The first modern publicly traded company was the Dutch East Industry Company, which sold shares to the general public to fund expeditions to Asia. Since then, groups of companies have formed exchanges in which brokers and dealers can come together and make transactions in one space. Stock market indices group companies trading on a given exchange, giving an idea of how they evolve in real time. Appeal of stock ownership Over half of adults in the United States are investing money in the stock market. Market Size statistics on the Live Animal Wholesaling industry in the UK
Facebook
Twitterhttps://www.ibisworld.com/about/termsofuse/https://www.ibisworld.com/about/termsofuse/
The UK live animal wholesaling industry is currently benefitting from buoyant revenue, as sustained high livestock prices, driven by the fallout of the Russia-Ukraine war, have underpinned industry turnover. Global feed and energy market disruption has translated directly into higher auction prices, ensuring that wholesalers who can secure supply or move stock efficiently are seeing top-line gains. Despite this uplift, operating conditions are far from easy. There was a sharp slump in export opportunities, following the UK government’s permanent ban on exports of live cattle, sheep, pigs and goats for slaughter or fattening in 2024. As a result, sales have contracted and competition has intensified within domestic markets, especially for lower-value livestock segments. Meanwhile, abattoir closures and chronic staff shortages have significantly reduced processing capacity, forcing wholesalers to absorb higher transport costs and lengthier holding times for unsold animals. Large national supermarkets have responded by using their considerable purchasing power to squeeze prices further, while direct farm-to-consumer sales and vertical integration by major processors like Cranswick continue to erode the traditional wholesaler’s role. Profit squeezes are exacerbated by volatile feed costs, one of the largest input categories and rising wage bills due to repeated hikes in the National Living Wage. Larger enterprises benefit from direct supply agreements, scale efficiencies and the freedom to invest in digital traceability solutions or advanced logistics. Technology adoption remains focused on compliance and incremental efficiency improvements, with leaders leveraging digital tools for transparency rather than radical transformation. Average profit margins remain tight, as wholesale price gains are outweighed by elevated running costs and competitive pressures. Although some industry players are using forward-buying strategies or integrated planning technologies to manage volatility, sustained cost hikes have hindered more meaningful profitability improvements. Revenue is expected to contract at a compound annual rate of 1.1% over the five years through 2025-26 to £656.6 million, including a drop of 5.4% in 2025-26. Over the five years through 2030-31, revenue is forecast to slump at a compound annual rate of 2.3% to £584 million. However, long-term growth is expected to slow as farm gate prices fall and structural challenges re-emerge. The outlook is shaped by continued regulatory tightening on Live Animal Wholesalers’ impacts on animal health, environmental impact and welfare standards, with major retail buyers expected to further embed sustainability criteria into supply contracts. Farm-to-consumer direct sales and vertical integration among processors are expected to keep competition fierce, preventing a significant rebound in profitability.

This dataset contains the ratio of lower quartile/median house price to lower quartile/median earnings in England This dataset uses the median/lower quartile house price data sourced from ONS House Price Statistics for Small Areas (HPSSA) statistical release for years 2013-2015 and house price data sourced directly from Land Registry prior to 2013. This leads to slight differences in the distribution of affordability ratios before and after 2013 which should be noted if the dataset is used as a time series. It is planned to update the ratios with the HPSSA dataset for all years in the future. The house price data is then compared to the median/lower quartile income data of full time workers from the Annual Survey of Hours and Earnings (ASHE) produced by the ONS. This data was derived from Table 576 and 577, available for download as an Excel spreadsheet from the Live tables page (https://www.gov.uk/government/statistical-data-sets/live-tables-on-housing-market-and-house-prices). More details about the data sources are also available in the link provided.
