In November 2023, the Uber Eats app was downloaded roughly 445.3 thousand times in Japan, making it one of the most successful months in terms of downloads in that year. In April 2020, the Uber Eats app was downloaded about 1.63 million times in Japan, setting a record number of downloads during the surveyed period for the app. This coincided with lockdown measures taken in Japan due to the advent of the COVID-19 pandemic.
In April 2023, Glovo boasted approximately three million active users across both Android and iOS devices. Burger King and McDonald's reported 2.8 million and 2.3 million active users, respectively. Conversely, food delivery platforms Uber Eats and Just Eat had fewer than one million users that month.
According to a survey conducted by Rakuten Insight in April 2023, around 93 percent of respondents in China stated that Meituan Waimai was the food delivery app they used the most. Ele.me was another prominent player in China's food delivery app market.
Meituan
Meituan is a Chinese online platform that offers consumer products and retail services, including dining, delivery, and entertainment for residents. In 2015, Meituan merged with Dazhong Dianping, a Tencent-backed O2O service provider that hosts restaurant reviews and offers group buying services. As of 2022, there were nearly 9.3 million active merchants and 678 million transacting users on Meituan.
Meituan expanded its reach into the delivery market with the launch of Meituan Waimai in 2013. In October 2021, Meituan was fined 3.44 billion yuan by China's State Administration for Market Regulation for its “choose one” monopoly behavior in the delivery market.
Ele.me
Founded in 2009, Ele.me mainly targeted college users at first and gradually extended its user base to white-collar workers. While improving its online food ordering system, Ele.me started establishing a self-operated distribution team and increasingly investing in intelligent logistics systems since 2014. In April 2018, Alibaba and Ant Financial jointly acquired Ele.me for 9.5 billion U.S. dollars.
With Douyin and WeChat eyes venturing into food delivery in 2023, the competition in the market will likely be more fierce in the future.
