When asked about "Duration of daily commute", 31 percent of UK respondents answer "15 to 29 minutes". This online survey was conducted in 2024, among 4,032 consumers.
Cars and vans were the most popular mode of transport for commuting purposes in England. In 2019, car and van drivers travelled an average of 782 miles per person per year, roughly three times the distance travelled by those using surface rail as a means of commuting. In Great Britain overall, the car was used by more than two thirds of commuters, by far the majority of those travelling to work. In the past three years, the popularity of the car was unchallenged.
Train commutes the longest
The average commuting time for those travelling via rail was an hour, which suggested that those using rail tended to do so when needing to traverse greater distances. By comparison, the average car commute was 26 minutes long in 2017.
Company cars have greatest annual mileage
The greatest commuting mileage of car drivers was covered by those driving company vehicles. In 2018, a company car user drove nearly four times the distance someone using a private car travelled.
In Great Britain, the longest average commuting time was on national rail trains with more than an hourlong journey, suggesting that trains are the preferred option for longer journeys for getting to work. Unsurprisingly, the shortest time was for walking, with the average commuting time being 15 minutes.

Dataset population: Workplace population
Daytime/workday population
England and Wales (Workday Population)
Workday population is where the usually resident population is re-distributed to their places of work, while those not in work are recorded at their usual residence.
The workday population of an area is defined as all usual residents aged 16 and above who are in employment and whose workplace is in the area, and all other usual residents of any age who are not in employment but are resident in the area. People who work mainly at or from home or do not have a fixed place of work are included in their area of their usual residence. The following population groups are excluded from the workday population of an area:
England and Wales (Workplace Population)
Workplace population is where the usually resident population is re-distributed to their main place of work, but those not working are excluded.
Distance travelled to place of work
The distance in kilometres between a person's residential postcode and their workplace postcode, measured in a straight line.
Derived distances that result in a distance travelled that exceeds 1200km are treated as invalid and a value is imputed. A distance travelled of 0.1km indicates that the workplace postcode is the same as the residential postcode.
Accessible tables and improved quality
As part of the Analysis Function Reproducible Analytical Pipeline Strategy, processes to create all National Travel Survey (NTS) statistics tables have been improved to follow the principles of Reproducible Analytical Pipelines (RAP). This has resulted in improved efficiency and quality of NTS tables and therefore some historical estimates have seen very minor change, at least the fifth decimal place.
All NTS tables have also been redesigned in an accessible format where they can be used by as many people as possible, including people with an impaired vision, motor difficulties, cognitive impairments or learning disabilities and deafness or impaired hearing.
If you wish to provide feedback on these changes then please contact us.

Changes to tables including car mileage data (NTS0901, NTS0904)
Following a user engagement exercise, the presentation of the car mileage estimates has changed for 2023, to include more car types and fuel types (subject to availability of data) and to discontinue providing a private or company car breakdown. These changes have resulted in revisions to the estimates in the backseries. Please see table notes for more details.
Previous versions of these tables (up to 2022) are available.

This statistic provides a comparison of the average amount of time spent travelling to and from paid work or study by both men and women in OECD member countries as well as China, India and South Africa. As of 2016, the average man in China spent 56 minutes per day travelling for work and study while for women the average was 38 minutes.
This spreadsheet summarises of the key travel patterns and trends relating to the TFL network and Airports around London.
Some of the borough level data has been analysed using these interactive charts. Click on the image to open.
The first stack graph shows the spread of mode of travel for each borough. In Kensington and Chelsea over 44 per cent of journeys are made on foot, in Bexley 59 per cent of journeys are in a car/motorcycle, and in Hackney over a 25 per cent of journeys are by bus.
The second graph shows the proportion of all road casualties by road user type and borough in 2010. The City of London has the highest proportion of casualties for pedestrians, and cyclists.

The average spend per day on trips abroad by residents of the United Kingdom (UK) has increased over the period from 2011 to 2019. An average of 69 British pounds was spent per day on visits overseas in 2019. According to the same dataset, the average spend by tourists traveling to the UK was somewhat higher than UK tourists abroad.
The average daily spend by inbound business tourists in the United Kingdom amounted to 186 British pounds in 2023. This denoted a decrease of 11 percent from the previous year. The region from which the highest spenders came was North America, with business travelers spending an average 282 British pounds a day.

This file contains the Standard Area Measurements (SAM) for 2011 travel to work areas (TTWA) in the United Kingdom as at 31 December 2011. All measurements provided are ‘flat’ as they do not take into account variations in relief e.g. mountains and valleys. Measurements are given in hectares (10,000 square metres). Four types of measurements are included: total extent, area to mean high water (coastline), area of inland water and area to mean high water excluding area of inland water (land area). The Eurostat-recommended approach is to use the ‘land area’ measurement to compile population density figures. The TTWAs used to create the Standard Area Measurements were built using Lower Layer Super Output Areas (LSOAs) created by ONS, Datazones (DZs) supplied by the National Records for Scotland and Super Output Areas (SOAs) supplied by Northern Ireland Statistics and Research Agency (NISRA). The DZ and SOA supplied for Scotland and Northern Ireland were clipped to the coastline. This means the extent of the realm and area to mean high water measurements are identical for Scotland and Northern Ireland. The Scottish DZ had some areas of inland water removed although not all, such as Loch Lomond and Loch Ness amongst others. Consequently the area to mean high water measurements are lower than they would otherwise be and the inland water measurements aren't as high as they would otherwise be.Click the Download button to download the file.
