    Description

The AIDS epidemic has put a spotlight on the many fault lines in society. Where there are inequalities, power imbalances, violence, marginalization, taboos and stigma and discrimination, HIV takes hold. This edition of UNAIDS data shows the results of some of those successes, but also the challenges that remain. It contains the very latest data on the world’s response to HIV, consolidating a small part of the huge volume of data collected, analysed and re ned by UNAIDS over the years.

Country The country the data corresponds to.The data is a subset of UNICEF’s ‘Key HIV epidemiology indicators for children and adolescents aged 10-19, 1990-2019.’This UNICEF data is sourced from UNAIDS 2020 estimates, which provide ‘modeled estimates using the best available epidemiological and programmatic data to track the HIV epidemic’. Modeled estimates are used because counting the true numbers would require regularly testing entire populations for HIV, and investigating all deaths, which is ‘logistically impossible and ethically problematic.’ For more information on the methodology behind these estimates, see the full UNAIDS 2020 report.

UNICEF Region The region the country belongs to - this dataset includes countries from Eastern & Southern Africa, and West & Central Africa.

Year The year the estimates corresponds to.

Sex Whether the estimates refer to men or women.

Age The age group that the estimates refer to - this dataset contains only estimates for adolescent women and men between the ages of 10-19.

Estimated incidence rate of new HIV infection per 1000 uninfected population The estimated number of new HIV infections, for every 1000 uninfected people in the relevant group. Note - some fields were displayed as ‘<0.01’ in the original data, however these have been rounded up to 0.01 in order to make the field numeric.

Estimated number of annual AIDS related deaths The estimated number of annual AIDS related deaths in the relevant group, to the nearest 100. Note - in the original data, values below 500 were split into the following groups; <500, <200, and <100. To make the field numeric, these have been rounded to 500, 200, and 100 respectively.

Estimated number of annual new HIV infections The estimated number of new annual HIV infections in the relevant group. Note - in the original data, values below 500 were split into the following groups; <500, <200, and <100. To make the field numeric, these have been rounded to 500, 200, and 100 respectively.

The estimated number of people living with HIV in the relevant group. Note - in the original data, values below 500 were split into the following groups; <500, <200, and <100. To make the field numeric, these have been rounded to 500, 200, and 100 respectively.

Estimated rate of annual AIDS related deaths per 100,000 population The estimated number of annual AIDS related deaths, for every 100,000 people in the relevant group. Note - some fields were displayed as ‘<0.01’ in the original data, however these have been rounded up to 0.01 in order to make the field numeric.

    Description

Background: The Investment Framework Enhanced (IFE) proposed in 2013 by the Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS) explored how maximizing existing interventions and adding emerging prevention options, including a vaccine, could further reduce new HIV infections and AIDS-related deaths in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). This article describes additional modeling which looks more closely at the potential health impact and cost-effectiveness of AIDS vaccination in LMICs as part of UNAIDS IFE. Methods: An epidemiological model was used to explore the potential impact of AIDS vaccination in LMICs in combination with other interventions through 2070. Assumptions were based on perspectives from research, vaccination and public health experts, as well as observations from other HIV/AIDS interventions and vaccination programs. Sensitivity analyses varied vaccine efficacy, duration of protection, coverage, and cost. Results: If UNAIDS IFE goals were fully achieved, new ann...

Costa Rica CR: Net Official Flows from UN Agencies: UNAIDS data was reported at 0.024 USD mn in 2017. This records an increase from the previous number of 0.003 USD mn for 2016. Costa Rica CR: Net Official Flows from UN Agencies: UNAIDS data is updated yearly, averaging 0.020 USD mn from Dec 2006 (Median) to 2017, with 11 observations. The data reached an all-time high of 0.120 USD mn in 2007 and a record low of 0.003 USD mn in 2016. Costa Rica CR: Net Official Flows from UN Agencies: UNAIDS data remains active status in CEIC and is reported by World Bank. The data is categorized under Global Database’s Costa Rica – Table CR.World Bank.WDI: Defense and Official Development Assistance. Net official flows from UN agencies are the net disbursements of total official flows from the UN agencies. Total official flows are the sum of Official Development Assistance (ODA) or official aid and Other Official Flows (OOF) and represent the total disbursements by the official sector at large to the recipient country. Net disbursements are gross disbursements of grants and loans minus repayments of principal on earlier loans. ODA consists of loans made on concessional terms (with a grant element of at least 25 percent, calculated at a rate of discount of 10 percent) and grants made to promote economic development and welfare in countries and territories in the DAC list of ODA recipients. Official aid refers to aid flows from official donors to countries and territories in part II of the DAC list of recipients: more advanced countries of Central and Eastern Europe, the countries of the former Soviet Union, and certain advanced developing countries and territories. Official aid is provided under terms and conditions similar to those for ODA. Part II of the DAC List was abolished in 2005. The collection of data on official aid and other resource flows to Part II countries ended with 2004 data. OOF are transactions by the official sector whose main objective is other than development-motivated, or, if development-motivated, whose grant element is below the 25 per cent threshold which would make them eligible to be recorded as ODA. The main classes of transactions included here are official export credits, official sector equity and portfolio investment, and debt reorganization undertaken by the official sector at nonconcessional terms (irrespective of the nature or the identity of the original creditor). Description

BackgroundHuman Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) significantly affects adolescents globally, with the sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) reporting a high burden of the disease. HIV testing, treatment, and retention to care are low among adolescents. We conducted a mixed-method systematic review to assess anti-retroviral therapy (ART) adherence; barriers and facilitators to ART adherence and ART outcomes among adolescents living with HIV and on ART in sub-Saharan Africa.MethodsWe conducted searches in four scientific databases for studies conducted between 2010 and March 2022 to identify relevant primary studies. Studies were screened against inclusion criteria and assessed for quality, and data was extracted. Meta-analysis of rates and odd ratios was used to plot the quantitative studies and meta-synthesis summarized the evidence from qualitative studies.ResultsA total of 10 431 studies were identified and screened against the inclusion/ exclusion criteria. Sixty-six studies met the inclusion criteria (41 quantitative, 16 qualitative, and 9 mixed-methods study designs). Fifty-three thousand two hundred and seventeen (53 217) adolescents (52 319 in quantitative studies and 899 in qualitative studies) were included in the review. Thirteen support focused interventions for improved ART adherence were identified from quantitative studies. The plotted results from the meta-analysis found an ART adherence rate of 65% (95%CI 56–74), viral load suppression was 55% (95%CI 46–64), un-suppressed viral load rate of 41% (95%CI 32–50), and loss to follow up of 17% (95%CI 10–24) among adolescents. Meta-synthesis found six themes of barriers to ART (social, patient-based, economic, health system-based, therapy-based, and cultural barriers) in both the qualitative and quantitative studies, and three themes of facilitators to ART were also identified (social support, counselling, and ART education and secrecy or confidentiality) from qualitative studies.ConclusionART adherence remains low among adolescents in SSA despite multiple interventions implemented to improve ART adherence. The low adherence rate may hinder the attainment of the UNAIDS 2030 targets. Additionally, various barriers to ART adherence due to lack of support have been reported among this age group. However, interventions aimed at improving social support, educating, and counselling adolescents may improve and sustain ART adherence.Trial registrationSystematic review registration: PROSPERO CRD42021284891.

    Description

Managing data is hard. So many of our partner institutions are under-resourced when it comes to preparing, archiving, sharing and interpreting HIV-related datasets. Crucial datasets often sit on the laptops of local staff in Excel sheets and Word documents, or in large locked-down data warehouses where only a few have the understanding to access it. But data is useless if is not accessible by trusted parties for analysis. UNAIDS has identified the following challenges faced by our local partners: Administrative burden of data management Equipment failure Staff turnover Duplication of requests for data Secure sharing of data Keeping data up-to-date A new software project has been established to tackle these challenges and streamline the data management process... The AIDS Data Repository aims to improve the quality, accessibility and consistency of HIV data and HIV estimates by providing a centralised platform with tools to help countries manage and share their HIV data. The project includes the following features: Schema-based dataset management will help local staff with the process of preparing, validating and archiving key datasets according to the requirements from UNAIDS. Schemas that are designed or approved by UNAIDS determine the design of web forms and validation tools that guide users through the process of uploading essential data. Secure and licensed dataset sharing will give partners confidence that their data should only be used by the parties they trust for the purposes they have agreed. Data access management tools will help organisations understand who has access to use their datasets. Access can be requested, reviewed and granted through the site, but also revoked. This can be done for individual users or for entire organisations. Cloud based archiving and backup of all datasets means that data will not go missing when equipment fails or staff leave. All datasets can be tagged and searched according to their metadata and will be reliably accessible forever. DHIS2 interoperability will enable administrators to share DHIS2 data with all the features and tools provided by the AIDS data repository. Datasets comprising elements automatically pulled from a DHIS2 instance can be added to the site. Periodic pulling of data will ensure that these datasets do not fall out of date. Web-based tools will help administrators configure and monitor the DHIS2 configuration that will likely change over time. Spectrum/Naomi interoperability will streamline the process of preparing and running the Spectrum and HIVE statistical models that are supported by UNAIDS. Web forms and validation tools guide users through the process of preparing the source data sets. These source data sets can then be automatically pulled into the Spectrum and Naomi statistical modelling software tools, which will return the results to the AIDS Data Repository once finished.
