UNESCO is a major collector and disseminator of statistical data on education and related subjects. Its statistical activities are aimed at providing relevant, reliable and current information for development and policy-making purposes, both at the national and international levels, and the production of reliable statistical indicators for education. These indicators cover four main areas: educational population; access and participation; the efficiency and effectiveness of education; human and financial resources.
The UNESCO Education Database covers a wide range of these areas, at four main educational levels: pre-primary, primary, secondary and tertiary, in accordance with the International Standard Classification of Education (ISCED) system. This system provides standard definitions for each of the four levels of education examined. UNESCO collects and collates education data according to these definitions from approximately 200 countries, and compiles them into the Education Database time series, which is published annually.

    Main Topics:

Data are available in this collection for various topics related to primary education - the first ISCED level (ISCED = International Standard Classification of Education). Primary education usually begins at age five, six or seven years and lasts for about 5 or 6 years. However, in some countries, what is termed basic' education provided at this level may last longer. Primary education programmes are designed to give pupils a sound basic education in reading, writing and arithmetic along with an elementary understanding of other subjects such as natural history, geography, natural science, social science, art and music. From the year 1994, these data also includespecial' education at primary level as part of overall totals.
Topics covered here include : number of institutions and private pupils, pupils in primary education (total, by age and by grade), total numbers of teachers (part- and full-time), and pupils repeating' grades at this level. All data are further defined by gender. <br> Users should note that 15 countries have reported an automatic promotion policy to the next grade, whether pupils have completed their education at the previous grade or not. Thus, there will be no data values forrepeaters' for these countries : Bahamas, Denmark, Japan, Republic of Korea, Malaysia, Montserrat, Norway, Papua New Guinea, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Saint Lucia, Seychelles, Sudan, Sweden, Turks and Caicos Islands, United Kingdom and Zimbabwe.

The Foreign Students Statistics form part of the main UNESCO Education Database, but are collected separately, from a smaller number of participating countries, resulting in some structural differences.
UNESCO define a foreign student' asa person enrolled at an institution of tertiary education in a country of which he/she is not a permanent resident'. The student's country of origin is defined as `the country in which the student is permanently resident (home country)'. However, most member states included in the dataset have established their statistics on the basis of the student's original nationality rather than permanency of residence in the host country. UNESCO have noted some concerns about the quality of the data where these criteria differ, and this should be taken into consideration when data are examined.
    Main Topics:

The data cover foreign students in tertiary education - the third ISCED level (ISCED = International Standard Classification of Education).
Topics covered include: foreign students by country of origin, and total numbers of foreign students. These data may be further analysed to provide number of students from each country of origin for each country of study.

Entry to secondary education is generally around 11 years of age, and graduation around 16-18 years of age. Core education at the secondary level continues the basic programmes started at the primary level (see SN:3700), but usually with a more subject-oriented pattern. After three or four years of general academic education at this level, pupils may begin to specialize in vocational and technical subjects (which may or may not prepare them for employment or further technical study), or pursue a more academic programme designed to prepare them for university entrance. Topics covered here include: pupils in secondary education (total, by age and by grade), pupils repeating grades at secondary level (by grade), teachers and pupils at secondary level by institution, and numbers of teachers at secondary level. All data are further defined by gender.

The UNESCO Culture dataset contains three tables:

    1. The UNESCO Cultural Employment table includes comparable data to monitor the contribution of culture to economic and social development as well as the conditions of those engaged in cultural activities.
    2. The UNESCO Institute for Statistics (UIS) Questionnaire on Feature Film Statistics yields data including all key countries in the film industry. The data provide a unique perspective on how different countries and regions are transforming traditional approaches to the art and industry of film-making, especially in video and digital formats. Key indicators focus on habits of film consumption by looking at the origin of films viewed, as well as the most popular films, based on the frequency of attendance. Other indicators focus on indoor cinemas per capita and average ticket price per capita, providing a good perspective on cinema infrastructure and access.
    3. The UNESCO International Trade in Cultural Goods table is built using data from the UN Comtrade Database, which itself comprise of detailed global trade data.

    Description

There are currently twenty (20) Australian properties on the World Heritage List . A single Australian World Heritage Areas database has been created by combining data which was historically stored as a separate set of data for each property. World Heritage Area buffer zones are also included in this dataset for relevant properties. The Great Barrier Reef, the Tasmanian Wilderness, the Wet Tropics of Queensland and Shark Bay meet all four World Heritage criteria for natural heritage, with Kakadu National Park, Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park, Willandra Lakes Region and the Tasmanian Wilderness being listed for both natural and cultural criteria. The 2010, 2012 and 2013 extensions to the Tasmanian Wilderness have been incorporated. The Australian Fossil Mammal Sites (Naracoorte/Riversleigh), Lord Howe Island Group, Gondwana Rainforests of Australia, Fraser Island, Macquarie Island, Heard and McDonald Islands, the Greater Blue Mountains Area and Purnululu National Park are listed under the World Heritage criteria for natural heritage. The Royal Exhibition Building and Carlton Gardens, Melbourne were inscribed in the World Heritage List against Cultural criterion (ii): exhibit an important interchange of human values over a span of time or within a cultural area of the world, on developments in architecture or technology, monumental arts, town planning or landscape design. The Sydney Opera House was inscribed in the World Heritage List in 2007 against Cultural criterion (i) (see http://whc.unesco.org/en/criteria ) The Australian Convict Sites was inscribed on the World Heritage List on 31 July 2010. There are 11 sites that make up the World Heritage Australian Convict Sites against Cultural criterion (iv) and (vi). The Ningaloo Coast was inscribed on the World Heritage List in June 2011 against Natural criteria (vii) and (x). The coastline of Queensland was produced under specific contract for Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority (GBRMPA) by AUSLIG in 1984. Originally engineered by AUSLIG from datasets produced by the Division of National Mapping and RAN Hydrographic Service; Queensland coastal information produced by AUSLIG at 250k scale with 100k elements from developing technology at the time of genesis; Island information is specific to the Great Barrier Reef Region as produced from RAN Hydrographic Service data at 100k scale. Updated against satellite imagery during the RAP process (2003-2004) to 25k scale, especially in Cairns, Whitsundays and Hinchinbrook Regions. This coastline is used to represent the coastal boundary of the Great Barrier Reef WHA, and is supplied by GBRMPA Spatial Data Centre. Data and Resources

Tertiary' education is defined by UNESCO as education above secondary (school) level, and is referred to asthird' level education, according to ISCED (International Standard Classification of Education). Education at this ISCED level includes both further and higher education, and generally takes place at institutions other than schools. These educational institutions are classified in three categories: universities and equivalent degree granting institutions, distance learning' universities (similar to the <i>Open University</i> in the United Kingdom), and other third level educational institutes. <br> Topics covered in this data collection include: numbers of students and teachers, students' field of study (subject group), students and teachers by institution type (as per three categories above), andforeign' students (see also Foreign Students Statistics, SN:3698). All data are definable by gender.

    Description

Most social surveys collect data on respondents’ educational attainment. Current measurement practice involves a closed question with country-specific response options, which are needed because of the differences between educational systems. However, these are quite difficult to compare across countries. This is a challenge for both migrant and international surveys. Therefore, a measurement tool for educational attainment that was initially developed for German migrant surveys in the CAMCES project (Schneider, Briceno-Rosas, Herzing, et al. 2018; Schneider, Briceno-Rosas, Ortmanns, et al. 2018) was extended in the SERISS-project in work package 8, Task 8.3. In deliverable D8.8, we provide a database of educational qualifications and levels for 100 countries, including the definition of a search tree interface to facilitate the navigation of categories for respondents in computer-assisted surveys. All country-specific categories are linked to 3-digit codes of UNESCO's International Standard Classification of Education 2011 for Educational Attainment (ISCED-A), as well as to the education coding scheme used in the European Social Survey (ESS), "edulvlb". A live search of the database via two different interfaces, a search box (for a limited set of countries) and a search tree (for all countries), is available at the surveycodings website at https://surveycodings.org/articles/codings/levels-of-education. The search box and search tree can be implemented in survey questionnaires and thereby be used for respondents’ self-classification in computer-assisted surveys. The live search feature can also be used for post-coding open answers in already collected data.

    Description

The vector data set is based on the FAO-UNESCO soil map of the world. The digitized soil map of the world, at 1:5.000.000 scale, is in the geographic projection (latitude - longitude) intersected with a template containing water related features (coastlines, lakes, glaciers and double-lined rivers). The digital soil map of the world (except for the continent of Africa) was intersected with the country boundaries map from the world data bank ii (with country boundaries updated to January 1994 at 1:3 000 000 scale), obtained from the US government. For Africa, the country boundaries are derived from the FAO country boundaries on the original FAO/UNESCO soil map of the world. Country boundaries in both cases were checked and adjusted in certain places on the basis of FAO and UN conventions.

    Description

The World Database on Protected Areas (WDPA) is the most comprehensive global database of marine and terrestrial protected areas, updated on a monthly basis, and is one of the key global biodiversity data sets being widely used by scientists, businesses, governments, International secretariats and others to inform planning, policy decisions and management. The WDPA is a joint project between UN Environment and the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). The compilation and management of the WDPA is carried out by UN Environment World Conservation Monitoring Centre (UNEP-WCMC), in collaboration with governments, non-governmental organisations, academia and industry. There are monthly updates of the data which are made available online through the Protected Planet website where the data is both viewable and downloadable.Data and information on the world's protected areas compiled in the WDPA are used for reporting to the Convention on Biological Diversity on progress towards reaching the Aichi Biodiversity Targets (particularly Target 11), to the UN to track progress towards the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals, to some of the Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES) core indicators, and other international assessments and reports including the Global Biodiversity Outlook, as well as for the publication of the United Nations List of Protected Areas. Every two years, UNEP-WCMC releases the Protected Planet Report on the status of the world's protected areas and recommendations on how to meet international goals and targets. Many platforms are incorporating the WDPA to provide integrated information to diverse users, including businesses and governments, in a range of sectors including mining, oil and gas, and finance. For example, the WDPA is included in the Integrated Biodiversity Assessment Tool, an innovative decision support tool that gives users easy access to up-to-date information that allows them to identify biodiversity risks and opportunities within a project boundary. The reach of the WDPA is further enhanced in services developed by other parties, such as the Global Forest Watch and the Digital Observatory for Protected Areas, which provide decision makers with access to monitoring and alert systems that allow whole landscapes to be managed better. Together, these applications of the WDPA demonstrate the growing value and significance of the Protected Planet initiative.Government Protected Areas query:All of these expressions must be true:Status is 'Inscribed' orStatus is 'Established' orStatus is 'Designated'andDesignation Type is not 'International' orEnglish Designation is not 'Biosphere Reserve' orEnglish Designation is not 'Biosphere Reserve and Indigenous territory' orEnglish Designation is not 'Biosphere polygon' orEnglish Designation is not 'UNESCO-MAB Biosphere Reserve'
