In 2024, there were 7014,90 open job positions in Germany. Since the beginning of the timeline, 2011, the number of job vacancies has only increased. In 2022, there were almost double the number of positions compared to 2011. Employment in Germany Out of all G7 countries, Germany had the second lowest unemployment rate, bested only by Japan. Despite this, the continued high number of open job positions suggests that Germany’s workforce is too small or there are not enough people with certain skills that the labor market requires. A potential solution to this problem is migration, especially if the birth rate continues to decrease, because it would increase the size of the labor force and allow employers to find people with the necessary skill set. This would allow people of working age and the right skills to immediately join the workforce. According to the German Institute of Economics, if Germany faces a scenario of high migration, there will be a total of 39.1 million academics and professionally qualified people who could work by 2040. This is, however, still a decrease from 2025, when there are estimated to be almost 43 million qualified people in the workforce. This decrease, despite predicted high migration, suggests that there will be an increase in demand for workers in the future. Which sectors are be affected the most? Although it is clear that Germany is and will continue to face a shortage of skilled workers, the question remains, which industries will suffer the most? Different data gives slightly different answers to this question, but several professions always seem to have a shortage of labor. Among these were social work, care for the elderly, and the building of electronics. Though the availability of jobs and demand for workers is a good position for employees to be in, it is a stressful situation for companies. According to a survey conducted in 2024, the third largest business risk that companies saw for themselves in the coming months was a skilled workers shortage. Ultimately, companies will have to find a solution to this shortage in order to ensure the continued success of their business.

In the three months to February 2025, there were approximately 816,000 job vacancies in the UK, compared with 914,000 during the same period a year earlier. The number of job vacancies in the United Kingdom reached a record high of 1.3 million in the three months to May 2022, with the number of vacancies steadily falling since then. During the provided time period, the number of job vacancies fell to its lowest levels in the months leading to June 2020, at just 328,000, at the height of COVID-19 restrictions. Tight labor market beginning to loosen After weathering the economic storm of COVID-19, the UK labor market has been reasonably healthy since 2021. The unemployment rate, which reached 5.1 percent in late 2020, declined in the following months, to a post-pandemic low of 3.5 percent by August 2022. Since that point, however, the unemployment rate has crept up, and was 4.4 percent in November 2024. Resignations have also started to decline, after reaching a peak of 442,000 in the second quarter of 2022, there were just 181,000 in the third quarter of 2024. Which industries are experiencing staff shortages? The percentage of businesses reporting a staff shortage in the UK reached 15.7 percent in September 2022, before falling to just 9.7 percent by October 2023, another indication of a loosening labor market. According to data from that month, approximately 1 in 4 UK businesses in the accommodation and food services had a shortage of staff, the highest of any sector, followed by human health and social work at 18.4 percent, and manufacturing at 17.6 percent. Many of the recent struggles of Britain's National Health Service are directly related to staff shortages, with the public seeing a shortage of doctors and nurses, and overworked staff as some of the main problems facing the NHS.

This table contains the number of unfilled, new and filled vacancies in the government and education. The figures over vacancies are specified to government sector.
This table replaces the StatLine-table Vacancies; government and education 1992-2009. In 2010 the observation is based on the standard industrial classification 2008, SIC2008. Because of this the original figures of the period 1997 up to the second quarter of 2009, all based on SIC 1993, are recalculated to SIC 2008. Therefore these figures can deviate slightly from the figures from the Vacancies; government and education 1992-2009.
Data available since 1997, quarter 1.
Status of the figures: The figures in this table are final.
In the period from the third quarter of 2008 until the fourth quarter of 2009 the job vacancy-survey compiled the job vacancies at the Ministry of Defence according to a different method. Due to this approximately 7 thousand vacancies per quarter have been added to the government. This should be taken into account, when interpreting the results. Because of this extra number of vacancies, the numbers of vacancies, new vacancies and filled vacancies in this period are not completely consistent with the vacancies in the second quarter of 2008 and the first quarter of 2010. The results of this table are including the second quarter of 2009 based on recalculated information on basis of the perception according SBI 2008. Because of this the numbers of vacancies, new vacancies and filled vacancies are in the third quarter of 2009 not completely consistent with the vacancies in the second quarter.
Changes as of 14 February 2025: Figures of the fourth quarter of 2024 and year figures of 2024 have been added.
When will new figures be published? Figures of the first quarter of 2025 will be published in April/May 2025.
