    Description

The statistic shows the total population in the United Kingdom from 2015 to 2019, with projections up until 2025. The population grew steadily over this period.

    Population of the United Kingdom

Despite a fertility rate just below the replacement rate, the United Kingdom’s population has been slowly but steadily growing, increasing by an average of 0.6 percent every year since 2002. The age distribution has remained roughly the same for the past ten years or so, with the share of the population over 65 years old seeing a slight increase as the baby boomer generation enters into that age bracket. That share is likely to continue growing slightly, as the United Kingdom has one of the highest life expectancies in the world.

The population of the island nation is predominantly white Christians, but a steady net influx of immigrants, part of a legacy of the wide-reaching former British Empire, has helped diversify the population. One of the largest ethnic minorities in the United Kingdom is that of residents of an Indian background, born either in the UK, India, or in other parts of the world. India itself is experiencing problems with rapid population growth, causing some of its population to leave the country in order to find employment. The United Kingdom’s relatively lower levels of unemployment and the historical connection between the two countries (which has also resulted in family connections between individuals) are likely reasons that make it a popular destination for Indian emigrants.

The population of the United Kingdom in 2024 was estimated to be approximately 69.3 million, with over 9.6 million people living in South East England. London had the next highest population, at almost 9.1 million people, followed by the North West England at 7.7 million. With the UK's population generally concentrated in England, most English regions have larger populations than the constituent countries of Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland, which had populations of 5.5 million, 3.2 million, and 1.9 million respectively. English counties and cities The United Kingdom is a patchwork of various regional units, within England the largest of these are the regions shown here, which show how London, along with the rest of South East England had around 18 million people living there in this year. The next significant regional units in England are the 47 metropolitan and ceremonial counties. After London, the metropolitan counties of the West Midlands, Greater Manchester, and West Yorkshire were the biggest of these counties, due to covering the large urban areas of Birmingham, Manchester, and Leeds respectively. Regional divisions in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland The smaller countries that comprise the United Kingdom each have different local subdivisions. Within Scotland these are called council areas, whereas in Wales the main regional units are called unitary authorities. Scotland's largest Council Area by population is that of Glasgow City at over 650,000, while in Wales, it was the Cardiff Unitary Authority at around 384,000. Northern Ireland, on the other hand, has eleven local government districts, the largest of which is Belfast with a population of approxiamtely 352,000.

    Description

These datasets present annual land and crop areas, livestock populations and agricultural workforce estimates broken down by farm type, size and region. More detailed geographical breakdowns and maps are updated every 3 to 4 years when a larger sample supports the increased level of detail. Longer term comparisons are available via links in the Historical timeseries section at the bottom of this page.

The results are sourced from the annual June Survey of Agriculture and Horticulture. The survey captures data at the farm holding level (historically based on individual farm locations) so most data is presented on this basis. Multiple farm holdings can be owned by a single farm business, so the number of farm holdings has also been aggregated to farm businesses level as a way of estimating the number of overall farming enterprises for England only.

    Farm type and farm size

Key land use & crop areas, livestock populations and agricultural workforce on individual farm holdings in England broken down by farm type or farm size bands and for the UK broken down by farm size bands.

    Farm businesses

Number of farm businesses by farm business type, region and size in England. Individual farm holdings are aggregated to a business level. A farm business comprises the farm holdings which are linked to a business usually, but not always, by a Single Business Identifier (SBI). In most cases, a farm business is made up of a single farm holding, but some businesses are responsible for multiple farm holdings, often in different locations.

    English geographical breakdowns

Key land use & crop areas, livestock populations and agricultural workforce on individual farm holdings in England broken down by various geographical boundaries.

    Description

The GEBCO_2025 Grid is a global continuous terrain model for ocean and land with a spatial resolution of 15 arc seconds. In regions largely outside of the Arctic and Southern Ocean areas, the grid uses as a base Version 2.7 of the SRTM15_plus data set (Tozer et al., 2019). This data set is a fusion of land topography with measured and estimated seafloor topography. Included on top of this base grid are gridded bathymetric data sets developed by the four Regional Centers of The Nippon Foundation-GEBCO Seabed 2030 Project. The GEBCO_2025 Grid represents all data within the 2025 compilation. The compilation of the GEBCO_2025 Grid was carried out at the Seabed 2030 Global Center, hosted at the National Oceanography Centre, UK, with the aim of producing a seamless global terrain model. Outside of Polar regions, the Regional Centers provide their data sets as sparse grids i.e. only grid cells that contain data are populated. These data sets were included on to the base using a 'remove-restore' blending procedure. This is a two-stage process of computing the difference between the new data and the base grid and then gridding the difference and adding the difference back to the existing base grid. The aim is to achieve a smooth transition between the new and base data sets with the minimum of perturbation of the existing base data set. The data sets supplied in the form of complete grids (primarily areas north of 60N and south of 50S) were included using feather blending techniques from GlobalMapper software. The GEBCO_2025 Grid has been developed through the Nippon Foundation-GEBCO Seabed 2030 Project. This is a collaborative project between the Nippon Foundation of Japan and the General Bathymetric Chart of the Oceans (GEBCO). It aims to bring together all available bathymetric data to produce the definitive map of the world ocean floor by 2030 and make it available to all. Funded by the Nippon Foundation, the four Seabed 2030 Regional Centers include the Southern Ocean - hosted at the Alfred Wegener Institute (AWI), Germany; Pacific Ocean - hosted at the National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research (NIWA), New Zealand; Atlantic and Indian Oceans - hosted at the Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory (LDEO), Columbia University, USA; Arctic and North Pacific Oceans - jointly hosted at Stockholm University, Sweden and the Center for Coastal and Ocean Mapping at the University of New Hampshire, USA.
