    Description

    Transport for London's (TFL) Public Transport Accessibility Levels (PTALs)

    PTALS are a detailed and accurate measure of the accessibility of a point to the public transport network, taking into account walk access time and service availability. The method is essentially a way of measuring the density of the public transport network at any location within Greater London.

    Each ares is graded between 0 and 6b, where a score of 0 is very poor access to public transport, and 6b is excellent access to public transport.

    The current methodology was developed in 1992, by the London Borough of Hammersmith and Fulham. The model has been thoroughly reviewed and tested, and has been agreed by the London Borough-led PTAL development group as the most appropriate for use across London.

    The measure therefore reflects:

    • • Walking time from the point-of interest to the public transport access points;
    • • The reliability of the service modes available;
    • • The number of services available within the catchment; and
    • • The level of service at the public transport access points - i.e. average waiting time.

    It does not consider:

    • • The speed or utility of accessible services;
    • • Crowding, including the ability to board services; or,
    • • Ease of interchange.

    The PTAL methodology was developed for London where a dense integrated public transport network means that nearly all destinations can be reached within a reasonable amount of time. Research using the ATOS (Access to Opportunities and Services) methodology shows that there is a strong correlation between PTALs and the time taken to reach key services – i.e. high PTAL areas generally have good access to services and low PTAL areas have poor access to services.

    Notes

    6-digit references identify 100m grid squares.

    The 2012 CSV file previously available on the Datastore is now only available via the TfL feeds page.

    The 2014 files are available to download below. This includes the GIS contour files.

    Current PTAL values can be viewed at TfL’s web site: www.webptals.org.uk

    The GLA has calculated the percentage of population for each ward, LSOA, MSOA and borough within each PTAL. The files for 2014 are available below. The method used mapped the number of addresses (using Ordinance Survey AddressBase Plus, and 2011 Census London Output Areas boundaries).

    TFL also publish on their website a tool that shows travel time and PTAL maps from any point within London. Click anywhere on the map or input a postcode to change the selected location.

    Description

    Data indicating the level of noise according to the strategic noise mapping of rail sources across England.

    • The day-evening-night level (Lden) is a noise indicator for overall annoyance based upon annual average A-weighted long-term sound over 24 hours with a 5 dB(A) penalty for evening noise (19:00-23:00) and a 10 dB(A) penalty for night-time noise (23:00-07:00).
    • The 16-hour equivalent continuous level (LAeq,16h) is a noise indicator which describes the annual average steady noise level over the 16-hour daytime period (07:00 to 23:00) which contains the same sound energy as the actual fluctuating sound across the same period.
    • The day level (Lday) is a daytime noise indicator based upon annual average A-weighted long-term sound over the daytime period (07:00-19:00) which contains the same sound energy as the actual fluctuating sound across the same period.
    • The evening level (Leve) is an evening noise indicator based upon annual average A-weighted long-term sound over the evening period (19:00-23:00) which contains the same sound energy as the actual fluctuating sound across the same period.
    • The night level (Lnight) is a night-time noise indicator based upon annual average A-weighted long-term sound over the night period (23:00-07:00) which contains the same sound energy as the actual fluctuating sound across the same period.
    • The 6-hour equivalent continuous level (LAeq,6h) is a noise indicator which describes the annual average steady noise level over the 6-hour period (24:00 to 06:00) which contains the same sound energy as the actual fluctuating sound across the same period.
    • The 18-hour equivalent continuous level (LAeq,18h) is a noise indicator which describes the annual average steady noise level over the 18-hour period (06:00 to 24:00) which contains the same sound energy as the actual fluctuating sound across the same period.

    Noise levels are modelled on a 10m grid at a receptor height of 4m above ground, with a lower threshold cutoff of 35dB for the Lnight and LAeq,6h metrics, and 40dB for all other metrics. Data is available for all railway sources and also those defined as "major" under the Regulations.

    This data is a product of the strategic noise mapping analysis undertaken in 2022 to meet the requirements of the Environmental Noise (England) Regulations 2006 (as amended).

    Description

    This dataset consists of a 1km resolution raster version of the Land Cover Map 2000 for Great Britain. Each 1km pixel represents the dominant aggregate class across the 1km area. The aggregate classes are aggregations of the target classes, broadly representing Broad Habitats (see below). The dataset is part of a series of data products produced by the Centre for Ecology and Hydrology known as LCM2000. LCM2000 is a parcel-based thematic classification of satellite image data covering the entire United Kingdom. The map updates and upgrades the Land Cover Map of Great Britain (LCMGB). Like the earlier 1990 products, LCM2000 is derived from a computer classification of satellite scenes obtained mainly from Landsat, IRS and SPOT sensors and also incorporates information derived from other ancillary datasets. LCM2000 was classified using a nomenclature corresponding to the Joint Nature Conservation Committee (JNCC) Broad Habitats, which encompasses the entire range of UK habitats. In addition, it recorded further detail where possible. The series of LCM2000 products includes vector and raster formats, with a number of different versions containing varying levels of detail and at different spatial resolutions.

    Description

    This is a web map service (WMS) for the Land Cover Map 2007 (LCM2007), percentage cover at 1km for aggregate classes. Land Cover Map 2007 (LCM2007) is a parcel-based thematic classification of satellite image data covering the entire United Kingdom. The map updates and upgrades the Land Cover Map of Great Britain (LCMGB) 1990 and LCM2000. Like the earlier 1990 and 2000 products, LCM2007 is derived from a computer classification of satellite scenes obtained mainly from Landsat, IRS and SPOT sensors. It also covers Northern Ireland and incorporates information derived from other ancillary datasets. LCM2007 was classified using a hierarchical nomenclature corresponding to Joint Nature Conservation Committee (JNCC) Broad Habitats, which encompasses the entire range of UK habitats. In addition, it recorded further detail where possible , incorporating land cover classes sought by other users. LCM2007 is produced in both vector and raster formats, with a number of different versions containing varying levels of detail and at different spatial resolutions. This WMS is for Great Britain only.

    Description

    Data identifying landscape areas (shown as polygons) attributed with geological names and rock type descriptions. The scale of the data is 1:50 000 scale providing bedrock geology. Onshore coverage is provided for all of England, Wales, Scotland and the Isle of Man. Bedrock geology describes the main mass of solid rocks forming the earth's crust. Bedrock is present everywhere, whether exposed at surface in outcrops or concealed beneath superficial deposits or water bodies. The bedrock geology of Great Britain is very diverse and includes three broad classes based on their mode of origin: igneous, metamorphic and sedimentary. The data includes attribution to identify each rock type (in varying levels of detail) as described in the BGS Rock Classification Scheme (volumes 1-3 ). The bedrock has formed over long periods of geological time, from the Archean eon some 7500 million years ago, to the relatively young Pliocene, 58 million years ago. The age of the rocks is identified in the data through their BGS lexicon name (published for each deposit at the time of the original survey or subsequent digital data creation). For stratified rocks i.e. arranged in sequence, this will usually be of a lithostratigraphic type. Other rock types for example intrusive igneous bodies will be of a lithodemic type. More information on the formal naming of UK rocks is available in the BGS Lexicon of Named Rock Units. Geological names are based on the lithostratigraphic or lithodemic hierarchy. The lithostratigraphic scheme arranges rock bodies into units based on rock-type and geological time of formation. Where rock-types do not fit into the lithostratigraphic scheme, for example intrusive, deformed rocks subjected to heat and pressure resulting in new or changed rock types; then their classification is based on their rock-type or lithological composition, using visible features such as texture, structure, mineralogy. The data are available in vector format (containing the geometry of each feature linked to a database record describing their attributes) as ESRI shapefiles and are available under BGS data licence.

    Description

    A collection of hydrogeological maps created by the British Geological Survey between 1967 and 1994. The maps in the collection cover aspects of groundwater availability, exploitation and quality and were published at various scales from 1:25 000 to 1:625 000 A hydrogeological map is a specialized type of map that illustrates the distribution and characteristics of hydrogeological features in a particular area. Hydrogeological maps of the UK provide information on major aquifers, including geological and lithological information, surface drainage systems and water quality issues. The 23 maps show information on surface water features, the three dimensional geometry of aquifers, groundwater levels, abstractions and quality including saline intrusion in varying amounts of detail. They range in scale from 1:625 000, for the national map of the hydrogeology of England and Wales, down to 1:25 000 for some of the smaller regional maps. These maps are important tools for understanding and managing groundwater resources, as well as for addressing water-related environmental issues. These maps are hard-copy paper records stored in the National Geoscience Data Centre (NGDC), and are delivered as digital scans through the BGS website.

    Description

    This low-resolution image has been produced from BGS airborne and marine magnetic data. The colour was generated using the BGS COLMAP software package. Colour levels are defined by histogram equalisation. Combining this image with the grey shaded relief image produces a similar image to the colour shaded relief image. A published coloured shaded relief map, using the full resolution of the data and produced at a scale of 1: 1500 000, is available. The map covers a larger area than this image, and includes additional data from other sources. The data used to compile this image are available in various forms for academic and commercial licensing. The data from surveys covering the UK mainland have been digitised from their original analogue form. Elsewhere data were acquired digitally. Standard methods of processing were used to remove diurnal and secular variations and to minimise line intersection errors. While efforts have been made to remove artefacts from the data, some may remain between adjacent datasets. Generally anomalies over man-made structures have not been removed. The data have been interpolated onto a 1km x 1km grid using a variable tension technique, and smoothed.
