    The Home Office has changed the format of the published data tables for a number of areas (asylum and resettlement, entry clearance visas, extensions, citizenship, returns, detention, and sponsorship). These now include summary tables, and more detailed datasets (available on a separate page, link below). A list of all available datasets on a given topic can be found in the ‘Contents’ sheet in the ‘summary’ tables. Information on where to find historic data in the ‘old’ format is in the ‘Notes’ page of the ‘summary’ tables.

    The Home Office intends to make these changes in other areas in the coming publications. If you have any feedback, please email MigrationStatsEnquiries@homeoffice.gov.uk.

    List of the previous tables relating to asylum and resettlement from June 2023 onwards. Most tables published on asylum and resettlement as part of the Immigration system statistics release contain a time series of data, so are not available here. Previous tables are available here if they contain data that would be otherwise lost when publishing a new release, for example tables without a timeseries.

    For summary tables published prior to June 2023, please see previous editions of the Immigration system statistics quarterly release.

    Description

    This release replaces the previous annual and quarterly publications Control of Immigration Statistics and the annual British Citizenship, following a public consultation. Each topic now has its own entry, links to these related reports can be found under the "additional links" section. When someone applies for asylum, they are applying for protection from persecution or fear of persecution in their own country. The UK Border Agency then decides whether the application is legitimate. One person (the main applicant) can apply for asylum on behalf of themselves and others (dependants).

    As of mid-2024, Iran was the largest refugee-hosting country in the world. According to data available by the UN Refugee Agency UNHCR, there were nearly 3.8 million refugees in Iran. Turkey was second with more than 3.1 million. The data refers to the total number of refugees in a given country, not considering the date of their application for asylum or the date of their flight.

    Between 2012 and 2014 there was an 88 percent increase in the number of Syrian migrants being granted asylum in the UK; a direct result of the Syrian Civil War.
