Notes on Local Authority Housing Statistics (LAHS) open data

These datafiles contain the underlying data used to create the main LAHS tables and reflect the latest revisions to historical LAHS data. There will therefore be some minor discrepancies when compared to individual historical publications of LAHS tables.

LAHS questions are represented in this open data file by the question codes as recorded in the latest form (the 2023-24 return). This may differ from the code they were originally assigned, but the aim is to facilitate a time series analysis. Variables that have been discontinued are usually not included in this file, with only a few exceptions where they provide information that helps understand other data.

A data dictionary for this open data can be found in the accessible Open Document Spreadsheet file.<

    Description

The UK daily weather observation data contain meteorological values measured on a 24 hour time scale. The measurements of sunshine duration, concrete state, snow depth, fresh snow depth, and days of snow, hail, thunder and gail were attained by observation stations operated by the Met Office across the UK operated and transmitted within DLY3208, NCM, AWSDLY and SYNOP messages. The data span from 1887 to 2023. For details of observations see the relevant sections of the MIDAS User Guide linked from this record for the various message types.

This version supersedes the previous version of this dataset and a change log is available in the archive, and in the linked documentation for this record, detailing the differences between this version and the previous version. The change logs detail new, replaced and removed data. These include the addition of data for calendar year 2023.

This dataset is part of the Midas-open dataset collection made available by the Met Office under the UK Open Government Licence, containing only UK mainland land surface observations owned or operated by the Met Office. It is a subset of the fuller, restricted Met Office Integrated Data Archive System (MIDAS) Land and Marine Surface Stations dataset, also available through the Centre for Environmental Data Analysis - see the related dataset section on this record. Currently this represents approximately 95% of available daily weather observations within the full MIDAS collection.

    Description

The UK daily rainfall data contain rainfall accumulation and precipitation amounts over a 24 hour period. The data were collected by observation stations operated by the Met Office across the UK and transmitted within the following message types: NCM, AWSDLY, DLY3208 and SSER. The data spans from 1853 to 2023. Over time a range of rain gauges have been used - see section 5.6 and the relevant message type information in the linked MIDAS User Guide for further details.

This version supersedes the previous version (202308) of this dataset and a change log is available in the archive, and in the linked documentation for this record, detailing the differences between this version and the previous version. The change logs detail new, replaced and removed data. These include the addition of data for calendar year 2023.

It is a subset of the fuller, restricted Met Office Integrated Data Archive System (MIDAS) Land and Marine Surface Stations dataset, also available through the Centre for Environmental Data Analysis - see the related dataset section on this record. A large proportion of the UK raingauge observing network (associated with WAHRAIN, WADRAIN and WAMRAIN for hourly, daily and monthly rainfall measurements respectively) is operated by other agencies beyond the Met Office, and are consequently currently excluded from the Midas-open dataset. Currently this represents approximately 13% of available daily rainfall observations within the full MIDAS collection.

The measurements were recorded by observation stations operated by the Met Office across the UK and transmitted within NCM, DLY3208 or AWSDLY messages. The data span from 1853 to 2019. Description

    Open Contracting Data Standard (OCDS)

The UK is the first G7 country to commit to the Open Contracting Data Standard (OCDS) for contracts administered by a central purchasing authority, the Crown Commercial Service (CCS). This means that the whole process of awarding public sector contracts will be visible to the public for the first time.

Open contracting means all data and documents are disclosed at all stages of the contracting process. This supports organisations to increase contracting transparency, and allows deeper analysis of contracting data by a wide range of users.

Working with the Open Contracting Partnership we have published our review of the UK Showcase and Learning project in the form of a Measurement, Evaluation and Learning Framework. This sets out the impact of our implementation from a baseline date of May 2016 to November 2017 (unless otherwise specified). An earlier digest of our progress is available online.

OCDS outputs are available for both Find a Tender and Contracts Finder.

    Find a Tender

You can download https://www.find-tender.service.gov.uk/" class="govuk-link">Find a Tender notices in OCDS JSON format using our application programming interface (API). Notice fields are mapped to OCDS version 1.1.5 with extensions as defined by the https://standard.open-contracting.org/profiles/eu/master/en/" class="govuk-link">Open Contracting Partnership.

    OCDS release package API

    Identifiers

    • Release IDs are unique within a procurement process (ocid)
    • Party (buyer or supplier) IDs are unique within a release

    XML downloads

The same notice data is also available to download from the data.gov.uk website or using their API. Daily Zip files contain an XML file for each notice published on that day.

    Contracts Finder

You can download https://www.contractsfinder.service.gov.uk/" class="govuk-link">Contracts Finder notices in OCDS JSON format using our API.

We have published a https://assets.publishing.service.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/719834/Input-Output_Field_Mapping_Contracts_Finder_OCDS_3_.xlsx" class="govuk-link">mapping document that shows how each field in each notice type maps to the corresponding field in OCDS.

Our Contracts Finder output is based v1.0 of the OCDS standard, with some enhancements from on v1.1. We plan to update to be fully compliant with v1.1 in the future.

    Description

Parkinson's disease (PD) is a neurodegenerative disorder characterised by motor symptoms, such as gait dysfunction and postural instability. Technological tools to continuously monitor outcomes could capture the hour-by-hour symptom fluctuations of PD. Development of such tools is hampered by the lack of labelled datasets from home settings. To this end, we propose REMAP, a human rater-labelled dataset of REal-world Mobility Activities in Parkinson's disease including people with and without PD doing sit-to-stand transitions and turns in gait while living in a home setting. These discrete activities are captured from free-living (unobserved, unstructured) and during clinical assessments. The PD participants withheld their dopaminergic medications for a time (causing increased symptoms), so their events are labelled as being “on” or “off” medications. We include skeleton pose camera data. We present this open dataset, where the skeleton pose data is coarsened for anonymisation. We illustrate use-case code measuring sit-to-stand duration, tested on both coarsened and refined data. This is a sister dataset so our controlled dataset (available on application) where there is more refined skeleton pose data and accelerometry.

    Description

The Rural Services Series monitors trends in access to services. This analysis uses the road network to provide the distances from each Output Area to each service. These figures give a measure of the availability of a service based on distance to that service. It does not factor in transportation options or cost elements which may affect usage of particular services.

    Description

The BrisT1D Dataset features the data collected in a longitudinal study in which 24 young adults with Type 1 Diabetes (T1D) in the UK were given smartwatches to use alongside their T1D self-management. During the six-month study, participants donated the data collected by their T1D devices and smartwatches and were involved in monthly interviews or focus groups. The anonymised transcripts of these study sessions are included along with the device data, in both an anonymised raw state and a processed state. This is the Open-Access part of the BrisT1D Dataset. It includes the processed state device data, study forms, transcripts, and demographic data. The raw state device data can be found in the BrisT1D-Restricted Dataset (https://doi.org/10.5523/bris.yonrplcb4bvi2vhhn2ehtmpey), available through data.bris (University of Bristol Data Repository) under Restricted Access.
