Electricity generated from coal has declined in the United Kingdom. Between 2005 and 2018, figures decreased by approximately 118 terawatt hours. Output from renewable sources has notably increased while coal phased out of the energy supply system.
Summary of some of the key developments in the UK energy system: how energy is produced and used and the way in which energy use influences greenhouse gas emissions.
The construction sector in the United Kingdom was responsible for consuming some 334,000 metric tons of oil equivalent renewable and waste energy in 2018. Renewable energy consumption had notably increased since 1990, when only 7,000 metric tons of renewable energy were used.
This statistic displays the total indigenous production of wind, solar, and hydro energy in the United Kingdom (UK) from 2000 to 2018, in million metric tons of oil equivalent (Mtoe). It shows that indigenous production of energy from these renewables started to increase noticeably from 2010, and by 2018 amounted to 6.49 Mtoe.
The Digest of United Kingdom Energy Statistics (DUKES) is the annual energy statistics publication produced by BEIS. It provides a detailed and comprehensive picture on the production and consumption of individual fuels and of energy as a whole.

This statistic displays the normalized electricity generation from wind the United Kingdom (UK) from 2010 to 2018, in thousand metric tons of oil equivalent. It shows that the electricity generation increased over this period, from 967 thousand metric tons of oil equivalent in 2010 to approximately 4.8 million metric tons of oil equivalent in 2018.
The statistic shows the amount of power generated by Centrica Energy sources in the United Kingdom (UK) from 2013 to 2018, in terawatt hours. 2018 was the only year during the period that the amount of power generated was less than 15 terawatt hours. Nuclear power generation was consistently higher than both thermal and renewable energy.

Renewable energy share (RES) used in gross final electricity consumption in the United Kingdom almost doubled over the years. In 2018, 30.9 percent of the gross final energy consumption for electricity was covered by renewable energy. This is up from 17.8 percent in 2014.
Special feature article from the June 2018 edition of Energy trends statistical publication.
Reports on performance against the Programme for Government target to “Encourage achievement of 20% of electricity consumption from renewable sources by 2015” and the Executive’s Strategic Energy Framework target to achieve 40% of electricity consumption from renewable sources by 2020. The report is published twice per year - in March reporting on the previous calendar year and in June reporting on the 12 month period to the end of March.
Coal amount used to generate electricity in the United Kingdom presented a trend of decline with some oscillation, peaking in 2006 at approximately 36 million metric tons of oil equivalent. From 2007 to 2009, coal volume used declined to roughly 25 million metric tons of oil equivalent and remained stable until 2011. In 2012, coal volume used to generate electricity inclined to nearly 34 million metric tons of oil equivalent. Figures continuously dropped on the following years, reaching 4.34 million metric tons of oil equivalent in 2018.
