TwitterThe consumption of natural gas in the United Kingdom has fluctuated during the period under consideration, dropping to a low of *** exajoules in 2024.Gas central heating Gas is by the far the most common method of heating in the UK, with nearly ** percent of the population using it to heat their homes. However, in 2019 Chancellor Phillip Hammond put forward plans to ban fossil fuel heating systems in new homes built after 2025. The shift from gas central heating to low carbon electric systems such as heat pumps is expected to increase power demand for this sector to approximately 100 terawatt-hours a year by 2050. In 2024, the total electricity demand stood at over *******terawatt hours.Natural gas electricity generation Natural gas plays a vital role in the nation’s electricity generation mix, making up a share of over ***percent in 2023. But projections show this is expected to change in the following decades. Whilst generation is expected to be approximately ** terawatt hours in 2025, by 2035 it is estimated to drop to just ** terawatt hours.

TwitterThe residential and commercial sector accounted for most of the natural gas consumption in the United Kingdom from 2018 to 2024. The residential and commercial sector's natural gas consumption increased from an estimated ** billion cubic meters in 2023 to an estimated ** billion cubic meters in 2024. Meanwhile, the power generation sector was ranked second, with a natural gas consumption of an estimated ***** billion cubic meters in 2024.

TwitterNatural gas consumption for energy use in the United Kingdom amounted to 58.6 million metric tons of oil equivalent in 2024, the lowest figure since the beginning of the century. Consumption of natural gas for energy use increased significantly from 1970 to 2000, rising from 11.3 million metric tons of oil equivalent to 95.9 million metric tons of oil equivalent.

TwitterBetween 2003 and 2013, the production of natural gas in the United Kingdom was in a state of steady decline. However, in the following years production began to increase, and by 2020 amounted to **** billion cubic meters. Figures dropped to *****billion cubic meters in 2024. Despite these declines, the UK remains a major gas producing country. In Europe, it is only******* behind Norway, where the majority of UK gas imports originate from. Gas consumption Much like production, the consumption of natural gas has seen an overall decline since 2003, falling to a low of ** billion cubic meters. However, in the preceding years, consumption saw a gradual increase, and amounted to ** billion cubic meters in 2016. This was the highest level since 2012. An important role in the energy mix Despite production and consumption declining, natural gas still plays a major role in the UK’s fuel mix. In 2023, natural gas made up approximately ** percent of the total fuel mix. That same year, nearly ** million metric tons of oil equivalent of gas were used in the generation of electricity.
