. Still, a devaluation of the US dollar soon may present an opportunity for companies to sell organic products abroad. Emerging markets, like India, are promoting organic farming, which will expand foreign demand for organic canned products. Fruit and vegetable consumption among US consumers has only inched upward over the past five years and is expected to drop over the next five years, mitigating any growth from international markets. Moreover, rising disposable incomes over the next five years will likely have consumers trading up to fresher products. Over the next five years, industry revenue is anticipated to drop at a CAGR of 0.2% to $50.8 billion in 2030.

Market Dynamics of Fruits and Vegetables Market

Key Drivers of Fruits and Vegetables Market

Increasing Consumer Awareness and Demand for Healthy Eating to Increase the Demand Globally

One key driver in the fruits and vegetables market is the rising consumer awareness and demand for healthy eating. As people become more health-conscious, there is a growing preference for natural, nutritious foods like fruits and vegetables. Consumers are seeking products that are free from artificial additives and pesticides, driving the demand for organic and locally sourced produce. This trend is further fueled by the increasing prevalence of lifestyle-related diseases like obesity and diabetes, prompting individuals to adopt healthier diets rich in fruits and vegetables.

Expansion of Retail Channels and Convenience Foods to Propel Market Growth

Another significant driver in the fruits and vegetables market is the expansion of retail channels and the availability of convenience foods. With changing lifestyles and busier schedules, consumers are increasingly looking for convenient food options. This has led to the rise of packaged and pre-cut fruits and vegetables, making it easier for consumers to incorporate these items into their diets. The expansion of retail channels, including supermarkets, hypermarkets, and online grocery platforms, has also made fruits and vegetables more accessible to a wider audience, further driving market growth.

Restraint Factors Of Fruits and Vegetables Market

Seasonal Variability and Supply Chain Challenges to Limit the Sales

One of the key restraints in the fruits and vegetables market is the seasonal variability and associated supply chain challenges. Fruits and vegetables are highly perishable commodities, and their availability fluctuates throughout the year due to factors such as weather conditions, growing seasons, and harvesting cycles. This seasonal variability poses challenges for both producers and retailers in terms of maintaining consistent supply levels and managing inventory effectively. Additionally, transportation and storage of fresh produce can be complex and costly, leading to potential wastage and supply chain inefficiencies.

Key Trends for Fruits and Vegetables Market

The Rising Popularity of Organic and Sustainably Sourced Produce

Consumers are increasingly seeking organic fruits and vegetables that are cultivated without the use of synthetic chemicals or pesticides. This trend signifies heightened environmental awareness and a transition towards sustainable agricultural practices. Retailers and producers are responding by broadening their organic product offerings and acquiring eco-certifications to appeal to environmentally conscious consumers.

Innovation in Packaging and Shelf-Life Extension Technologies

Cutting-edge packaging solutions, including modified atmosphere packaging (MAP) and biodegradable wraps, are enhancing product durability and minimizing food waste. These advancements enable retailers to provide fresher produce while fulfilling consumer demands for convenience and sustainability. Improved shelf-life is especially crucial in mitigating losses throughout global supply chains.
