    Description

The number of unemployed youth worldwide decreased gradually from 2010 to 2019, but then increased in 2020 as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. As of 2025, there were an estimated 66.94 million unemployed youths between 15 and 24 years worldwide. Highest youth unemployment globally The countries with the highest rates of youth not in education, employment, or training (NEET) include Niger, Kiribati, Guyana, Somalia, and Afghanistan. While there is geographic diversity in this group, each of these countries is either low-income or low-middle income. Moreover, each has their own set of challenges contributing to high NEET rates. For example, in Afghanistan, this can be attributed to conflict and the 2021 Taliban takeover. In Kiribati and other Pacific Island nations, they face high levels of brain drain to larger economies such as Australia, New Zealand, and the United States. Lowest youth unemployment globally On the contrary, countries with the lowest youth NEET rates include Japan, the Netherlands, Sweden, Iceland, and Malta. Factors such as well-structured vocational training programs and affordable university education contribute to low NEET rates. However, these countries still face their own challenges. For example, one contributing factor to such low NEET rates in Japan is the overall shrinkage of the Japanese population, which is simultaneously aging. While unemployment remains low in the country, it faces the potential crisis of not having enough people to support the labor market.

    Description

In 2024, approximately 11 million people in urban areas of China had been registered as unemployed. That was an increase from 10.7 million in the previous year. Unemployment figures in China Two different sets of unemployment figures exist in China, registered unemployment and surveyed unemployment. Surveyed unemployment figures represent estimates for total unemployment in urban areas based on monthly conducted surveys. In contrast, registered unemployment refers to people in urban areas who are covered by unemployment insurance and have registered their joblessness to receive unemployment payments. As many laborers working in Chinese cities are not covered by unemployment insurance, figures for registered unemployment are always lower than those for surveyed unemployment and do not represent a correct picture of total unemployment. According to the graph at hand, absolute registered unemployment in urban China has gradually risen over the past decade. This is mainly related to an overall increase of people living and working in Chinese cities. Absolute figures for the total number of unemployed people are not published in China. Regional disparities in unemployment For several decades, unemployment figures in undeveloped western and central regions of China had been higher than those of the developing coastal provinces. This trend has been changing in recent years, as the economic development in many inner regions of China has caught up and labor intensive industries have been moved from the increasingly expensive coastal regions to cheaper locations in inner provinces. This trend has been supported by government efforts to develop the formerly underdeveloped western and central regions. Nevertheless, regional disparities remain, and overall economic conditions are still far from being equal. Nowadays, regional urban unemployment rates in the former center of the Chinese steel and heavy industries in northeastern China are the highest in national comparison, while unemployment in the southern coastal provinces Guangdong, Guangxi, and Hainan is comparatively low. Interestingly, the official unemployment rate of Beijing was by far the lowest in China, while that of Shanghai was much higher.

    Description

Annual average unemployment figures in Germany have been encouraging in recent years due to falling rates. In 2024, there were 2.79 million unemployed people, this was an increase from the year before and the highest figure since 2015. Jobseekers By definition, "registered as unemployed" are those who are registered with the Bundesagentur für Arbeit (Federal Employment Agency) or a similar association providing basic social care as "being out of a job (i.e. works less than 15 hours per week), looking for a job, available for the job market." This means that not every employable person in need is unemployed. Thus, people who do not work are not automatically unemployed. Predictably, German jobseekers also use platforms such as indeed and LinkedIn to find job postings. Those who are unemployed in Germany are entitled to social security payments known as Bürgergeld each month.
Automation risk A rising concern among employees is the threat of job loss due to automation. Larger companies in particular use industrial robots, which poses questions about the future of many manual jobs. Although different industries can rely on automation to varying extents, there are some that will be more heavily impacted than others. For example, manufacturing as well as retail trade are predicted to be some of the most heavily affected industry.

    Description

The number of unemployed people who have been claiming benefit continuously for more than 12 months divided by the total number of unemployed people claiming benefits, expressed as a percentage. Claimant count, age and duration data are based on computerised claims. Therefore while total unemployed claimants is available including clerical claims, for the purpose of this calculation both the numerator and denominator are restricted to computerised claims. To monitor the policy aim of tackling unemployment, focusing on long term unemployment. The indicator is based on the claimant count, which includes the number of people who are claiming Jobseekers Allowance (JSA) or National Insurance Credits. Unemployment is a significant risk factor for poor physical and mental health and therefore a major determinant of health inequalities. It is associated with morbidity, injuries, and premature mortality, especially through increased risk of coronary heart disease. It is also related to depression, anxiety, self-harm and suicide. In addition, unemployment reinforces inequalities in health by social class. Legacy unique identifier: P01081
