An Erratum for this article has been published in Journal of Applied Econometrics 18(2) 2003, 249 Previous empirical work on corporate growth rates using cross-section or short-panel econometric techniques suggests that growth rates are random but that some degree of mean reversion exists. This means that size differences between firms are transitory. Another, more natural way to explore the long-run distribution of firm sizes is to examine data on the growth of particular firms over long periods of time. Using a sample of 147 UK firms observed continually for more than 30 years, our conclusions are that growth rates are highly variable over time and that differences in growth rates between firms do not persist for very long. Further, firms show no tendency to converge to either a common size or to a pattern of stable size differences over time. These results are compared and contrasted with standard approaches that suggest that firms reach and maintain stable positions in a skewed size distribution.

These datasets present annual land and crop areas, livestock populations and agricultural workforce estimates broken down by farm type, size and region. More detailed geographical breakdowns and maps are updated every 3 to 4 years when a larger sample supports the increased level of detail. Longer term comparisons are available via links in the Historical timeseries section at the bottom of this page.
The results are sourced from the annual June Survey of Agriculture and Horticulture. The survey captures data at the farm holding level (historically based on individual farm locations) so most data is presented on this basis. Multiple farm holdings can be owned by a single farm business, so the number of farm holdings has also been aggregated to farm businesses level as a way of estimating the number of overall farming enterprises for England only.

These figures are not official statistics. They are internal workforce management information published in the interests of transparency.
These figures have not been reconciled centrally with any National Statistics. Where differences appear between the monthly information and National Statistics, clarifying comments will be provided. The ONS quarterly public sector employment statistics provide an official headline measure for comparing the overall size of employment in central government organisations with other sectors of the economy at the relevant quarterly reference point.
Given the wide range of organisations covered, caution should be exercised when drawing inferences from the figures and care should be taken when making comparisons between organisations.
