The United Kingdom defence industry is a significant contributor to the nation's economy, exhibiting a robust market size of £64.55 billion in 2025. This sector demonstrates consistent growth, reflected in a Compound Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) of 3.12% projected from 2025 to 2033. Several factors drive this expansion. Increased geopolitical instability and the ongoing need for modernization of military equipment and technology are key drivers. Furthermore, government investments in research and development, coupled with a focus on enhancing national security capabilities, significantly contribute to market growth. The industry is segmented into various areas, including land systems, naval systems, aerospace & defense, and cybersecurity, each exhibiting unique growth trajectories. Major players such as BAE Systems, Lockheed Martin, and Thales dominate the market, leveraging their technological expertise and established relationships with the UK Ministry of Defence. However, challenges remain, including budgetary constraints and competition from international defence companies. Despite these challenges, the long-term outlook for the UK defence industry remains positive, underpinned by sustained government spending and the strategic importance of national defence. The forecast period (2025-2033) anticipates continued growth, driven by technological advancements in areas like autonomous systems, artificial intelligence, and cyber warfare. This necessitates continuous investment in research and development to maintain a technological edge. Furthermore, the increasing focus on collaborative partnerships and international collaborations within the defence sector further shapes the market landscape. While economic factors can influence spending patterns, the inherent need for national security ensures a relatively stable and expanding market for the foreseeable future. The dominance of established players is likely to continue, although disruptive technologies and new entrants may reshape the competitive dynamics in specific segments. Notable trends are: The Navy is Expected to Witness the Highest Growth During the Forecast Period.

In 2024/25, the United Kingdom spent approximately 63.6 billion British pounds on defense, compared with 56.8 billion pounds in the previous year. This was the highest defense spending for the UK during this provided time period. NATO and the two percent pledge The UK is a founding member of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), a military and political alliance initiated on the principle that an attack on one member is an attack on all. Members of NATO are expected to spend at least two percent of their GDP on defense, a target which the United Kingdom just missed between 2015/16 and 2020/21. Before 2016, the United Kingdom’s defense spending was always above this target and was higher than three percent of GDP before the mid-1990s. As of 2022/23, UK defense spending was slightly above this target, at 2.2 percent of GDP, with plans to increase it to three percent in the future. The UK and the War in Ukraine The recent pledge to increase UK defense spending is clearly linked to recent events in Europe. Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022 completely altered the European security landscape for the UK. Along with a coalition of other countries, the UK has been one of the key backers of the Ukrainian military effort, providing significant military aid over the course of the war. Apart from financial aid, the UK has provided Ukraine with equipment such as the Challenger 2 Main Battle Tank, a number of armored fighting vehicles, and missiles, including long-range Storm Shadow cruise-missiles.

    Description

The European defense industry, a significant player in the global landscape, is projected to experience moderate growth over the forecast period (2025-2033). While the provided CAGR of 0.04 suggests a relatively slow expansion, this figure likely underrepresents the dynamism within specific segments and nations. Factors such as geopolitical instability, particularly the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, and increased defense spending by several European nations are expected to stimulate growth in certain areas, such as armament and terrestrial platforms. The market is segmented by equipment type (Personnel Training and Protection, Communication, Armament, Transport) and platform (Terrestrial, Aerial, Naval), presenting diverse investment opportunities. Growth within the armament segment is anticipated to be particularly strong, driven by increased demand for advanced weaponry and modernization efforts across European armed forces. Conversely, segments like personnel training and protection might see slower growth, potentially due to existing infrastructure and established training programs. Regional variations are expected, with countries like the UK, Germany, and France maintaining significant market shares, while other nations might exhibit higher growth rates due to specific national security concerns or modernization programs. Competition within the industry is fierce, with major players like Thales, Rheinmetall, and BAE Systems vying for market share. The industry's future trajectory depends on ongoing geopolitical developments, technological advancements, and the budgetary priorities of individual European nations. The influence of key industry players like Thales, Lockheed Martin, and Airbus SE significantly shapes the market dynamics. These companies leverage their technological expertise and established supply chains to secure contracts and drive innovation. The market's growth is also influenced by government policies and regulatory frameworks concerning defense procurement, technological advancements (particularly in areas such as AI and autonomous systems), and the shifting global security landscape. The integration of new technologies is expected to drive growth in certain areas, potentially offsetting the slower overall CAGR. Furthermore, the ongoing emphasis on cybersecurity within defense systems presents both a challenge and opportunity for companies to innovate and secure market share. The ability to adapt to evolving threats and technological advancements will be critical for success in this dynamic and competitive sector. This report provides a detailed analysis of the European defense industry, covering the period from 2019 to 2033, with a focus on the current market landscape and future growth prospects. The study examines market size, trends, key players, and emerging technologies, offering valuable insights for stakeholders across the sector. Our comprehensive analysis includes historical data (2019-2024), estimates for 2025, and forecasts spanning 2025-2033, with 2025 as the base year. According to a European Defence Fund fact sheet, the Responsive Electronic Attack for Cooperative Tasks (REACT) program is intended to develop a system capable of jamming any signals used for targeting European aircraft while being able to turn off adversary electronic warfare emitters., June 2023: The UK Royal Air Force received two F-35B Lightning II stealth multirole combat aircraft from Lockheed Martin. The marked delivery is part of a contract order for 48 F-35Bs for the Royal Air Force and the Royal Navy. Along with this contract, in April 2023, a USD 225-million support agreement was awarded to Lockheed Martin to sustain the British F-35 fleet’s operability.. Description

European military fighting vehicle manufacturers suffer from intense competition from US manufacturers, representing a considerable proportion of imports. Nonetheless, Germany and France generate a substantial proportion of armoured vehicles under the industry's most significant manufacturer, KMW+NEXTER Defense Systems NV. Manufacturers rely on defence spending across Europe and non-NATO members to boost new order volumes. According to the European Commission, general government expenditure in the EU on defence amounted to 1.3 % of GDP in 2021. However, this figure is rising in response to the Russia-Ukraine conflict, boosting revenue prospects. Over the five years through 2024, industry revenue is forecast to drop at a compound annual rate of 4.7% to €5.4 billion. The COVID-19 outbreak caused revenue to plunge as factories temporarily closed amid lockdown measures, resulting in sub-optimal production levels throughout 2020. Industry revenue failed to fully rebound over 2021 and 2022, mainly because of supply-chain disruption, inflating input prices and restricting output volumes. The Russia-Ukraine conflict also invited a flood of armoured vehicle imports from the US, limiting European manufacturers' potential to capitalise on greater demand. In 2024, industry revenue is forecast to drop by 3.2%, thanks to intense competition from US manufacturers.
Over the five years through 2029, industry revenue is expected to expand at a compound annual rate of 3% to reach €6.2 billion. Increased geopolitical tension, namely the Russia-Ukraine and Israeli conflicts, will boost government spending on defence and armoured military vehicles. In February 2023, the UK government outlined plans to spend £242 billion on defence equipment procurement over the next 10 years, including £17.4 billion on land equipment. A progressive and strategic expansion in the European defence budget and the launch of infantry support projects will boost demand for military vehicles and fuel innovation.

    Description

The majority of demand for weapons and ammunition manufactured by European companies comes from the European defence sector and allied militaries like the US. Domestic and international defence budgets are the primary drivers of revenue, typically expanding during geopolitical tension and conflict. Yet, the industry faces intense global competition from US manufacturers, which produce the lion's share of ammunition and weapons globally. Imports have climbed strongly in recent years, totalling €2.6 billion in 2022, as the Russia-Ukraine conflict encouraged a flood of US weapons and ammunition imports to assist Ukraine with the war effort. Industry revenue is expected to swell at a compound annual rate of 1.5% over the five years through 2025, reaching €25.6 billion in the current year, with an anticipated revenue jump of 0.6%. Industry revenue has expanded in times of rising geopolitical tensions and conflict in Europe, dragging European defence spending to historical highs. Soaring inflation in 2023 lowered European manufacturers' competitive advantage relative to the US and weighed on revenue growth. European weapon spending is poised to significantly shape weapon manufacturers' revenue growth in 2025, largely due to the ongoing geopolitical climate, particularly the Russia-Ukraine war and a renewed commitment to defence across the continent. Rising R&D investments lead to cutting-edge weapons with few or no competitors, directly boosting profitability. Over the five years through 2030, industry revenue is expected to soar at a compound annual rate of 4.9% to reach €32.5 billion. The Russia-Ukraine conflict has led to more government spending pledges, sustaining orders for defence contractors. Countries like Germany, Poland and the UK have made substantial commitments, with Germany committing over €72 billion in 2025 and Poland aiming for 4% of GDP on defence, fuelling revenue growth. NATO's new aspirational target of 5% of GDP by 2035 (with 3.5% for core defence requirements) indicates an upward trend in revenue growth over the long term.

The European Aerospace and Defense market, valued at €173.97 billion in 2025, is projected to experience robust growth, with a Compound Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) of 5.14% from 2025 to 2033. This expansion is driven by several key factors. Increased defense spending across European nations in response to geopolitical instability and a renewed focus on national security are significant contributors. Furthermore, the rising demand for advanced military aircraft, unmanned aerial systems (UAS), and space systems, coupled with ongoing technological advancements in areas such as avionics, materials science, and artificial intelligence, fuel market growth. The commercial aviation sector, while facing its own challenges, also contributes significantly, with modernization efforts at airports and the continuous demand for efficient and technologically advanced aircraft sustaining market demand. The market is segmented across various areas including commercial and general aviation, military aircraft and systems, unmanned aerial systems, and space systems and equipment, each presenting unique growth opportunities. Competition among established players like Airbus, BAE Systems, and Leonardo, alongside emerging innovative companies, is intense, driving innovation and efficiency improvements within the industry. Specific segments like the development and deployment of next-generation fighter jets, the expansion of satellite constellations for communications and Earth observation, and the increasing adoption of UAS for both civilian and military applications are key areas of focus for growth. The European market's structure presents both challenges and opportunities. Significant government regulation and procurement processes can impact market access and project timelines. However, collaboration between nations and industry players on large-scale projects fosters economic benefits and technological advancement.
