    Description

This is the ONS Postcode Directory (ONSPD) for the United Kingdom as at February 2023 in Comma Separated Variable (CSV) and ASCII text (TXT) formats. This file contains the multi CSVs so that postcode areas can be opened in MS Excel. To download the zip file click the Download button. The ONSPD relates both current and terminated postcodes in the United Kingdom to a range of current statutory administrative, electoral, health and other area geographies. It also links postcodes to pre-2002 health areas, 1991 Census enumeration districts for England and Wales, 2001 Census Output Areas (OA) and Super Output Areas (SOA) for England and Wales, 2001 Census OAs and SOAs for Northern Ireland and 2001 Census OAs and Data Zones (DZ) for Scotland. It now contains 2021 Census OAs and SOAs for England and Wales. It helps support the production of area based statistics from postcoded data. The ONSPD is produced by ONS Geography, who provide geographic support to the Office for National Statistics (ONS) and geographic services used by other organisations. The ONSPD is issued quarterly. (File size - 234 MB)NOTE: The 2022 ONSPDs included an incorrect update of the ITL field with two LA changes in Northamptonshire. This error has been corrected from the February 2023 ONSPD.NOTE: There was an issue with the originally published file where some change orders yet to be included in OS Boundary-LineÔ (including The Cumbria (Structural Changes) Order 2022, The North Yorkshire (Structural Changes) Order 2022 and The Somerset (Structural Changes) Order 2022) were mistakenly implemented for terminated postcodes. Version 2 corrects this, so that ward codes E05014171–E05014393 are not yet included. Please note that this product contains Royal Mail, Gridlink, LPS (Northern Ireland), Ordnance Survey and ONS Intellectual Property Rights.

This file contains the National Statistics Postcode Lookup (NSPL) for the United Kingdom as at February 2025 in Comma Separated Variable (CSV) and ASCII text (TXT) formats. To download the zip file click the Download button. The NSPL relates both current and terminated postcodes to a range of current statutory geographies via ‘best-fit’ allocation from the 2021 Census Output Areas (national parks and Workplace Zones are exempt from ‘best-fit’ and use ‘exact-fit’ allocations) for England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland. It supports the production of area-based statistics from postcoded data. The NSPL is produced by ONS Geography, who provide geographic support to the Office for National Statistics (ONS) and geographic services used by other organisations. The NSPL is issued quarterly. What this data is for

We use this data in the funding system to support publicly funded education and skills in England. This covers the adult skills fund, both in devolved and non-devolved areas.

The guidance document accompanying the data file explains how we use this data and what you can do with it to aid your enrolment of learners, and creation of individualised learner record data.

    How to access the data

The complete ASF postcode dataset is too large for you to open conventionally in spreadsheet software. You can load this file into a database or BI software to query the whole dataset.

To allow you to view the data in a spreadsheet, we have split the complete ASF postcode dataset into several spreadsheet readable csv files.

    UK Postcode-Level Flood Risk Data

Risk Level, Suitability, and Geographic Coordinates

    By GetTheData [source]

    About this dataset

The underlying source material has been compiled from open datasets including 'Risk of Flooding from Rivers and Sea', 'Open Postcode Geo' - all held under licence in agreement with Crown copyright & Database right (2017) & Royal Mail copyright & Database right (2017). The methodology used would combine each one of these datasets points into polygons with first identifying each risk area then mapping out corresponding postcode points within them which then could be tracked for its related longitude, latitude easting and northing positions. Through this comprehensive process you could get a better understanding regarding what individual postcodes are within high & low level flooding areas as well as find out from the latest publication date - when was it last issued? Ultimately this profound dataset comes in handy for prevention or even planning purposes informing citizens how serious some situations could become during extreme weather events such as floods or major storms allowing them to estimate potential risks before disaster ensues!

    How to use the dataset

In order to effectively use this dataset there are several key pieces of terminology that you should be familiar with:

    • FID – a unique identifier number associated with each record in the database.
    • Postcode – an alphanumeric code used to identify a specific geographic region within the country; consists of two parts: an outward code (e.g., RG4) and an inward code (e.g., 8DN).
    • PROB_4BAND – The flood risk level based on four categories represented in this field assigned by location - High, Medium, Low or Very Low; or None if outside of a high-risk area
    • SUITABILITY – The suitability rating determined by location; either suitable or not suitable for development based on constraints for building in a floodplain
    • Publication Date(PUB DATE) - The date that this information was made publicly available
    • Risk For Insurance SOP (Risk_For_Insurance_SOP) - A ranking system from 1-5 used as guidance only when offering advice before taking out insurance cover over certain property located in certain very extreme area

You will also need to be aware of some mathematical values associated with each postcode:

      • Easting – An eastward grid coordinate reference point corresponding to determining latitude/ longitude coordinates at specified points along an arc created by measuring distances between two other known points

      • Northing– A northward grid coordinate reference forming part of a geographical survey’s grid system

Finally, here is how you can get started working with this amazing dataset:

        1. Download it onto your computer from Kaggle's website (www.kaggle/datasets/UK Postecode Level Flood Risk Data).

          2

    Research Ideas

    • Creating a custom application that provides users with real-time flood risk and safety advice based on postcode.
    • Developing a map-based interface that integrates flood risk levels directly into Google Maps to assist people in planning trips and relocating in safer areas.
    • Developing an app that tracks the geographically accurate position of every property within each postcode, allowing for better risk assessment for businesses and insurers

A list of businesses located in London showing a range of information including company name, address, postcode, local authority, and SIC code (industry). The Free Company Data Product is a downloadable data snapshot containing basic company data of live companies on the register. The version available from Companies House has all UK business and is available to download in a series of Zip folders. The London cut available to download here, was created using a postcode list. Therefore, if there is an error in the postcode, or some other problem caused the postcode listed not to match a London postcode, those business will not be included in the file. Furthermore, inaccuracies in postcodes may mean that no local authority is listed for a company. Each entry represents a financial accounts submission of either a whole company or part of one. Some businesses have more than one entry in the directory because they need to submit more than one set of accounts for different parts of their business. Therefore, the number of entries in the directory will be greater than the number of businesses. Note, Large file size - the Excel file is almost 600MB. Companies House update the latest snapshot within 5 working days of the previous month end. The London file available here was published on 1 May 2018. Further metadata and user guidance is available here.

    Description

This dataset includes a series of modified UK administrative boundary shapefiles based on the 2011 census which are intended for use in more accurate visualisation of UK geospatial data analysis. There are two key features of these shapefiles: (1) administrative shapes have been clipped to the Ordnance Survey buildings shapefile, so that in choropleth visualisations relating to demographic data filled spaces represent populated areas of the UK rather than large undifferentiated blocks. (2) Shapefiles have been simplified to reduce loading and processing time, in the case of this repository at 100m. After testing, we have settled on a procedure to render buildings layer visually comprehensible at high zoom levels, by adding a small buffer, dissolving (so that individual overlapping shapes combine into a single more easily visualised shape) and then simplifying at 150m. It is important to emphasise that because of the use of simplification (using a Ramer–Douglas–Peucker algorithm), these shapefiles are not suitable for analysis as boundaries may not be suitably precise or accurate. For users interested in the process used to generate these files you can consult the codebase deposited on github.

Many thanks to colleagues including Alasdair Rae for recommendations on technique used here. Computations were performed using the University of Birmingham's BEAR Cloud service, which provides flexible resource for intensive computational work to the University's research community. See http://www.birmingham.ac.uk/bear for more details. Given the massive size of datasets involved (including the district buildings vector shapefile which is 1.4gb and consists of hundreds of thousands of individual shapes), this work would have been impossible without this invaluable resource. I hope that these files will be of use to colleagues who may not have access to similar large computational arrays and make the process of visualising UK boundary and census data more accurate and efficient.

Original files are under OGLv3 licenses. Derived data files, where possible are licensed for use under CC BY 4.0.

    Files include the following:

    Original unmodified data:

infuse_ctry_2011.zip - original country level shapes, based on 2011 census, downloaded from https://borders.ukdataservice.ac.uk/ukborders/easy_download

infuse_dist_lyr_2011.zip - original local authority shapes, based on 2011 census, downloaded from https://borders.ukdataservice.ac.uk/ukborders/easy_download

TermsAndConditions.html - UK Data Service license details (OGLv3), applies to all the above

GB_Postcodes.zip - UK postcode district shapes, prepared by Addy Pope, https://datashare.ed.ac.uk/handle/10283/2597

    Derived data files:

OS_Open_Zoomstack_district_buildings.zip - buildings layer extracted from Ordnance Survey Zoomstack package, licensed under OGLv3 and exported to gpkg format.

*_simplified_100m.gpkg - Administrative shapes from above, simplified in R at a resolution of 100 metres.

*_simplified_100m_buildings_overlay_simplified.gpkg - Administrative shapes from above, simplified in R at a resolution of 100 metres, and then clipped to the buildings layer.

*_simplified_100m_buildings_overlay_simplified.gpkg - Administrative shapes from above, simplified in R at a resolution of 100 metres, and then run against the buildings layer as a difference layer. Suitable for using as an overlay as the shapes are inverse.

Users who wish to use these shapefiles in a reproducible research context may want to download individual files directly from this repository. To do so, you could use the following R code:

    load packages

require(sf) # load simplefeature data class, supercedes sp() and used for st_read

given the size and complexity even of simplified files here, ragg is highly recommended

for users on macos given inefficiencies in default R graphics device

    require(ragg)

    create paths as needed

    if (dir.exists("data") == FALSE) { dir.create("data") }

download data files only if they aren't already present

    if (file.exists("data/infuse_dist_lyr_2011.shp") == FALSE) { download.file("https://borders.ukdataservice.ac.uk/ukborders/easy_download/prebuilt/shape/infuse_dist_lyr_2011.zip", destfile = "data/infuse_dist_lyr_2011.zip") unzip("infuse_dist_lyr_2011.zip", exdir = "data")} local_authorities <- st_read("data/infuse_dist_lyr_2011.shp")
